The Copenhagen documentary film festival CPH:DOX is back for its 21st edition, running from March 13-24.

This year’s festival promises to be an exciting event, with 66 films nominated across six award categories. Among these, 47 are world premieres, 17 are international premieres, and two are European premieres. All the films in the main competition will have world premieres.

Visitors to the festival can expect a diverse range of documentaries that tackle some of the most pressing issues of our time. According to Niklas Engstrøm, CPH:DOX’s artistic director, the films in this year’s competition explore themes such as identity politics, colonialism, and the struggles for democracy and against climate change. They offer fresh perspectives and challenge aesthetic boundaries, providing deeper insights into issues we thought we already understood.

In celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, CPH:DOX has partnered with the Institute for Human Rights to introduce the new Human: Rights Award.

This award highlights the importance of human rights in these challenging times and nominates 10 exceptional films that address pressing global issues. The festival also features several other awards, each with a cash prize. The DOX:AWARD, offering €10,000, features world premieres, while the NEW:VISION Award (€5,000) focuses on art films and boundary-pushing experiments.

The NEXT:WAVE Award (€5,000) spotlights emerging filmmakers, and the NORDIC:DOX Award (€5,000) celebrates exceptional films from the Nordic region. The F: ACT Award (€5,000) recognises documentaries that blur the lines between filmmaking and in-depth journalism. Finally, the Audience Award (€5,000) allows festivalgoers to vote for their favourite film.

With such a diverse and thought-provoking selection of documentaries, CPH:DOX promises to be an engaging and informative event for all who attend. Whether you’re a film enthusiast, a human rights advocate, or simply curious about the world around you, this festival has something to offer.
