Beyond the 鈥淐artels and Housekeepers鈥�: Jenna Speaks Up

Being a fanatic of movies and films, I have been exposed to this disturbing narrative on how Latinos are portrayed on television. There is this absurd notion that Latinos would only fit well in roles that involve drug cartels and house keepers. There should be a change from this stereotypical view of Latinos. Every movie with Latino characters typically falls victim to five major cliches, Maids, housekeepers, Latino lovers, Latina sex pots, gang members, and immigrants are the five main tropes that are employed in movies. Latinos were consistently portrayed poorly in the bulk of the movies.

A pretty good example is the, 1992 American Me film that depicts the life a gang in Los Angels. Esperanza and Pedro Santana, a young Latino couple, are ethnically persecuted by sailors in the story’s opening scene, which takes place during the Zoot Suit Riots of 1943. While Esperanza is being gang raped by the sailors, Pedro is dragged to the streets and attacked along with other people of Latin American descent. It is evident that this tale has long existed for the Latino people, and this is just but a mere tip of the ice burg, we have so many films that depict the same stereotypical view of the Latino people.

 So the true question is if one has not gone through the hardships, gone to jail or joined a drug gang then they are not part of the community? You guys just enjoy playing into stereotypes. Should we therefore continue to promote this rude and ridiculous idea or should we alter our perspectives? Jenna Ortega seems to hate this narrative, she has opened up about how proud she is of her heritage. She does not shy away form her root, Jenna embraced the Wednesday character quite well. Who, in retrospect, could have performed the part more effectively? She was the perfect fit.

John Leguizamo, an actor and comedian, has been vocal on the dearth of Latino representation in Hollywood, and Jenna Ortega appeared to be following suit. Her exact words were, 鈥淢ost Latino roles are stereotypical, the daughter of the cartel and the housekeeper. She out-rightly condemns the Latino stereotypes that have been applied by the entertainment industry to portray Latino characters. This, in my opinion, is a significant step for Latino actors and the community at large. This has long been anticipated, so I suppose it’s time to switch up the narrative.

The Wednesday film was definitely a step in the right direction. The role played by the Adams family broke away from the stereotypical image of Latinos, which is noteworthy in the film business. 鈥淲ednesday is typically a Latino character that has never been represented and so I have an opportunity to give other girls that look like some relatability.鈥� These were Jennas鈥� exact words on how the film was a great win for the Latino community.
