This April is bound to excite history buffs all over Portugal. The 25th of April, as it is known, marks the date of the most decisive political event in Portugal’s history.

On April 25, 1974, leftist army officers brought an end to a fascist regime, freeing Portugal from authoritarian leadership.

Although celebrated in various cities in the country, its capital, Lisbon, holds some of the grandest celebrations.

The day is also known as Carnation Revolution, to mark the coming of peace. Carnations are associated with it because a restaurant owner gave the soldiers who took to the streets some carnations to show the march was a peaceful one.  However, the most crucial events leading to this coup occurred on the 24th.

A Musical Coup de tat!

Typically, the Carnation Revolution was orchestrated starting with radio signals. The Portuguese revolutionaries did this by relying on music to send cryptic messages to accomplices.

First, the song “E Depois do Adeus” by Paulo de Carvalho was played at 10: 55 p.m of April 24, signalling to revolutionaries, and was followed by “Grandola, Vila Morena” by Jose Afonso, on Radio Renascenca at 00: 25 of the 25th. The songs advised revolutionaries to occupy strategic positions, and, by dawn, the fascist regime had been overthrown!

Concert to Honour the Date of a Revolution’s Birth

According to Turismo de Lisboa, a video mapping session will kick off the April Festivities at exactly 10 p.m. on the evening of 24th April.

Scenic shots by eminent photographer, Alfredo Cunha, will be projected into the façades of Terreiro do Paço, to the musical accompaniment of Rodrigo Leão. This will be succeeded by a massive concert, “Uma Ideia de Futuro”, performed by 180 artists on stage!

To sum it up, no one deserves to miss this patriotic night filled with revelry, contemporary art and culture, with the main theme of the night set to be “fix the past, celebrate the present and project the future”.
