In a move to maintain the growing crowds drawn by social media-driven food trends, Amsterdam officials have inserted a new clause in the operating permit of a popular snack bar, limiting the size of its queue.
According to the Parool newspaper, the Fabel Friet food outlet has been told it cannot have more than 10 people waiting for their French fries once they have ordered. If the queue exceeds this limit, the shop will have to close its second till until the waiting customers have been served.
The shop owners, however, have contested the new rule, arguing that it simply cannot be done. They have now taken the issue to court, setting the stage for a battle over the impact of social media on Amsterdam’s iconic culinary scene.
This development comes as the city faces the rise of the “TikTok queue” – a phenomenon where tourists flock to enjoy a stroopwafel, cake, or other local delicacy that has gained popularity on the video-sharing platform. The surge in demand has overwhelmed some of Amsterdam’s beloved food sellers, prompting officials to intervene.
“The city’s love for food is so strong that even the city officials have taken notice,” says Iamsterdam, the city’s official tourism organization. “But finding the right balance between preserving the authenticity of our culinary traditions and managing the influx of social media-driven crowds is a delicate challenge.”
For instance, the stroopwafel, a thin waffle cookie with a caramel-like filling, is a staple in Amsterdam, with street vendors and cafes across the city offering these sweet treats. The Dutch government has even recognized the stroopwafel’s importance in the country’s cultural heritage, naming it the official Dutch cookie in 2019.
Beyond the stroopwafels, Amsterdam’s culinary scene is characterized by its unique blend of traditional and modern flavours.
“The city’s food scene is not just about traditional Dutch dishes but also about the diverse cultural influences that have shaped the city’s culinary identity,”
says Amsterdam Tourist, the city’s tourism website.
One of the most notable influences on Amsterdam’s food scene is the city’s history of colonialism, particularly its ties to the Dutch East Indies, which included present-day Indonesia. The Indonesian influence is evident in the city’s love for rice dishes, such as the popular “rijsttafel,” a mix of small dishes from all over Indonesia.
As Amsterdam grapples with the “new” challenge posed by the TikTok-fueled food trends, the city’s officials and culinary community are working to strike a balance between preserving the authenticity of their beloved food culture and adapting to the changing demands of modern tourism. The outcome of the Fabel Friet case may set the tone for how the city navigates this delicate balance in the years to come.
