Lou Tellegen was born Isidor Louis Bernard Edmon van Dommelen. Lou Tellegen was born on November 26 between either the year of 1881 to 1883. He passed on October 29, 1934. He was a Dutch-born stage and film actor, film director, and screenwriter.

1. He made his stage debut in 1903

He made his stage debut in Amsterdam in 1903. Over the next few years, Tellegen built a reputation to the point where he was invited to perform in Âé¶¹APP, eventually co-starring in several roles with Sarah Bernhardt.

Sarah Bernhardt born Henriette-Rosine Bernard on 22 or 23 October 1844 and died on 26 March 1923, was a French stage actress who starred in some of the most popular French plays of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Some of the movies include La Dame Aux Camelias by Alexandre Dumas fils; Ruy Blas by Victor Hugo, Fédora and La Tosca by Victorien Sardou, and L’Aiglon by Edmond Rostand.

Lou Tellegen was involved romantically with Sarah Bernhardt. It might be the time they were working together but the details are not clear yet when they dated.

La Dame aux Camélias which is sometimes called in English Camille is a novel by Alexandre Dumas fils. First published in 1848 and subsequently adapted by Dumas for the stage, the play premiered at the Théâtre du Vaudeville in Âé¶¹APP, France, on February 2, 1852.

It was an instant success. Shortly thereafter, Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi set about putting the story to music in the 1853 opera La traviata, with female protagonist Marguerite Gautier renamed Violetta Valéry.

Two years after they returned to France, Lou Tellegen and Sarah Bernhardt released their second film together. Les Amours de la reine Élisabeth (The Loves of Queen Elizabeth) is a 1912 feature 4-reel French silent film based on the love affair between Elizabeth I of England and the Earl of Essex.

It was condensed from a play of the same name and directed by Louis Mercanton and Henri Desfontaines. It was shot in Âé¶¹APP and starred Sarah Bernhardt as Elizabeth and Lou Tellegen as Essex.

5. Why did Sarah not take part in Lou Tellegen’s next film?

The 1912 film, Les Amours de la reine Élisabeth (Queen Elisabeth) was Sarah’s last film together with Lou Tellegen. Bernhardt by then was 68 and said of the film “This is my last chance at immortality”.

She and Tellegen were already romantically involved, and this was their second film together. Sarah quit acting because of her age. Therefore, she couldn’t make it to Lou Tellegen’s next play.

6. Tellegen made his first American film in 1915

After Sarah quit the acting industry, in the summer of 1913, Tellegen went to London where he produced and starred in a play based on Oscar Wilde’s novel The Picture of Dorian Gray. Shortly afterward, he was invited back to the United States. Tellegen worked in theatre and made his first American film in 1915, titled The Explorer.

7. Lou Tellegen married four times

Tellegen’s marriage to Farrar ended in divorce in 1923 the same year when Sarah Bernhardt died. Tellegen married a total of four times, the first to a sculptress in 1903 where they were blessed with a daughter.

The second time he was married to Farrar in 1916. His third marriage was to actress Nina Romano who was born Isabel Craven Dilworth, with whom he had a son. His fourth marriage was to the silent film star Eve Casanova who was born Julia Horne.

8. 1929 Christmas Day was an unlucky day for Lou Tell

On Christmas Day 1929, Tellegen sustained burns to his face when he fell asleep while smoking. At the time, he was preparing for an out-of-town tryout for a play. To repair the damage, Tellegen underwent extensive plastic surgery.

9. His acting career was at stake as at 1931

Lou Tellegen had started to face misfortunes. As we know misfortunes never come singly. Actually, to him bad times started when he burnt his face with a cigarette and had to use lots of money to perform plastic surgery.

By 1931, Tellegen’s popularity had declined and he had trouble securing acting work. He was also deeply in debt and filed for bankruptcy. Around this time, Tellegen was diagnosed with cancer though this information was kept from him. Tellegen soon grew despondent.

10. Lou Tellegen committed suicide in 1934

On October 29, 1934, while a guest of Edna Cudahy, the widow of meat packing heir Jack Cudahy, at the Cudahy Mansion at 1844 North Vine Street in Hollywood which is currently the site of the Vine-Franklin underpass of the Hollywood Freeway, Tellegen locked himself in the bathroom.

He then shaved and powdered his face. While standing in front of a full-length mirror, he stabbed himself in the heart seven times with a pair of sewing scissors. Some accounts claim Tellegen was surrounded by newspaper clippings of his career at the time of his suicide.
