Melchior Treub was born on 26 December 1851 and died on 3 October 1910. Treub was a Dutch botanist. He worked at the Bogor Botanical Gardens in Buitenzorg on the island of Java, south of Batavia, Dutch East Indies.

1. He founded the Bogor Agricultural Institute

IPB University commonly known as the  ’Bogor Agricultural Institute, is a state-run agricultural university based in the regency of Bogor, Indonesia. The institute began as an agricultural school formed by the Dutch colonial regime in the early 20th century.
After independence, it was part of the University of Indonesia before becoming an independent institute on September 1, 1963. Prof. Dr. Arif Satria, S.P., M.Si. serves as its director.
In 1903 he established the Buitenzorg Landbouw Hogeschool, a school that later evolved into the Bogor Agricultural Institute. Melchior Treub was one of the founder members under Rudolph Scheffer.
2. He graduated from the University of Leiden
In 1873 Melchior Treub graduated in biology from the University of Leiden. Leiden University is a public research university in Leiden, Netherlands. The university was founded as a Protestant university in 1575 by William, Prince of Orange.
The university was a reward to the city of Leiden for its defense against Spanish attacks during the Eighty Years’ War. It is the oldest institution of higher education that emphasizes in social sciences in the Netherlands, as well as one of the most reputed in the country and Europe.
After graduating from the University of Leiden, Treub subsequently, remained in Leiden as a botanical assistant. From 1880 to 1909 he was a botanist based in the Dutch East Indies.

7. Melchior Treub published treatises during his travel around various places of the world
As a botanical collector, he traveled throughout the Indies, and to the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Singapore, and Penang. He was interested in plant morphology and physiology and published treatises on morphology.
The published treatises on morphology were of Balanophoraceae, Loranthaceae, and Lycopodiaceae. He is credited for coining the term “protocorm” to describe the early stages in the germination of lycopods.
8. His worsening health causes him to return to his mother country
He worked for nearly 30 years at the gardens before returning to the Netherlands in 1909 due to his worsening health. Dr. Treub then settled in the village of Saint-Raphael on the French Riviera, where he died in 1910.
9. The liverwort genus Treubia was named in his honor
The Marchantiophyta is a division of non-vascular land plants commonly referred to as hepatics or liverworts. Like mosses and hornworts, they have a gametophyte-dominant life cycle, in which cells of the plant carry only a single set of genetic information. It is estimated that there are about 9000 species of liverworts.
Treubia is a genus of liverworts in the family Treubiaceae. There are seven species, all of which are restricted to the southern hemisphere. Five of the species occur in Australasia and the other (Treubia scapanioides) occur in Chile.
All species are dioicous, with separate male and female gametophytes. Karl Ritter von Goebel is the one who came up with the genus name to honor Melchior Treub.

Treub Maatschappij is another reference to the “Society for the Promotion of the Physical Exploration of the Dutch Colonies”. The Society for the Promotion of the Physical Exploration of the Dutch Colonies was founded on 14 May 1890 in Amsterdam, with the mission of increasing the knowledge of the botany of the Dutch colonies.
This knowledge had applications both in pure science, as well as the fields of agriculture and industry. To that end, from the late 19th century to the eve of World War II, the Society equipped expeditions to explore Dutch overseas territories.
