10 Great Facts About Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay


 

Also known as Sarat Chandra Chatterjee was born on September 15, 1876. He was a Bengali novelist and short story writer known for his works such as Parinetta, Devdas, and Srikanta. He became famous for his realistic portrayals of the problems and challenges that were faced by Indian society during the colonial era.

Even though he never received any formal education, he is still praised for his observations on human behavior and social dynamics that shaped and influenced his writing style. While he lived in Calcutta, he translated Hindi paper books into English for an advocate for six months until he moved to Burma. Later in 1903, Sarat was able to find another job in Burma Public Works Accounts Office in Rangoon. While he stayed in Burma, he spent his time reading and painting. After taking a break for eighteen years he resumed writing. 

2. He had a Significant Impact on Society

Even after his death, Sarat is still one of the most prominent writers across India. His works have been greatly reprinted and he has been labeled as one of the most translated authors. He is a literary personality among Marathi writers such as N.S. Phadke, H.N. Apte, V.S. Khandekar, and G.T. Madkholkar.

His novel Devdas has been made in 16 different versions from Bengali, Hindi to Telugu. His other book Parineeta was made thrice in Hindi. Bardidi was adapted in 1957 and was made by director Ajoy Kar. His book Bindur Chhele is another famous film that was produced under the name Chhoti Bahu. The film Thodi Kodallu is based on his novel Apne Paraye. Aalo O Chhaya is another film that is based on Sarat’s novel. It starred Uttam Kumar and Suchitra Sen.

Aside from his works being adapted into films, Sarat has been able to become famous by his own hand. His novels, stories, and novellas have become worldwide sensations. By spending his time in Bengal, he was able to gather the unique and elegant style of his literary works.

His first novel Badadidi earned him fame. The success of his first book led him to write many more stories and novels including Parinita, Devdas, Choritrohin, Shrikanta, Datta, Pother Dabi, and Grihadaha.

Aside from books, Sarat also wrote Plays such as Bijoya, Rama, Shoroshi, and Jai Hind. Some of his famous stories include Abhagir Swargo, Anupamar Prem, Andhare Aalo, Bilashi, Bindur, Chhele, Bojha, and Chobi.

5. His Unique Home in Howrah

Sarat stayed in Howrah for 11 years. He later moved to his house in the village of Samta. His house is known as the Sarat Chandra Kuthi, it is a two-storied Burmese-style house. It was also the home of his brother Swami Vedananda. The house is surrounded by trees like bamboo and guava that were planted by the author himself.

6. His Essays Became Popular Very Fast

Sarat wrote many essays during the entirety of his career. Some of his most popular works include Samakalin Bharat, Bangalir Itihas, Shiksha, and Mohapporush. These essays became popular because they showcase Sarat’s deep understanding of the social problems and his concern for the welfare of the masses.
