1. He Had an Intriguing Childhood

Ruskin was born on May 19, 1934, in Kasauli which is a small hill station in Himachal Pradesh, India. When he was eight years old, he was sent to a boarding school in Shimla. He was introduced, at the school, to literature and developed a love for ending and writing. While Ruskin was still at the boarding school, he wrote his first book The Room on the Roof at the age of 17.

After he completed school, Ruskin went to England to pursue further studies but ended up deciding that his passion was writing. In 1955, he returned to India and began working as a freelance writer. His works were published in magazines and newspapers like The Hindu.

After writing the novel The Room on the Roof when he was 17 years old. It wasn’t until 1956, that it was published and won him the John Llewellyn Rhys Memorial Prize the following year. The book is based on the coming-of-age story of a young boy named Rusty who is orphaned and goes to live with his English guardian in India. It explores the themes of belonging, cultural differences, and identity. It also talks about the challenges faced by young people. The Room on the Roof is considered a classic of Indian literature and was adapted into a critically acclaimed film.

From 2006 to 2018, Ruskin received the Lifetime Achievement Award, Atta Galatta Bangalore Literature Festival Lifetime Achievement Award, and another Lifetime Achievement Award from the Indian Council of Cultural Relations.

From 1996 to 2003, Ruskin received honorary doctorates from Agra University, University of Dehra Dun, and Missouri University.
