For a state as developed as Georgia, we sure do have the most crazy of laws. Hearing a law such as it is illegal to keep a donkey in a bathtub can be outright outrageous and rightly so. This is because the law is outdated and does not make any sense today.

However, these laws served a purpose back then on its enactment. The law was meant to cure a mischief and regulate the conduct of individuals. Such laws are not only hard to understand but they can also quite funny and bizarre. Be ready to have your ribs cracked and your being shocked. Here are the 20 crazy laws that exist in Georgia.

1. It is illegal to carry ice cream in the back pocket

The most common means of transportation back in the days was the horse. However, horse thieves discovered this trick. Placing ice cream in their back pockets lured the horse to follow them thereby leading the horse away.

2. Erotic dancing on Sunday is illegal

This one hails from Roswell GA. The municipal authority prohibits erotic dance establishments from working on Sundays. The stipulated working hours are 7 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. Monday through Friday, and Saturday from 5 p.m. until 12 midnight.

3. Wearing hoods in public is tantamount to an offence

For public safety reasons, it’s illegal to wear a hood in public in Dublin, Georgia. This also applies to any apparel that conceals ones identity. However, this law doesn’t apply to children under 16 years who are out celebrating Halloween on October 31.

4. You cannot cuss over the phone in Columbus

This law was enacted to avoid the use of vulgar language over the phone. Back in the days, piety and reverence was highly encouraged.

5. It is illegal to keep a donkey in a bathtub

In 1924, an Arizona farmer allowed his donkey to sleep in an old bathtub. A dam burst and the town flooded. The donkey that was still in the bathtub floated downstream. While the donkey was rescued, the ordeal took many hours and a lot of manpower. After that, several states passed laws against the keeping of donkeys in bathtubs.

6. In Acworth, all citizens must own a rake

This is because it’s your civic duty to rake your own yard. In fact, it’s illegal for residents to not own a rake. This important law was created in the hopes of preventing accidents as a result of too many fallen leaves starting to gather up on walkways or roadways. If you get into an accident due to fallen leaves in Acworth, then you can use this law to help pursue a claim.

7. No eating chicken with a fork

Gainesville is recognized as the “poultry capital of the world.” It’s no wonder that local lawmakers have passed important eating etiquette laws to apply to their prized poultry products. In 1961, the city of Gainesville passed a law making it illegal to eat fried chicken with a fork. This crazy law is however not really enforced.

8. It’s illegal to sell two beers at the price of one

If you live outside of Georgia, then you’ve surely heard about “happy hours” where bars or other establishments start selling their alcoholic beverages at a discount price. If you do live in Georgia, though, then happy hours just don’t have the same meaning. That’s because there’s a law in Georgia that prevents businesses from setting one price for two beers. For example, a bar would be prohibited from offering a “two-for-one” deal for alcohol.

9. It is illegal to deface trees with initials

Let’s face it, many people just love leaving their initials or lover’s initials on the backs of trees. It symbolizes a sense of finality. In Columbus, however, creating this type of artwork is illegal regardless of whether you’re on private or public property. This law was passed in a bid to protect trees and nature generally.

10. Engaging with llamas is considered dangerous

In Georgia, any llama-related activity is also considered inherently dangerous, so you’ll have to engage in any of these activities at your own risk. If you suffer any llama-related personal injuries, then you’ll assume the legal and financial responsibility for it. Per Georgia Department of Agriculture laws, llama owners are protected from liability, even in the event of death, with very few exceptions.

11. Spitting from a vehicle except trucks is illegal

This random law makes it a crime for anyone to spit from the window of a car or bus. It is legal, however, to spit from a truck. A passenger that spits out the window could wind up having that spit ball land on the car behind them. In these types of situations, the alleged spitting driver would likely be held at-fault for any crash that happened as a result.

12. It’s illegal for chicken to cross the road

If your chickens are crossing lanes of traffic, then they could cause an accident. If an accident does cause injuries or losses, then the owner of those chickens could face a potential lawsuit. Plus, the law protects chickens’ lives, too.

13. It’s illegal to bury a person under a sidewalk in a cemetery

The city of Columbus prohibits people from burying a corpse in any of the streets, lanes, nor walkways in any city cemetery. This law holds  unless you file an internment request with the municipal authority.

14. It’s illegal to say “Oh Boy!” in Jonesboro

After the South was decimated after the civil war, a lot of freed slaves relocated to Jonesboro GA to work for a living. Due to the dire economic situation at the time, they ended up working for scraps as horse cleaners for the wealthy town folk.

These frail men, some of whom hadn’t eaten in days, would fight over who got to clean the horses and as a result many were killed. The city of Jonesboro passed a law saying that these wealthy people could no longer come to town and call for these former slaves. The term they used to call them was “Oh Boy!”.

15. Drinking in a bus is illegal

It’s illegal for any person to use alcoholic beverages on any public transport vehicle used by any public transportation system operated by Athens-Clarke County.

16. It’s illegal to make disturbing noises in a fair

In the city of Athens, it is illegal for any person to create any disturbance at any public meeting or any place of amusement by talking loudly, using indecent or profane language, or any disturbing sound or action.

17. You have the right to commit battery when provoked by ‘fighting’ words

According the Georgia Law: “A person charged with the offense of simple assault or simple battery may introduce in evidence any opprobrious or abusive language used by the person against whom force was threatened or used; and the trier of facts may, in its discretion, find that the words used were justification for simple assault or simple battery.”

18. Members of the State Assembly may not be ticketed for speeding while the State Assembly is in session

This is the thing with people in power who have at their hands the ability to make laws and influence policies. While the reasoning might have good intentions, let the members get to the assembly in time, this might be subject to misuse of power.

19. You can’t place a dead bird on your neighbors lawn

Technically, this law applies to all dead animals. Therefore, it was expected that if your pet or other animal died you would take the necessary steps to call the local vet for disposing the carcass.

20. It is illegal to set up a picnic in a graveyard

According to my wildest imagination, a group of people found the graveyard a comfortable and most appealing picnic site. This became a nuisance since some individuals could not fathom that the resting place of their loved ones was subjected to such treatment.
