Home to sweet peaches and the southern comfort, natural settings to the big city lights, Georgia is a state that is rich in culture and deep history. This is a guide to help you navigate Georgia’s diverse and attractive spots.

From big cities to iconic small towns, picturesque mountains to sandy beaches, Georgia has a lot more to offer making it ideal for vacations and explorations. Here is a list of the 10 most beautiful places to visit in Georgia.

1.  Atlanta

 Atlanta is the largest city in the state and the capital of Georgia. The city is a hub for business, companies like Coca-Cola, Delta, and CNN have their headquarters here.

Family-friendly destinations that are a must-see include Georgia Aquarium (the world’s biggest indoor aquarium) and Legoland Discovery Center Atlanta. The city hosts impressive museums of history, AA art, historic monuments, and landmarks from the Civil Rights era. To escape the urban crawl, there are several nature trails and parks you can visit.

2. savannah

Savannah defines what the state of Georgia is all about with the leisurely pace of the locals, close eateries, and party-hard reputation of River Street. Furthermore, the cobblestoned and oak-lined streets, and delightful soul food make it a go-to destination.

With a history of almost 300 years, it’s the oldest city in the state. Get intrigued with the Telfair’s Academy of Arts and Sciences, a public museum, a walk down the historic 22 parklike squares. It is also home to the famous Bonaventure Cemetery. Also, check out the beautiful public Forsyth Park, the Mercer Williams House Museum, and the Wormsloe Historic site.

3. Providence Canyon State Park, Lumpkin

Often nicknamed “little Grand Canyon”, Providence Canyon bears apparent similarities to the Grand Canyon. Exposing smooth curves, pointed spires, cliffs, and a beautiful glister of sediments.

These canyons were formed through the slow subtlety of natural erosion. These unusual geological formations make the landscape a perfect spot for photography and exploration.

4. Cumberland Island

Cumberland Island is the largest and situated furthest to the south of Georgia’s barrier islands offering a beautiful landscape and a rich history. To get here, catch a ferry from St. Mary’s which is close by.

The Island features multiple historic sites, for instance, the African Baptist Church, the Plum Orchard Mansion, and the Dungeness Ruins, which tells the story of the Carnegie family, Native Americans, and enslaved African Americans.

Visitors can set their camp on the seashore and hire bikes at the Sea Camp Dock. To aid explorers with their trip an exhibition and guest hub located is close to the ship dock offering guidance and clarifying the Islands rich history.

5. Tallulah Gorge State Park

Venture to Tallulah Gorge State Park located west of the Georgia-South Carolina border in the northern part of the state. It hosts the Tallulah Gorge which is two miles long and nearly 1,000 feet deep with the Tallulah River flowing through with five easily distinguishable waterfalls.

The best way to experience Tallulah falls is during scheduled shutdowns by the dam operators to release the full power of the fall, it’s quite a spectacle. The park also features 20 plus miles of hiking and bike trails and a suspension bridge that offers a beautiful view of the park’s waterfalls.

6. Golden Isles of Georgia

The Golden Isles get their name from the golden sand beaches dotting the Georgia coastline. The port town and the barrier islands are located along the Atlantic coast. Just follow the coastline south until you get to the main island. The satellite islands close by can easily be accessed by a boat.  

The larger islands feature all amenities you could want. The beach is the main attraction here and everything is neat and tranquil. Whichever island you choose, there’s a promise for stunning sunsets over the ocean’s horizon.

7. Amicalola Falls State Park

Located in the North Georgia Mountains northeast of Dawsonville, Amicalola Falls State Park is the most visited park in Georgia. Measuring 729 feet tall it’s the tallest waterfall in the Southeast and gets its name from the Cherokee language for “tumbling waters”.

Here traveler favorites include multiple hiking trails like the base of the falls trail, survival activities, zip-lining, and archery. The park also offers enchanting sunsets and charming views.

8. Callaway Gardens, Pine Mountain

The Callaway Gardens became established in 1952. It’s situated just at the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in the town of Pine Mountain. It has all the modern amenities expected from a vacation resort.

Callaway Gardens features 2,500 acres of gardens, a butterfly center with a thousand plus butterflies, more than 10 miles of bike and nature trails, and a dense display of plants and animals. Additionally, there are plenty of recreational activities to engage in including, swimming in Robin Lake Beach, kayaking, paddleboard or just soaking up some sun during the warm months.   

9. Athens, GA

Locates in northeast Georgia, Athens is an appealing city known for being a great destination for unique annual festivals and events, live music, restaurants, and great shopping malls. The city was the spark of Georgia’s Antebellum Trail of historic Civil War towns. It’s also known for its antebellum architecture.

It is a worth visiting destination as it is home to the State Botanical of Georgia, the Georgia Museum of Natural History, and the Georgia Museum of Art all located at The University of Georgia. The good highlights of the city include the Taylor Grandy House a Greek revival mansion, Church-Waddel-Brumby House, and The T.R.R. Cobb House (a well preserved mid-19th-century mansion of a lawyer with historic period exhibits and furniture).

10. Lake Lanier

Lake Lanier is located at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. People visit the Blue Ridge Mountains lake every year to benefit from its various outdoor activities.

With close to 700 miles of shoreline and about 76 recreational areas, there are plenty of activities to engage in including, fishing, swimming, kayaking, water skiing, boating, or just relaxing on its marvelous shores. Visitors can also enjoy a wave pool and waterslides at Margaritaville at Lanier Island and explore the lake’s Islands and parks by several hiking trails.
