As at 2022, Bath Rugby Team had won 18 major trophies with the best times having been between 1984 and 1998 when it won 10 Domestic Cups, 6 League titles and were the first English side to win the European Cup in 1998. 1. Bath Rugby Is One Of The Oldest Rugby Clubs In The World

The team has been around for some time and is considered as one of the oldest clubs. Its history dates back to 1865 when it was founded by members of Lansdowne Cricket Club in Bath (founded 1825) for ‘something to do in the winter’ and named it Bath Football Club. Bath is also one of only three clubs never to have been relegated from the top division of English rugby.

2. The Club Plays Its Home Games At The Recreation Ground

During their formation they took North Parade as their home base but could not sustain, thereby moving from ground to ground to play their matches. Some of the grounds included Claverton Down, Lambridge Meadows, Taylor’s Field and Henrietta Park. As they progressed, they managed to lease a plot of land at Pulteney Meadow, where today’s Rec stands. With most games played against local opposition: Weston-super-Mare, Gloucester, Clifton and the “Arabs” from Bristol.

Currently, they boasts one of the best stadiums in the Gallagher Premiership, immersed in a World Heritage City with a stunning backdrop of Bath. They play their home matches at the Recreation Ground which has a capacity of 14,500 and its close proximity to the city makes it an ideal venue for a weekend outing.

3. They Have Won The English Premiership Title Six Times

The joint-second most successful Club in Premiership Rugby history, Bath have won the competition on six occasions. Bath’s golden generation saw them win all their Premiership titles between 1989 and 1996. They have won 18 major trophies and with most of the success being recorded between 1984 and 1998 when it won 10 Domestic Cups, 6 League titles and were the first English side to win the European Cup in 1998.

4. The Club Has Also Won The European Rugby Champions Cup

In 1998, Bath Rugby created history in becoming the first British team to win the European Cup. It was a victory that was witnessed by seven thousand loyal Bath supporters who made the trip to Bordeaux as the Blue, Black and White prepared to go into battle with defending European champions Brive in the Heineken Cup Final.

5. Bath Rugby and Gloucester Rugby Have A Fierce Rivalry

These two teams share the history of being among the oldest rugby teams and their rivalry dates back to over 100 years. They are also known to have been successful and have shared the wins on the domestic front. They are close neighbors with their matches attracting very large crowds. The matches often dubbed ‘West County Derby’. At the end of the game they are only rivals on the pitch but friends outside.

6. They Have Produced Many Famous Players

This team has also produced a number of players who have gone to play at international level over the years. International stars such as Jeremy Guscott, Jason Robinson, Phil de Glanville, Mike Catt and Mike Tindall all owe their success to the legendary Blue, Black and White in the 90’s, and in 1998. Notably, ex-Scotland captain, Andy Nicol, became the first British player to lift the Heineken Cup, as Bath triumphed over Europe.

7. The Current Director of Rugby at Bath Is Stuart Hooper

Stuart Hooper (born 18 November 1981) is the current director of rugby and former rugby union player, at Bath Rugby having joined them at the end after the 2007-08 season. The retired player last played for Bath Rugby in the Aviva Premiership in April 2016 and has also been captain for the 2011–12 season. He then joined the technical bench as Performance and Player Development Director, before rising to the current position of director of rugby.

8. Bath Rugby Has A Strong Youth System

The University of Bath Rugby programme caters for all abilities, from the national BUCS Super Rugby league to recreational rugby. Over the years, they have provided student rugby players with an environment and culture where they can progress towards their sporting and educational goals, establish lasting friendships and enjoy the experience.

More than 300 men and women are known to have taken in the program which encompasses 15s (performance, development, Freshers and socials), 7s, Touch and Rugby League.

9. The Club’s Mascot Is A Blue, Furry Creature Named ‘Bluey’

As mentioned, the club was founded by members of Lansdowne Cricket Club in Bath. They started off as a football team and were wearing blue and white uniforms. When they started playing rugby they adopted the same colors and were nicknamed ‘Bluey because of the uniform which was inscribed in the club’s mascot.
