Dog Friendly Spots in Barcelona

Wondering whether to bring your pooch along on your Spanish travels? Spain is generally quite open to the idea of pets accompanying their owners around the various cities.

Most of the country’s major landmarks are dog-friendly, and there will generally always be at least one restaurant within walking distance of you that permits entry to furry friends.

When in Barcelona, head to any of the following spots where both you and your pup are welcome.

Madame Jasmine in Barcelona

Why not start with the weirdest and most wonderful first? Madame Jasmine is a dive bar in el Raval; Barcelona’s famous neighborhood of nightlife, Catalonian cuisine and guided walking tours.

It’s the perfect balance between tacky and bizarre, and to top things off dogs are permitted into the bar during all opening hours. If there ever was a space of pet inclusion in Barcelona, this is it.

Nowhere else in Barcelona will you be able to hang out with your dog indoors at 2am, other than Madame Jasmine or your Airbnb. There are also no other places in Barcelona where you’ll find such a range of demographics within a single space.

Aside from the dogs running around, the bar itself holds a pleasant ambiance and great music (usually eighties, to my delight). Their opening hours vary depending on the season; check in on their social media to see when you can head through.

Water will be provided for your pooches, and they have a simple sandwich menu alongside a few bar snacks.

The Beach in Barcelona

You would think that a synthetic beach would be a bit more accommodating to the creatures who roamed the land long before it even existed. But the beaches in Barcelona have some strict restrictions when it comes to pet permit times.

All you need to know is that dog beach allowance depends entirely on the season. In the winter months, dogs are permitted at any time of day. In the summer, they are not.

In the summer you can take your dog to the Barceloneta beaches either in the early hours of the morning, or anytime after sunset and late into the evening. During the day, the beaches are reserved for swimmers and sunbathers, so dogs are not permitted to run around at this time.

There are a few beaches just outside of Barcelona that are ideal for daytrips, and that permit doggy access year round, without daily restrictions. They are Sant Pol de Mar, Sant Pere Pescador, Port Ginesta (in the north) and Los Filipinos (in the south).

Espai Joliu in Barcelona

It’s all good and well that we have a dog-friendly bar in Barcelona, but what the people really want are dog-friendly cafes and coffee shops.

Nothing the demand, Espai Joliu recently made their space entirely pet friendly. It’s a quaint little coffee shop in Poblenou, an up and coming part of the norther region of Barcelona’s city center.

The gentrification of this area happened virtually overnight, and as a result the prices for coffee and brunch meals are slightly higher. The coffee shop does, however, cater to vegans and gluten free eaters which is another perk alongside the “all dogs allowed” policy.

The space is also used for the sale of house plants and cacti. Try their acai bowls and avocado toast.

Poblenou is an area best explored by foot. The four main beaches of Barcelona are directly on the east coast and there are free guided walking tours to take you through the inland neighborhoods.

Park Güell in Barcelona

The Park Güell is one of the most important architectural contributions that Gaudi gave to the city of Barcelona. Some argue the Sagrada Familia to be more significant, but considering that neither the church nor the park were technically ever completed, both have their own appeal depending on your architectural preferences.

The Park Güell is a complex park system in the heart of Barcelona. You might know it from those travel images of Barcelona that look like gingerbread houses have been constructed in the middle of the city? That’s Park Güell.

The park is composed by a variety of attractions including view points, picnic areas, municipal facilities, colorful tile art and hidden coves.

The €7 entrance fee was only implemented in recent years. Dogs are permitted in all areas of the park at any time, and they do not have to pay to enter. The green spaces are ideal for playing fetch and lazing about.

Public Transport in Barcelona

Dogs are allowed on the metro in Barcelona! They can ride at any time of service aside from peak periods. So unless you want to encounter complaints, avoid riding during the morning work rush and evening home rush. Weekends are fine at all hours.

The local and international train systems in Barcelona also permit dogs to ride on condition that they weigh under 9kg, and are in a carrier. There are obviously exceptions for service dogs or those accompanying anyone with special needs.

Barcelona – by Rúben dos Santos –

As far as taxis in Barcelona go, when it comes to dogs riding with passengers it is left to the prerogative of the driver. Most are happy to have furry friends in the backseat, but some will politely decline. Just ask your driver as they pull over whether or not your dog is allowed into their car or if you should wait for another.
