Hargreaves was born in Oswaldtwistle, a town near Blackburn, before 1720. With a population of roughly 5,000 people, Blackburn was well-known for creating “Blackburn greys,” textiles with a cotton weft and linen warp imported from India. The fact that cotton did well in his town, must have instilled his urge to come up with a more technological means to reduce the work input of cotton workers, hence the spinning jenny. The cotton from Blackburn was usually sent to London to be printed.
Hargreaves spent a significant amount of time thinking about how to improve the method because the textile industry’s need for cotton yarn was not being met at the time. The flying shuttle increased the demand for yarn by weavers by doubling their productivity, and the spinning jenny could now supply that need by increasing spinner output even further. The spinning jenny is supposed to have come to Hargreaves after a one-thread spinning wheel was overturned on the floor and both the wheel and the spindle continued to revolve. He recognized that by arranging numerous spindles upright and side by side, he could spin multiple threads at the same time. The spinning jenny was limited to creating cotton weft threads and was unable to make warp-quality yarn. Arkwright’s rotating frame later provided a high-quality warp.
Hargreaves built his own Jenny and sold several more to his neighbours. Before the price of yarn fell, other hand spinners first embraced his concept.
