This novelist was born on 6 March 1927 in Colombia. He was awarded the 1972 Neustadt International Prize for Literature. Further, in 1982 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.

Gabriel’s notable works include One Hundred Years of Solitude (1967), Chronicle of a Death Foretold (1981), and Love in the Time of Cholera (1985). He died on 17 April 2014 at age 87.

2. Pablo Neruda

Neruda was a Chilean poet, diplomat cum politician. He was born on 12 July 1904. He won the 1971 Nobel Prize in Literature. His most acclaimed work is his poem collection, Twenty Love Poems and a Song of Despair published in 1924. He died in Chile on 23 September 1973, aged 69.

This Mexican poet also served as a diplomat. He was born on March 31, 1914, in Mexico. His accolades include the 1977 Jerusalem Prize, and the Miguel de Cervantes Prize awarded to him in 1981.

Additionally, he received the Neustadt International Prize for Literature in 1982 as well as the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1990. His prominent works include El Laberinto de la Soledad (The Labyrinth of Solitude) published in 1945 and Piedra de sol (Sunstone) in 1957. Paz died on April 19, 1998, at the age of 84.

4. Mario Vargas Llosa

The Peruvian novelist was born on 28 March 1936. He won the 2010 Nobel Prize in Literature and has also received many other notable awards.

His rise to fame came in the 1960s. Some of his most acclaimed works are 1963’s The Time of the Hero and The Green House novel published in 1966. Others are Conversation in the Cathedral published in 1969 and Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter in 1977.

5. Jorge Luis Borges

Borges is remembered for his short stories and poems. He was born on 24 August 1899 in Argentina. His renowned works are A Universal History of Infamy (1935), Ficciones (1944), El Aleph (1949), Labyrinths (1962), and The Book of Sand (1975).

Moreover, Borges received awards such as Commandeur de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 1962. He died on 14 June 1986 aged 86 in Switzerland.

The Chilean author was born on 2 August 1942 in Peru. She is a household name in the magical realism genre. Her celebrated works include La casa de los espíritus (The House of the Spirits) published in 1982. City of the Beasts (La Ciudad de las bestias) in 2002 is another praised work by the author.

She has received awards like Chile’s National Literature Prize in 2010. To boot, she was honored with the 2014 Presidential Medal of Freedom by former U.S. president Barack Obama.

He was born on 5 June 1898 in Spain. The Spanish poet and playwright also doubled as a theatre director. His rise to the spotlight was the 1928 poetry collection Romancero Gitano (Gypsy Ballads).

Lorca wrote successful plays such as Blood Wedding in 1932 and Yerma published in 1934. The House of Bernarda Alba in 1936 was another triumphant play by the writer. He died on 19 August 1936 at age 38 in Spain.

8. Julio Cortazar

He was born on 26 August 1914 in Belgium. He was prominent in novels and short stories. His famous works are the Hopscotch novel published in 1963 and the Blow-up and Other Stories short story collection.

Cortazar’s awards include the Prix Médicis issued in France in 1974. He was also the recipient of the Rubén Darío Order of Cultural Independence in 1983. He died on 12 February 1984 at the age of 69 in France.

9. Miguel de Cervantes

The Spanish author was born on 29 September 1547. His two-part novel Don Quixote was his rise to prominence. The first part was published in 1605 and the second in 1615. He is also acclaimed for his Novelas ejemplares, which is a series of 12 novellas. He died on 22 April 1616 at the age of 68 in Spain.

He was born on January 28, 1853, in Cuba. The Versos Sencillos (Simple Verses) poetry collection is one of his well-known creations. He published the work in 1891.

Afterward, portions of the book were adapted into a tune called “Guantanamera”. The song has become a representative song of Cuba for generations.  Marti died on May 19, 1895, in Cuba aged 42 years.
