Top 10 Facts about Orcas

Orcas, also known as killer whales are awe-inspiring. In the dolphin family, they are the largest members. They are also the most intelligent and adaptable marine mammals. This toothed whale is known for its distinctive black and white markings. They are apex predators that live in pods and roam the seas in groups. Their distinctive hunting strategy makes them one of the ocean’s most successful predators. Fish, squid, seals, sea lions, and even other whales are hunted by Orcas. Oceanariums and marine parks stock them due to their acrobatic displays. Orcas have captivated people’s imagination for centuries because of their impressive hunting techniques and intricate social structures. Take a journey with us to discover the top ten fascinating facts about these magnificent oceanic creatures.

1.  Whales???……what Whales!

Top 10 Facts about Orcas

Often called “killer whales” Orcas are not whales. They belong to the family Delphinidae, which includes dolphins and porpoises. The striking black-and-white appearance is the distinguishing mark of Orcas.  They are apex predators that consume a wide variety of fish, squid, and other marine mammals as their primary prey.  The whale family actually consists of two suborders: baleen whales, which use baleen plates in their mouths to filter their food, and toothed whales, which have teeth and hunt for food. Orcas, other dolphins and porpoises are categorized as toothed whales. Orcas reach 30 feet in length and weigh up to 12,000 pounds, which is one reason why they are often referred to as whales. With their stocky build and distinctive black-and-white colouration, they also look more like some whale species than other dolphin species.

2. Orcas Pods are Highly Organized Communities

Orcas live in highly organized communities known as pods. The average population of a pod is 40 individuals although some larger pods have been observed. Each pod has its own unique social structure, with individuals forming close bonds and exhibiting complex behaviours such as cooperative hunting, communication through vocalizations, and even grieving for lost members. The most dominant individuals take on leadership roles in the pod and others follow their lead. Factors such as age, sex and individual abilities mean that the roles can shift over time. Orca pods social structures are highly complex and sophisticated. Researchers continue to study these intelligent and fascinating animals to better understand their behaviour and communication.

3. They are Everywhere!

Orcas are widely distributed marine mammals in the world. Be it in the Arctic or the Antarctic and they are found in all of the world’s oceans. From the icy waters of the North Pole to the warm, tropical waters of the equator they are at home in different environments.  Orcas are found in all of the world’s oceans is their ability to migrate long distances. In searching for food and mating opportunities they travel over 10,000 miles each year. However, some orcas just remain in the same general area year-round.

They also face several threats in the wild. Pollution, climate change, overfishing and habitat loss are threats. In some parts of the world, they are also hunted for their meat and other body parts. The presence of orcas in all of the world’s oceans is a testament to their adaptability and resilience as a species. Orcas rely on continued conservation efforts and protections to thrive for generations to come.

4. Orcas Have a Unique Hunting Strategy

Top 10 Facts about Orcas

Orcas work together as a team to hunt their prey.  Fish, squid, seals, sea lions and even other whales are fair game for them. The “Wave-washing” strategy is used for hunting seals and sea lions. Prey is targetted as it rests on ice floats, and then a group of orcas creates a large wave by swimming in a coordinated pattern. The wave knocks the prey into the water, where the orcas can then easily capture them.

Another interesting hunting technique used by orcas is “carousel feeding”.  They create a vortex that traps the fish in the centre when a group of orcas surround a school of fish and swim in a tight circle. The orcas then take turns swimming through the vortex to catch the fish. The intelligence and cooperation displayed by orcas in their hunting strategies are truly remarkable. These unique techniques make them one of the most successful predators in the ocean.

5.  They Cannot Smell but can Detect

All toothed whales lack olfactory lobes in their brains and olfactory nerves, proving they are odourless. Orcas’ sense of smell is less developed than their sight and hearing senses.  They can detect odours because they possess olfactory receptor genes according to research. Their olfactory bulb, the part of the brain that processes smells, is relatively small compared to other marine mammals. Hence they may rely more on other senses like echolocation and vision.  Orcas have been observed using their sense of smell in social interactions, such as detecting pheromones and recognizing other members of their pod.

6. Killer Whales are Smart

Killer whales are among the most intelligent animals in the world. They have large brains relative to their body size.  They exhibit complex social behaviours, communication skills, problem-solving abilities, and cultural traditions. Orca hunt is sophisticated and strategic, which often involves coordinated efforts and vocalizations to communicate and coordinate their actions. They adapt their behaviour to changing environmental conditions and learn new skills from other individuals in their group. Orcas have been trained to perform a variety of behaviours and tricks in captivity which has contributed to our understanding of their intelligence and cognitive abilities. However, animal welfare advocates argue that captive orcas suffer physically and mentally.

7. Orcas Have a Language

Orcas communicate with each other using a complex system and a specific language.  For different purposes such as social bonding, hunting and navigation they produce whistles, clicks and pulsed calls. Dialects or variations in their vocalizations that are specific to particular groups or populations are common within orca populations. Killer whales living in different regions have different dialects. The dialects distinguish between members of their group and those from other groups. Dialect differences can occasionally be as significant as those between Swahili and English. Individual orcas have their unique calls which scientists have also observed are similar to human names and may help them identify themselves and other individuals within their social network. The study of orca communication is a fascinating field that is still evolving.

8. Just like Humans they go through Menopause

Top 10 Facts about Orcas

Female orcas (also known as killer whales) go through menopause, just like human females. Only humans, orcas and short-finned pilot whales are known to experience this phenomenon. Female orcas typically stop reproducing in their 30s or 40s, but they can live for several more decades beyond that. Researchers believe that orcas go through menopause to conserve their energy and resources for the benefit of their offspring and their wider pod. By no longer reproducing, older female orcas can help care for and protect their grandchildren and other younger members of the pod, passing on valuable knowledge and experience. This unique aspect of orca biology has fascinated scientists for years.

9. Orcas Vs Great White Sharks!……Orca Wins

Orcas, scare off great white sharks. Sharks and a variety of marine animals are hunted down and killed by powerful predators.  Orcas have been observed attacking and killing great white sharks in several documented instances where.  To take down a shark, orcas have been observed working together in a coordinated effort.  The reason why orcas can scare off great white sharks is speculated to be their larger size, speed and intelligence. Orcas are also known to be highly social animals and may use their numbers to intimidate and overpower a shark. Some individual sharks may still attempt the fatal mistake of attacking an orca.

10.  Orcas are an Apex Species with no Natural Predators

Orcas are at the top of the food chain in their ecosystem meaning they are apex predators. Fish, squid, birds, seals, sea lions and even other whales are part of killer whales’ diet. No animals regularly prey on them in the wild because they have no natural predators. Environmental factors such as pollution and climate change affect them. They can also face threats from human activities such as hunting, habitat destruction, and being accidentally caught in fishing gear. Conservation efforts are crucial to their survival and have a significant impact on orca populations.
