John is an American Protestant pastor and author who hosts the international Christian radio and television program Grace to You. He is currently the pastor of Grace Community Church which is a non-denominational church in Sun Valley, California. John is currently the chancellor emeritus of The Master’s University in Santa Clarita and The Master’s Seminary.

John is acknowledged as one of the most influential preachers by Christianity Today. He has written more than 150 books, his book The MacArthur Study Bible has sold more than one million copies and has received a Gold Medallion Book Award.

1. John’s Early Life and Education

He was born on June 19, 1939. He is the grandson of Canadian Anglican minister Harry MacArthur and son of Baptist radio preacher Jack MacArthur. From 1957 to 1959, John followed in his father’s footsteps and enrolled at the fundamentalist Bob Jones College. He was later accepted to the Free Methodist Church’s Los Angeles Pacific College.

John was granted a Masters of Divinity from the Bible Institute of Los Angeles in 1963. John was also given an honorary degree from Talbot Theological Seminary and Grace Graduate School.

2. The Beginning of His Career

From 1964 to 1966, John was hired by his father as associate pastor at the Harry MacArthur Memorial Bible Church which is now known as Calvary Bible Church in Burbank, California. In 1966, John was hired as the faculty representative for Talbot Theological Seminary.fuytrew On February 9, 1969, John was hired as the youngest pastor at the non-denominational Grace Community Church of Sun Valley, California.

3. The Growth of His Ministry Through The Years

The Grace Community Church created a radio and television program called Grace to You, which is broadcast throughout much of the world, was created by the Grace media team in 1977. It was first broadcast in Baltimore, Maryland. John was made President of Los Angeles Baptist College, now known as The Master’s University, in 1985. John was made the President of the new Master’s Seminary in 1986. On June 5, 2011, John preached through the entire New Testament, this was one of his life goals since he began preaching on the Grace Community pulpit.

He believes that scripture is inerrant and infallible because it is the word of God. John believes that as protestants, we are obliged to render full submission to the Scripture above all else and that to mishandle the word of God is to misrepresent the one who wrote it. 

On multiple occasions, John has claimed to hold the sign gifts described in the Bible which was temporarily granted to the apostles to authenticate the origin and truth of the scriptures. John argues that modern visions, revelations, dreams, and prophecies are all false, and lies. He has shared his belief that the Charismatic movement has stolen the Holy Spirit and created a golden calf.

5. The Submission to Christ

John believes that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord and believe in your heart, you will be saved. John argues that confessing Jesus Christ as Lord is a necessary component of free grace theology. He states that in order for one to ensure eternal security, one should be saved with no regard for what they believe in. This led to raised controversy within American evangelicalism and theologian Charles Ryrie and Zane C. Hodges who argued that John’s ministry was teaching a form of works-based salvation.

6. Controversial Views and Disputes

John has been a critic of same-sex marriage, the social justice movement, the ordination of women, and the Roman Catholic Church. John has noted that sexual orientation was not hardwired by God and compared it to adulterers and bank robbers. John has shared that sexual orientation is a born trait. He has delivered multiple sermons where he discusses these issues.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, John chose to continue services at Grace Community Church and insisted that no one from the church had become seriously ill despite the reports to the contrary. This led Los Angeles County to sue the church over its refusal to close down. The church later claimed that the County was violating the right to freedom of religion. The lawsuits were settled out of court and the state of California had to pay $400,000 to Grace Community Church.

6. Improper Response to Domestic Abuse Cases

On February 2023, a story was published stating that Grace Community Church advises wives to stay in sexually and physically abusive marriages. A source from the church faced church discipline in front of the congregation for divorcing her husband David Gray. It was noted that John publically shamed her in front of the congregation and modeled how to suffer for Christ by enduring the abuse of her husband. His response to the situation gave a bad look not only to the congregation but also to international followers. 

7. John’s Comments On Stephen Futrick and Beth Moore

In 2012 at the annual Shepherd’s Conference, he labeled Stephen as an unqualified pastor. He noted that Stephen was not qualified by Biblical standards to be a pastor. Later in 2019, at the Truth Matters Conference, John stated that in the Bible there is no case that can be made for women preachers. Many viewed his comments as rude and unnecessary. It came as a shock to his followers because it seemed like he was attacking other preachers instead of working with them to spread the word of God.

Aside from his radio program Grace to You, John shares his sermons and teachings through podcasts and YouTube. John has also written a number of books that talk about different topics. Most of his books have been translated into multiple languages and have been noted to help people deepen their connection with Christ.

John also speaks at conferences and events around the world and has managed to gain a huge following on social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter. He uses these platforms to share quotes, sermons, and other preaching materials.

9. MacArthur’s Influence On The Younger Generation

The church was founded in 1956 by Charles Feinberg. The Current pastor is John MacArthur who has been serving since 1969. The church is known for its conservative theology and sovereignty of God. It also focuses on expository preaching which means that sermons focus on a particular biblical passage. The church has an extensive media ministry including online resources, radio programs, and podcasts. The Master’s Seminary provides training for pastors and church leaders.
