These remarkable achievements have exhibited traits of emotion, intelligence, and empathy which have endeared them to people around the world. It should be noted that over the years, Gorillas have been considered a genius species. Primatologists like Dian Fossey have dedicated their lives to understanding gorillas and their personalities.

I have always taken an interest in gorillas their epic history as well as their captivating tales. With the introduction of modern media, gorillas have been in several films that cater to adults and children. They are generally mentioned as the main characters in every story. In this article, I will explore fascinating facts about 10 Famous Gorillas.

1. Koko

She is a Western lowland gorilla born in 1972 at the San Francisco Zoo. She is known for using American Sign Language as a way of communicating. Koko knows over 1,000 signs and even understands spoken English. She can express complex thoughts and emotions, request objects, and describe experiences. It should be noted that Koko has formed deep bonds with her caregivers which shows that gorillas can exhibit empathy, grief, and humor.

Through Koko’s achievements, researchers are able to understand more about gorillas and their ability to mimic human behavior. Even though we have a long way to go before we fully understand gorillas, Koko is the step humanity needs to take.

2. Titano

He is a fictional gorilla who is mutated by a genetic experiment. He is from the 2018 film Rampage. Titano is a modified silverback gorilla who escaped confinement and embarks on a rampage through Chicago. However, he ultimately helps to save the city and is a prime example of the dangers of unchecked genetic manipulation. Titano’s journey explores themes of animal rights and the power of human connection.

3. Amala

She was born in captivity at the Oklahoma Zoo. In 2010, she was rescued by the California-based sanctuary Primarily Primates. Amala received love and care which she needed to thrive. Within no time, Amala was able to gain widespread attention with the release of the Disney+ documentary “The Biggest Little Farm: The Return” Amala has resonated with audiences worldwide and has also raised awareness about the plight of captive primates.

4. King Kong

He is an iconic ape who captured the imagination of audiences since 1933. His design was inspired by primates such as gorillas and even prehistoric Gigantopithecus. King Kong is known for the 1933, 1976, and 2005 films. He has influenced giant monster movies and pop culture in general. The original film was praised for its use of special effects and its portrayal of complex creatures. The development of King Kong in the films showed that gorillas are much more than we know. Even though he is a fictional character who is to say that primates are not as smart?

5. Kala

She is a fictional ape from the Disney film Tarzan. She is known for her fierce protectiveness and nurturing spirit. Kala has been the epitome of childhood imagination. Her character was loveable as well as somewhat realistic. Of course, gorillas cannot raise human children, but, they can exhibit emotions.

In the film, Kala develops a bond with Tarzan which is a common thing that has been noted in real-life gorillas. Real or not, the portrayal of Kala was more than just imagination, it was based on the interactions humans have had with gorillas. 

6. Titus

He is a majestic silverback mountain gorilla known for his leadership skills. He was born on August 24, 1974, in the Virunga Mountains. He was in the documentary film Titus: The Gorilla King which showcased his journey. Titus was compassionate, wise, and peaceful. He also has a great number of offspring which significantly contributed to the population of mountain gorillas. Titus lived till the age of 35 and died in 2009. He is remembered for his peaceful leadership and deep connections. 

7. An Ape Named Ape

He is a memorable character in the live-action film George of the Jungle. He is known for being a close friend of George. Ape serves as a loyal companion and advisor who often offers witty remarks and insightful observations. Ape is voiced by the renowned actor John Cleese.

He is a western lowland gorilla who is known for his habit of walking on two legs. He is also known for his intelligence, cleanliness, and dislike of getting his hands dirty. Louis has gained a lot of popularity for his playing personality. It should be noted that he used leaves and paper bags to clean his hands and feet. His behavior is a big discovery for mankind because we are one step closer to fully understanding gorillas.

The second Louis is also a western lowland gorilla who lives at the Ape Action Africa sanctuary in Spain. He is known for his artistic talents. Louis is able to create abstract paintings while using paints and brushes. His artwork has been exhibited worldwide and has gained international attention. His creativity and expression have raised awareness about gorilla welfare.

9. Calaya

She is a western lowland gorilla living at the Smithsonian National Zoological Park in Washington, D.C. She is known for being the first gorilla to be born through artificial insemination. Calaya was born on August 30, 2002, at the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle. She is famous for being a dominant female who often takes charge of the group. Calaya’s birth was a breakthrough in gorilla conservation. Through her birth, scientists are able to increase the genetic diversity of captive gorilla populations.

He is a mountain gorilla known for raising awareness about the predicament of his species. He was born in 1965 and lived in the Virunga Mountains of Rwanda. Digit formed a special bond with primatologist Dian Fossey. Digit witnessed a playful nature towards Dian which intensified their bond. However, in 1977, Digit’s life was cut short when poachers killed him.

To honor him, Dian Fossey established the Digit Fund which was later renamed the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund. The organization is dedicated to gorilla conservation, protecting habitats, educating the public, and conducting research. Digit’s story is used as a reminder of the importance of gorilla conservation.

All in all, gorillas are an intelligent species that have intrigued a lot of people. Their human-like behavior is not only uncanny but amazing to watch. So far, we have been able to understand that gorillas can communicate like humans and even have talents just like humans. However, we are still behind on all the possibilities that gorillas can surpass. With the way science and technology are intertwined, who knows what is in store for gorillas in the future?
