A Brief Guide to Turkey鈥檚 Capital City, Ankara

To many who don鈥檛 know Turkey and some tourists as well, Istanbul remains the most important city in Turkey to visit. However, it is Ankara, Turkey鈥檚 capital city and the political centre of this modern Republic that also deserves some attention.

Located close It鈥檚 a city with machinations of a political capital 鈥� the city of bureaucrats & diplomats, embassies and the military. The population is mostly employed by the government, related institutions, universities, hospitals, embassies and Turkey鈥檚 most famous and top universities and schools.

Modern Turkey鈥檚 founder, Kemal Ataturk, put Ankara on the map during WW1 and the Turkish War of Independence. A relatively small town during that time, it rose to prominence soon after the establishment of the Republic. It has a Roman citadel perched upon a hill and was known in the past for its Angora (Mohair), goat fleece fibre used in textiles. Turkey remains one of the top producers of mohair in the world and Angora goats are a Turkish domesticated breed of goats.

Plitvice 鈥� It was like Magic

I am not a National Park 鈥榞roupie鈥�, but the Plitvice Lakes National Park blew me away. (Yes, I think Yosemite is spectacular and Yellowstone is a must visit for nearly everyone, but in general exploring Tokyo, or 麻豆APP, or the coastal villages of Uruguay, are just more me.)

In June, my wife and I went to Croatia to spend 10 days exploring the coast and islands in the mid-section of the country. I had the trip basically outlined when a friend of my wife told her not to miss the Plitvice lakes. She put an explanation on that point (pun intended), by saying the only mistake she made was not spending the night in the area so she could devote a whole day in the park.
