30 Things to Know About Veterans Day


 

Vateran day was birthed by World War I which involved the Central Powers countries (German, Ottoman, and Austro-Hungarian Empires, Bulgaria, South Africa, Somalia, and Sultanate of Darfur and others) and the Allied Powers countries (France, British Empire, Russia, Serbia, Montenegro, Japan, Belgium, Italy, Romania, Portugal, United States, Thailand, Greece, Armenia, Emirates of Nejd and Hasa, China, Idrisid Emirate of Asir, New Zealand, Australia, British India among others.) The war began on July 28, 1914, and was fought for four years, three months, and two weeks. The end of World War I on November 11, 1918, marked an important period in all the countries that participated. there were millions of casualties both military and civilians in both the central Powers countries and the Allied Powers countries. Due to the millions who lost their lives, the day is hence marked as the day when the war ended. It is for this reason that   Commonwealth countries observe veterans day on November 11. The United States commemorates the women who have sacrificed to serve in the Army. In 2018, most of the commonwealth countries led by the United States marked 100 years since the end of World War I. Veteran days are usually a remembrance day where nations remember their fallen soldiers in the line of duty.

It is usually a special remembrance day in America when the American Legion Auxiliary gives out red crepe paper poppies every November 11th of each year.

2. A Tomb of Unknown Soldiers

There is a tomb of the unknown soldiers located in Âé¶¹APP that is known as the international wat memorial in Netro Dame. France holds a parade in honor of the unknown soldiers buried in the tomb and it is also not clear if there were some civilians. The nature of the fighting that was witnessed during World War I was intense, hence it was unclear who was included in the tomb.

The civilians and military who survived World War I feel appreciation whenever countries commemorate the day. 

4. Archbishop of Canterbury’s Role on Veteran’s Day

Britain’s most important days are marked with a service from the headquarters of the Anglican church based in London on Ludgate Hill, the highest point of the city, and with its leader as the Archbishop of Canterbury. During the services to mark veteran Day, such services are held at the Cathedral known as St. Paul’s Cathedral. For instance, in 2015, the Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby led a service attended by Queen Elizabeth II and Prime Minister David Cameron.

In Belgium, they take the day seriously and observe a one-minute silence at 11 am. All businesses are closed including banks and government offices. They honor and give thanks to the veterans who lost their lives in World War I.

The commemoration of veterans day is a great inspiration to the citizens in particular the young generation who have no history of what transpired during World War I.

7. Commemoration of Veteran’s Day in Austalia

Australia is a Commonwealth country that participated in World War I together with other countries in the Allied Powers. Their soldiers died in Gallipoli in Turkey. They were a team from Australia and New Zealand and the two countries commemorate the day on April 25 of every year.

8. France Veteran Day

The day is commemorated with parades with armed forces representatives laying wreaths at the war memorial, including the Ring of Remembrance. 

9. It’s an Inspiration Day for the Soldiers Serving Currently

As the day is being commemorated, it inspires the military men and women in service currently. They feel their duty is recognized and of importance to the citizens and the leadership of their countries.

10. Kenya Commemorates Veteran’s Day 

Kenya marks its veteran day with prayer and laying of wreaths at the various war memorials in Mbaraki, Mombasa County, CWGC Cemeteries at Ngong forest, Nanyuki, and Gilgil.

11. Kenya Defence Forces Veteran Day

In 2019, the Cabinet Secretary for Defence Ambassador Raycelle Omamo and other Military Officers took time to commemorate and celebrate the acts of courage and gallantry by the Kenya Defence Forces heroes and heroines. October 14th is a special day in the Defence Forces of Kenya since 2012 when operation Linda Nchi was launched. Since then, they honor the soldiers for their sacrifice to defend their country every year. In 2019, The Cabinet Secretary in particular thanked the families of the soldiers for supporting them while on duty. She also emphasizes the need for soldiers to get support from the KDF command and the nation at large.

12. Mashujaa Day in Kenya

Kenya honors the people that have made an impact in the country on October 20 each year. The day is important in Kenya and it’s usually a public holiday. However, if the day falls on a weekend, Monday becomes a public holiday.

13. New York City Veteran’s Day

At Fifth Avenue in New York City, there is usually a veteran day parade which is the longest in the history of veteran day celebrations and also the oldest in American history. The first such parade was held on November 11, 1919.

14. New Zealand’s Veteran Day Commemoration

It is with the Commonwealth countries under Britain and honors the soldiers lost at Gallipoli in Turkey where they participated in World War I. The commemoration happens on April 25 of every year.

15. Queen Elizabeth II Attends Veteran’s Day Commemoration

Veteran days are a significant day that Britain recognizes with honor. In 2015, The Queen, her husband Prince Philip,, and her son Prince Charles together with Prime Minister David Cameron attended a thanksgiving service that marked the 70th anniversary of victory in Europe known as the VE Day at London’s Westminster Abbey. The day was marked by a parade of serving military officers and veterans who marched pasts the Treasury building. This was to recognize the wartime leader Winston Churchill, who addressed people from the Treasury Building Balcony to mark the VE day.

Poppy Day is a celebration day in the Commonwealth countries in memory of the First World War Soldiers who died in 1919 in the line of duty. The day is also known as Remembrance Day. It is observed on November 11 every year by the member states t mark the end of First World War hostilities. member states in the United Kingdom (UK) is a memorial day that is usually observed in Commonwealth states.

17. South Africa Veteran Day

The former President of South Africa declared February 21st as the Armed Forces Day to commemorate their service to the country. He set aside the day as the Commander-in-Chief of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF).

18. The First Commemoration of Veteran’s Day

Veteran’s day was first commemorated on November 11, 1947, in Birmingham, Alabama. The event was organized by Raymond Weeks, a World War II veteran. The day was marked by various festive activities including a parade.

In the United Kingdom, it is an annual event celebrated in June in memory of British Armed Forces Soldiers who have died defending their country. This was first observed in 2006 but has never been declared an official event.

November 11 is celebrated in the United States o America in honor of armed forces soldiers and those peopled who have died in the country’s wars. President Woodrow Wilson on November 11, 1919, sent out a message to his countrymen on the first Armistice Day on his feelings bout the Americans and the effects of World War I. The day marks the end of World War I, also known as Armistice Day. It is a federal holiday in the United States of America. There is a Memorial Day which is commemorated in May for all the military men and women who have died while in service. There is also Armed Force Day that honors the United States military in service.

The United States of America recognizes women who have to serve in the United States Military by having a special day to honor them.

22. Veterans Day in Canada

Canada honors all the brave Canadians who have served the country and also defended the values of the nation between November 5 to 11. In  2022 Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau issued a statement in honor of the Canadian veterans. However, in Manitoba, it is not a public holiday while in states that observe the day begins with a special mass or service.

23. Veterans Day in Nigeria

Nigeria has a reason to commemorate veterans day referred to as Remembrance Day due to the fighting and also external wars. The day is in honor of World War I and II military and civilian who died during the struggle for their country’s freedom. In addition, it is a public holiday that is commemorated on January 15 of every year. It is also known as Armed Forces Remembrance Day (AFRD).

24. Veterans of the Afghanistan War

The United States of America was involved in the war in Afghanistan and Iraq for 20 years. They lost many soldiers and also had many who were disabled. This was a cause for commemorating the end of the fierce fighting. The survivors have become heroes of the war.

25. Veterans are not only Human

Working dogs that have assisted in securing security have also been honored as veterans. This is observed on March 13 as America commemorated the National K9 Veterans day honoring military men and women including dogs that have been on record for enhancing security in American history.

26. Veteran Day Observed for Peacekeeping Soldiers

The day is not only marked to honor military men and women who have served in the war but also those who have participated in restoring peace. There are several peacekeeping missions that have been carried out in Lebanon, India, Pakistan, the Middle East, South Sudan, the Central African Republic, D.R. Congo, and various peacekeeping missions by United Nations around the globe. 

27. Veteran’s Day is Never a School Holiday

The fact is during the commemoration of Veteran day, schools operate normally and never close to joining in the remembrance of the military men and women.

28. Veteran Day at Arlington National Cemetery

The is a 624-acre land known as the Arlington National Cemetery where more than 400,000 military members together with their families are buried. On November 11 at 11 am every year, there is a commemoration of the day where veterans of World War I are remembered and honored.

29. Veteran Day in Memory of Torit Mutiny

Khartoum which represents Southern Sudan today commemorates veterans day on August 18 as a day to honor the men who made a great contribution to have their country gain freedom and more importantly secure their own country. Hence Southern Sudan’s August 18, 1955, was their turning point a fact in memory of the veteran day.
