30 Most Famous People & Celebrities That Rocked the Afro

The renowned English playwright, William Shakespeare, in Romeo and Juliet, famously poses the question, ‘What’s in a name?’  Surfing through the net for iconic figures who have rocked the afro, I considered the question, ‘What’s in a hairstyle?’ Well, the afro is originally traceable to African civilizations, characterized by its often unique kinky texture, featuring a tight, sometimes curly, coiled, or voluminous look. It became particularly associated with the Civil Rights Movement as a symbol of Black power, identity, and pride in the U.S.A during the 1960s.

Over the years, it has become a mainstream fashion trend and a continued celebration of natural hair for many. We’ve seen famous people and celebrities rock stunning afro styles, whether as a political statement or even just out of style preference. Some have it as part of their brand, and it would probably be hard to recognize them in any other hairstyle. From the iconic, voluminous afro by Angela Davis, to the short, stunningly black curly afro worn by Lauryn Hill, here’s a list of 30 famous people and celebrities who have rocked the afro.
