25 Most Famous Vampires From TV, Literature and Mythology

The vampire has been the topic of myth and fiction for centuries. Although there are many different kinds of vampires, the most well-known is the undead monster that emerges from its grave at night to feed on the blood of the living.

Dracula from Bram Stoker’s novel is undoubtedly the most well-known vampire. Prince Vlad Tepes III (1431–1476), often known as Vlad the Impaler, is thought to be the inspiration for the vampire Dracula. The second child of Vlad Dracul, Vlad is famous in Romania for having fought against Ottoman Turk invaders. The name Vlad has a mixture of tradition, history, and (for some) even horror.

He is thought to have been the cause of more than 80,000 deaths and tortured his enemies before having them executed. However, apart from Dracula who else do you know? read on and discover the 25 most famous vampires from TV, literature and mythology.

1. Peter Plogojowitz-Historical

A Serbian man named Peter Plogojowitz passed away in 1725, and the locals believed he was a vampire. Many stated that Peter visited them at night shortly after he was buried; some of them afterwards passed away. Days after he allegedly received a visitation, even Peter’s own son passed away from severe blood loss.

Peter was one of the first known cases of vampirism and the target of one of the most intense vampire hysteria. It didn’t take long for the villagers to demand that Peter be found and for the authorities to order an end to the vampire’s activity.

2. Rosalie Hale-The Twilight Saga

The Twilight Saga’s Bella and Edward may be the prominent figures, but they are by no means the only or most interesting vampires in the series. Fans of the books can confirm that Rosalie Hale is undoubtedly one of the more alluring characters.

She first gives off the impression of being irate, possibly even superficial, and preoccupied with keeping her family away from Bella and maintaining her outward beauty. When it comes down to it, she is a passionately devoted person who has grown from her previous mistakes and a vampire who would prefer to live a short human life. Because she isn’t the stereotypical vampire that is frequently depicted in the media, she is a beloved character among readers of the story.

 3. Arnold Paole-History

Arnold Paole, like Peter Plogojowitz, is a historical vampire whose name keeps popping up in history books. Before he passed away in 1726, a Serbian man named Paole (also like Peter Plogojowitz) claimed to have been bitten by a vampire, which made him feel cursed.  People in the village started dying soon after he passed away from injuries suffered in a farming accident, and everyone blamed the recently deceased Paole.

Paole’s corpse was found by the villagers, who discovered evidence that he was a vampire. He had longer hair and nails and blood in his mouth. The villagers killed Paole by severing his head, burning his corpse, and inserting a stake through his heart, like something out of a contemporary Dracula film. They had no idea that 17 more people would perish four years later, allegedly at the hands of a vampire.

4. Morbius-Marvel Comics

Morbius is a bit different from other vampires in popular culture, who obviously draw their mythology from Dracula. He is not supernatural; rather, he is based on science fiction. Morbius, who was formerly an enemy of Spider-Man, developed his vampire-like traits through an experiment rather than a bite.

The character has developed into more of a sympathetic antihero and less of a villain over time. He really spends the majority of his adventures battling crime while simultaneously attempting to “cure” his vampirism, which is something other vampires don’t typically have the opportunity to do in their own mythology. He has maintained his popularity since 1971, and the fact that he will star in a live-action film demonstrates his enduring appeal.

5. Lord Ruthven-Literature

Think again if you believe that Dracula is the first fictional vampire to appear in classic Gothic literature. The honour belongs to Lord Ruthven from the short novel The Vampyre. Lord Ruthven is the vampire in The Vampyre, which was first published in 1819 (Dracula followed in 1897). Lord Ruthven is an elegant, dapper lord who can captivate people’s attention—which is unfortunate for them because his preferred victims are innocent, pure women.

6. David-Film

David is a character from the film The Lost Boys. David, portrayed by Kiefer Sutherland, is the head of a motorbike gang of vampires and is a bleach-blonde vampire with blue eyes. David is a tough enemy despite not being the Head Vampire. The town of Santa Carla, also known as “the Murder Capital of the World,” is terrorised by David and his gang in The Lost Boys.

David is different from other vampires because he communicates the idea that being a vampire is fun, liberating, and comes with no responsibilities (except for the Head Vampire, of course). He truly embraces his evilness, though, and whenever he enters a vampiric frenzy, he adopts a demonic appearance. No one is safe from David’s bloodlust when interacting with him.

7. Selene- Underworld

Since both vampires and werewolves first appeared in literature, many supernatural franchises have started looking at the interactions between them. Underworld does the same approach.

Here, vampires aren’t the bad guys, which is a difference. While there may be one or two nice guys in the majority of vampire stories, the villains usually outnumber them. For Selene, it’s different. She is the heroine of her story; yet, despite her best efforts, she is pulled into a conflict that dates back thousands of years. Selena makes for an interesting heroine as she fights to keep a delicate balance in her society, even though not every instalment of the film series is adored.

8. Angel/Angelus – Television

Angel is a vampire with a soul. One of the first well-known vampires with a soul was Angel, whose character initially appeared on the hit TV series Buffy: The Vampire Slayer. Before Angel, all vampires were viewed as bloodthirsty monsters with no regard for human behaviour.

Following Angel, it somehow became accepted practice for vampires to have souls… and sentiments. Of course, if Angel ever lost his soul, he would return to his evil ways and become known as Angelus. You’d never want to meet Angelus.

9. Katherine PierceThe Vampire Diaries

In The Vampire Diaries, Elena is mostly responsible for the plot. The audience is expected to root for the human-turned-vampire, and that is her. The viewer, however, is exposed to a completely different character when her vampire twin Katherine is revealed.

Similar to Rosalie from Twilight, Katherine is initially introduced in a very specific way, only for the reader to learn later that there is much more to her past. Despite being the major villain in the narrative, she genuinely only wants the opportunity to recover the life that was taken from her. No matter how many crimes she does, Katherine is understandable since all she wants is the chance to live without being on the run.

10. Juliet van Heusen-Series

Not every vampire in popular culture is always a gloomy, melancholy tale. Some of them are included in kid-friendly television shows, offering viewers fresh perspectives on the stories—just as Wizards of Waverly Place does when introducing Juliet.

With love interests from the opposing groups, the story, which draws inspiration from Romeo and Juliet, presents both vampires and werewolves to the Russo brothers. When it comes to pop culture vampires, Juliet is a sweetness, even though parts of her stories on Wizards of Waverly Place don’t really make sense in the long run. She offers a modern, kid-friendly interpretation of vampire lore.

11. Carmilla-Literature

You may not be aware, but Dracula was followed in print by another vampire novel. One of the most famous pieces of vampire fiction, Carmilla (1872), has a female vampire named, you guessed it, Carmilla, rather than a typical male vampire. Laura, the book’s narrator, rapidly makes friends with Carmilla because she is seductive and charming. Laura soon begins to suffer from dreams about a cat-like creature that enters her chamber at night and bites her above the chest. At the same moment, strange deaths occur among ladies all around the area.

Carmilla differs from other vampires in that she doesn’t just take a victim and guzzle their blood all at once. She initially gains their trust and even displays signs of love, but this love eventually turns into possessiveness, which develops into obsession, and ultimately kills the person she is focusing on.

12. Jubilee- Marvel Comics

Jubilee was commonly recognised as an X-Men character in the 1990s, but it wasn’t until much later in Marvel comics that she was changed into a vampire. While not every X-Men fan adored her “firework” mutant skills, many fans were intrigued by her vampire narrative and wondered what would happen to her after that.

 13. Jerry Dandridge-Film

Jerry is attractive and charming, at least when he’s in his human form, much like his vampire ancestors. There’s no other way to put it, but Jerry is memorable for this reason. Fright Night had to be on this list for sure! The film is awesome. Still not convinced? If not, or if you only saw the remake, you must not have seen it.

14. Raphael Santiago- Shadowhunters

The Mortal Instruments was created from two different novel adaptations. The TV series Shadowhunters differs greatly more from the original material than the film, but it also explores more of the mythology surrounding the many Downworlders in the series, including Raphael and his fellow vampires.

Although vampires are initially portrayed as evil, Raphael turns into an ally of the series’ titular heroes, guarding the vampires in his clan while also assisting in the arrest of the more threatening enemies. A unique perspective on the interaction between vampires and humans can be found in the connection between Raphael and Isabelle in the television series Shadowhunters. She becomes hooked to his venom, while he only wants to heal her. Unlike contemporary media, it’s not ever romantic, and he never seeks to transform her.

15. Barnabas Collins-Series

Barnabas Collins was created in an effort to resurrect the formerly well-liked gothic horror soap opera Dark Shadows even though he was never supposed to be a part of the series. Because of how well-liked the character was, Barnabas ended up becoming the focus of the programme. Johnny Depp played the role of Barnabas in the 2012 film adaption.

16. Alice Cullen- The Twilight Saga

In many stories, vampires have a broad range of abilities. Superior strength, reflexes, and senses are highly prevalent. There is the occasional transformation into a bat. The Twilight Saga describes the characters’ talents as extensions of their human selves. Alice experiences visions of the future. She stands out in pop culture since that talent is typically used to depict witches.

 17. David-film

David is a fictional character from the film The Lost Boys. David, portrayed by Kiefer Sutherland, is a vampire with bleach-blonde hair and blue eyes who serves as the head of a motorbike gang of vampires. David is still a tough enemy despite not being the Head Vampire. David and his gang harass Santa Carla, also known as “the Murder Capital of the World,” in The Lost Boys.

David stands out from other vampires because he portrays being a vampire as fun, liberating, and without accountability. Along with that freedom, he fully embraces his evilness and assumes a demonic appearance anytime he enters a vampiric rage.

18. Damon Salvatore- The Vampire Diaries

Damon seems to be a wildcard when he appears on The Vampire Diaries. He doesn’t seem to care about blending in with others, doesn’t seem to mind who he harms, and just wants to enjoy himself with his vampire abilities. Of course, that’s not exactly accurate, and as the series progresses, he develops into one of the most complex and fascinating characters.

19. Lestat de Lioncourt-Literature

The characters from Anne Rice’s novels are well-known to vampire fans everywhere. These vampires, from Armand to Louis and the Queen of the Damned, Akasha, have had an important effect on the vampire community. Lestat de Lioncourt by Anne Rice, however, is undoubtedly the most well-known vampire. Lestat is brash, obstinate, and captivating.

20. Bill Compton- True Blood

The first season of True Blood aired in 2008, right in the middle of another vampire craze. Americans desired a seductive and enigmatic vampire, and British actor Stephen Moyer provided them with Bill Compton. Every red-blooded American girl’s heart was stolen by Compton, who had lived and died in the Antebellum South and wished nothing more than to be treated the same as other people.

21. Spike-Series

Angel is usually the first vampire that comes to mind when people think about Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s vampires. Although Buffy’s initial love was a compelling character whose development over the series is interesting to watch, Spike stands out as a more memorable one. Spike, also known as William the Bloody, was a terrifying vampire who had already murdered several vampire slayers before entering Sunnydale.

22. Marceline The Vampire Queen-Cartoon

Children and adults both loved the animated series Adventure Time. Despite the fact that Jake and Finn are the show’s major emphasis, Marceline the Vampire Queen was a great addition to the gang and is frequently cited as one of the program’s best characters. She is a strong, hilarious female bass player who isn’t a damsel in distress, making her a great role model for young people, and she also brings a lot of humour and sass to the programme.

23. Akasha-Movie

25 Most Famous Vampires From TV, Literature and Mythology

The vampires in the film Queen of the Damned are still memorable, none more so than Akasha, despite the fact that it wasn’t as well received as the book. Even though it was one of her only cinematic roles, the late Aaliyah delivered the kind of seductive, rage-filled attitude that the part required. She played the Queen of the Damned herself.

The oldest vampire in existence, Akasha, lived for centuries as a living statue. She starts murdering vampires as soon as she wakes up. She offers the possibility to join her campaign to establish a new world order for those she is unable to kill.

24. David-Film

David, played by Keifer Sutherland, is one of the main reasons The Lost Boys has become a cult favourite. He wears a leather jacket, rides a motorbike, and has a superior attitude, yet spectators seem to find him to be as captivating as Michael and Starr.

25. The Countess-Series

Liz Taylor, James Patrick March, and most famously The Countess are just a few of the memorable characters that fans of American Horror Story will remember from season five. The Countess, as portrayed by Lady Gaga, is a powerful woman who will stop at nothing to maintain her position.

Despite this, she shows compassion for others around her on multiple occasions; for example, she is in charge of assisting Liz Taylor in accepting who she is and she genuinely cares for the kids she has taken in.

The question of whether vampires exist or not is quite debatable but what I know for sure is the fact that at one point or another everyone has been hooked on werewolves or vampire stories, I personally loved Twilight, all the books and the movies were fantastic that I shed a tear when it was all over. What’s your favourite vampire movie or series?
