20 Movies about Community: Celebrating the Power of Togetherness

One can easily feel alone and cut off from the world when sitting alone. However, the power of community is the subject of many of my favorite movies. I’m constantly reminded of the enormous influence we can have when we band together as I watch characters develop relationships, stand by one another through adversity, and overcome obstacles. That so many filmmakers have captured the magic of human connection on screen and have brought heartwarming tales of friendship and camaraderie is something I’m very happy about.

The films highlight the positive energy of unity, ranging from traditional stories of neighbors bonding to superheroes discovering their strength lies in their group dynamic. Upon the end of the film, I am always left feeling optimistic as I know that despite the fictional nature of the characters, the bonds they form reflect a universal truth – humans are better off working together than apart. My favorite community-focused films and the lessons they have taught me about valuing the strength of the group are the subjects of this post. Nobody can’t accomplish anything when they work together to achieve a common goal.

These are twenty movies that show the power of togetherness:

1. Hidden Figures (2016)

The 2016 film Hidden Figures, at the top of the list, eloquently illustrates how community and unity can enable us to accomplish great things. This movie tells the amazing true story of three female African-American mathematicians who excelled at NASA in the 1960s and overcame gender and racial barriers by supporting one another. Their tenacity and intelligence, together with the camaraderie they eventually established with their colleagues, enabled them to make revolutionary contributions to the space program. It serves as a motivating reminder that when we work together to achieve a common goal, we can overcome any challenge that stands in our way.

2. Bend It Like Beckham (2002)

For soccer lovers, this movie must remind you about the Manchester United and Â鶹APP Saint Germaine football clubs legend, David Beckham. Bend It Like Beckham demonstrates how people can come together through the friendship of two young women with different upbringings but a love of soccer. A bond is formed between Jess and Jules that gives them the courage to follow their dreams despite cultural misunderstandings and conflicting expectations. When faced with discrimination, their community gives them courage. A common interest or goal can unite people from different backgrounds and enable them to accomplish more together than they could on their own, as the film masterfully illustrates.

3. The Pursuit of Happyness (2006)

In the movie, Chris Gardner was up against overwhelming odds: lack of money, homelessness, and competition for his ideal internship. However, an unexpected group of people came together in support of him, demonstrating the strength of people coming together to help those in need. Acts of compassion and decency helped Chris succeed in the end, from Christopher allowing the Gardners to stay in his empty apartment covertly to the pastor opening the shelter late so Chris’s son had a place to sleep. Overcoming hardship required a village. Together, people can overcome great adversity; this heartwarming true story demonstrates how showing empathy and support to others frequently reaps tenfold rewards.

4. Pay It Forward (2000)

We have witnessed a lot of good deeds in communities and the film Pay It Forward illustrates how deeds of kindness can spread throughout communities and inspire hope by following one boy’s dream to change the world by helping others. An initiative that transcends social, racial, and economic boundaries is started by Trevor when he devises a scheme to assist three individuals in exchange for them helping three others. It is kindness that binds total strangers together. The movie demonstrates the power of small deeds to bring about change and hope in our communities and around the globe. Individually and collectively, we possess the ability to change lives via compassion and empathy.

5. Up (2009)

In the film Up, a character, Carl finds new communal ties in the most unlikely places, giving him meaning. Throughout their journey, Carl, who is grieving and at first lonely in his balloon-powered home, forges deep bonds with his devoted dog Dug, and boy scout Russell. This peculiar trio creates a compassionate, intergenerational community. Within this adopted family that Carl forms, even the lost Kevin finds a place. Carl learns that even in the face of broken hearts and absent friends, making new friends can bring solace, purpose, and a reason to look forward to their shared adventures in the future. The movie does a beautiful job of showing how our common humanity can foster a sense of belonging and community.

6. The Shawshank Redemption (1994)

In case you don’t know, the power of togetherness can overcome hard times. Within the lonely walls of Shawshank Prison, Andy Dufresne learns that human connections can uplift and redeem the spirit, even in the darkest of circumstances. A community that transcends their circumstances is formed among the men as Andy befriends and helps his fellow prisoners, most notably Red. Andy inspires others with his tenacity, his honesty gains admiration, and his fortitude in the face of injustice. Andy’s bonds make things bearable that he couldn’t bear by himself. This moving movie subtly shows that even though we can’t always control external adversity, the support of our friends and family can get us through it.

7. Moonlight (2016)

Community can also help one discover themselves such as displayed in the film Moonlight. Growing up in a destitute Miami neighborhood, Chiron struggles to find his identity and a sense of belonging. Nevertheless, despite experiencing parental neglect and bullying, he has brief but profound human connection moments that change his life. The tenderness of Juan and his girlfriend’s care, the guidance of a drug dealer named Kevin, or even a straightforward apology from a long-time friend—all of these acts of kindness create the foundation of community that Chiron sorely needs. The film Moonlight deftly demonstrates how establishing social ties and connecting with one’s tribe can be a lifeline, particularly for those who are marginalized. Unity and mutual understanding among people provide light and direction in a divided world.

8. Whale Rider (2002)

One can always trust the community to make the right choices. The Maori community of Whangara faces the danger of losing their identity and legacy when a chieftain rejects his granddaughter as a possible heir because of her gender. People do, however, eventually come together in support of young Pai and her resolve to study tribal traditions and save whales that are in danger of extinction. The villagers embrace progress by defying patriarchal norms, bridging generational divides, and preserving cultural tradition. Pai gains self-assurance and a feeling of community through support from others. Her gifts and leadership flourish because of the power of unconditional acceptance. A tribe that uplifts the downtrodden maintains its collective spirit, as Whale Rider masterfully illustrates.

9. Stand By Me (1986)

A group of young misfit friends learns the true meaning of friendship and unity while searching for the body of a missing adolescent together on the train. Despite coming from unstable backgrounds, Gordie, Chris, Teddy, and Vern come together to form an unofficial family and help one another through the challenges and adult risks they encounter on their quest. Through exchanging difficult realities, hopes, jokes, and anxieties, they come to understand that they are not alone in the world at all. Despite hardships at home, they feel brave and like they belong because of their close-knit relationship. Stand by Me masterfully conveys how a simple act of friendship can give young people the community they need to heal and look forward to a bright future.

10. Selma (2014)

The film Selma serves as an example of how oppression can only be defeated by a united community. Martin Luther King Jr. organized supporters for equal voting rights when acts of violence against Black citizens who attempted to register to vote escalated. Fear and prejudice cannot split this diverse coalition of activists as they peacefully march into danger together. A common cause unites elders, students, white allies, and other groups of people. The movie most effectively shows how change begins with individuals and how a minority can inspire a nation and change history in the direction of justice through grassroots organizing, collaboration, and solidarity among all members of the community.

11. It’s a Wonderful Life (1946)

One golden rule in community life is that if you help others, you will be helped when you are in trouble. In his lowest points, George Bailey witnessed directly how his life has improved the lives of people in the neighborhood he called home. Although he has no personal responsibility for the scandal and ruin he finds himself in, his friends support him because he has stood by them through the years. George’s selfless acts of service to his town and its residents improved lives in some ways, from saving his brother from tragedy to preventing homes from falling into the hands of the avaricious Mr. Potter. The fantasy story highlights a profound truth by exposing the network of influence and responsibility that George established: we are often valued most for how we cheer and support those around us during both happy and sad times.

12. The Breakfast Club (1986)

With open discussions about their struggles, the students who are compelled to attend Saturday detention, find unexpected empathy and common ground despite having different backgrounds. These teenagers find out that they share more than just fears of bullying but also experience parental neglect and pressure to succeed. Unlikely friendships can flourish despite social stigmas because of the deeper human experiences that bind them beneath the surface. Barriers come down in just one day when the princess, outcast, rebel, brain, and athlete come together to form a small but respectful community. It shows in the movie that we can relate to almost anyone if we let our hearts open.

13. The Blind Side (2009)

The power of unity in the community can change people just as depicted in the film The Blind Side. The Tuohy family adopts Michael Oher, a homeless teenager who learns the value of community in addition to having a place to stay. Michael receives food, clothing, tutoring, and a sense of belonging from the Tuohys once they take him into their home. Feeling invisible and alone, Michael is welcomed into the family and becomes part of it. His success on and off the football field is a result of this unwavering love and support. “The Blindside,” which is based on a true story, demonstrates how lives can be improved when people welcome those whom society has forgotten or ignored into their homes and hearts. Since hope exists in the community.

14. Remember the Titans (2000)

Tensions in the community were high when the Black and White players on their Virginia high school football team were integrated in 1971. But thanks to Coach Boone’s inclusive leadership style and tireless work ethic, the team transcends racial boundaries and embraces its diversity as a strength. By getting to know one another’s histories and overcoming mistrust via a common struggle, they become close. Before long, animosity in the community gives way to pride in the team’s competence and empathy. Remember the Titans poignantly illustrates how teams that promote inclusiveness, tolerance for differences, and support for teammates both on and off the field can use sports to unite people.

15. Coco (2017)

Meet Miguel, whose love of singing takes him on a fantastical journey that reunites him with his ancestors, local customs, and the strength of following one’s true calling, even though his family has prohibited music for generations. Despite his family’s best efforts to protect him from alleged past wrongs, Miguel finds that music has created an unseen community that has supported him through difficult family dynamics, time, and death. Miguel’s family is united and community customs are revitalized by accepting his musical gifts. Coco creatively illustrates how cultural ties foster our identities when customs, despite being occasionally forgotten, continue to unite generations via a sense of shared identity.

16. Little Miss Sunshine (2006)

Olive, aged seven receives a chance to compete in the Little Miss Sunshine pageant, and the eccentric Hoover family encourages her by taking a dilapidated van for a long drive across the nation. Despite their dysfunctions, the Hoover family united in their goal of giving young Olive more authority. This strange community learns that family isn’t always traditional or ideal; it’s about showing up and being there when it matters most. Little Miss Sunshine, a quirky yet profound film, wryly honors the bonds that hold imperfect but loving families together over life’s rocky path.

17. To Kill a Mockingbird (1962)

Community unity can make the impossible possible, such as community members standing by you even when they don’t like you. Despite the deeply ingrained racism that permeates Maycomb, Atticus Finch’s unwavering morality in standing up for a black man who was wrongfully accused of rape illuminates his children’s innocent journey toward inclusion and justice in the film To Kill a Mockingbird. Scout and Jem receive stern criticism for Atticus’s support of Tom Robinson; however, Miss Maudie, their neighbor, and Calpurnia, the housekeeper, provide support, care, and insight. The children are guided by this informal community of conscience to uphold their convictions that everyone, regardless of skin color, deserves respect and equality under the law. The movie shows how a community of courageous mentors and allies is needed to uphold justice in the face of prejudice.

18. Slumdog Millionaire (2008)

The poor can become rich when a community is united, as seen in the film Slumdog Millionaire. After living in poverty as a child, Jamal’s destiny becomes entwined with others when he participates in the Indian version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? Memories flash back, illuminating how interactions with residents of his impoverished neighborhood ironically provided Jamal with the information he needed to ace the quiz show. This group of misfits shaped his outlook on life and gave him a sense of family, whether it was the quiet girl he loved or the gang of misfits from his childhood. Slumdog Millionaire is an ode to brotherhood and the resiliency fostered by the bonds between people who have nothing but each other by showing how Jamal succeeds as a direct result of the people and place that raised him.

19. The Help (2011)

A strongly united community can overcome the most evil treatments at any time. When Skeeter embarks on her mission to reveal the realities of being a Black domestic worker in Mississippi in the 1960s in the film The Help, she finds a whole community oppressed by racism. Nonetheless, by having the guts to tell their tales, they contribute to creating a stronger bond. These women, who experience intimate sisterhood across racial boundaries, bear witness to injustice as they endure everything from violent acts to deplorable working conditions. Despite their extreme struggles, these people’s voices speak loudly as a testament to the ability of marginalized people to affect social change when they come together, speak out, and support one another.

20. Dead Poets Society (1989)

The young men develop a friendship based on romantic ideas of creativity, passion, and rebellion against conformity when unconventional teacher Mr. Keating gives them the tools to seize the day through poetry in the 1989 film, Dead Poets Society. The impressionable students are bonded by covert late-night poetry club meetings held in caves. They find poignant truths about friendship, romantic love, and intellectual freedom after hearing a talk that gives them confidence in the human spirit. The boys find purpose and belonging as they discover their unique voices within a close-knit, supportive group. They become aware of life’s boundless possibilities via poetry and community.

I’m reminded that we all yearn for connection as the credits roll on these uplifting stories about community. If fictional characters can achieve so much together, just think of the possibilities if we reach out to each other in real life. I am inspired to form relationships by these films, as when we come together, we can achieve truly amazing things.
