20 Facts About Grasslands
Grasslands go by different names depending on where they are located and what the ecosystem in that particular place looks like. In Africa, grasslands are popularly known as the savannah while in North America, they are called prairies. In South America, the grasslands are known as pampas while in Europe and Asia, they are referred to as steppes. Despite their variation in the names in which they go by in different regions, they are the same things and thus have the same features. Therefore, this article will explore the 20 facts about grasslands to give the reader more knowledge on this topic.
1 Types of grasslands
A picture of grasslands by James Denham-
Grasslands are classified into two types which are tropical grasslands and temperate grasslands. These two types of grasslands are differentiated depending on the plant species that grow in them and the climate of the place the grassland is located. Temperate grasslands feature generally warm weather but it is also cold for a big part of the year which forces the plant life to adapt to the harsh conditions. Tropical grasslands, on the other hand, feature warm weather throughout the year which means that plant life is easily supported in those areas.
2 Antarctica is the only place that does not have grasslands
A quarter of the earth’s land surface is covered by grasslands and it is believed that it covered much more than that thousands of years ago but due to human activities, the area covered by grasslands has reduced. This means that most places have grasslands. Antarctica is the only place that does not have grasslands as part of its ecosystem because of the harsh climate that cannot support the growth of grasslands.
3 The grasslands in North America are slowly diminishing

The grasslands in North America which are commonly known as prairies are slowly diminishing in that only 2% of the original grasslands are now existing. This can be attributed to the fact that humans did away with the grassland vegetation and used the land for farming and thus destroying the grasslands. There are efforts made to preserve the grasslands in North America which include planting grass in areas that were used for farming.
4 Fires are essential in grasslands
It is quite surprising that fires are essential in ensuring that the grassland biome continues growing as one would expect that fire is the enemy of grasslands as it would burn them. However, fire is essential in that it clears out the dead grass and other invasive plants that may have accumulated and thus create room for new plants to grow. It is important to note that the fires should be periodic so that it does not completely obliterate the grassland ecosystem.
5 The location of grasslands

The grassland is a transitional ecosystem in that it is found between forests and deserts. This means that they require a different climate from forests and deserts for them to survive. Grasslands do well in a climate where there is just enough rain and sun, unlike forests that need too much water and deserts that require extreme heat.
6 The African savannah is at risk
With enhancements made in industries and technology, it means that people are immigrating from rural areas to urban areas as they go and look for work. To cater for the growing population in urban areas, houses have to be built and this means that the spaces where the savannah vegetation was growing are turned into residential places. In doing so, the percentage of the land covered by the grassland slowly reduces and the ecosystem starts becoming at risk.
7 The grassland is home to several animal life

Grasslands naturally support local wildlife when they are left in their original nature. This biome has an amazing range of species. Grasslands may be home to big cats, elephants, wolves, or foxes depending on where the area is located. Meerkats and prairie dogs, among other living things, can be buried there. The bison was among the biggest animals this biome supported in North America.
8 Grasslands do not grow throughout
The grass is the defining feature of grasslands in that even the name has grass in it. However, it is important to note that the grass does not grow all the time as one would think it does especially in temperate grasslands. There are two distinct seasons in grasslands: the growing season and the dormant season. Although the grasslands’ vegetation can thrive during the growing season, the environment is too chilly during the dormant season.
9 Grassland soils are ideal for farming
The soil located where the grasslands grow is ideal for farming and this can explain why most of the grasslands have been turned into farmlands in Northern America. Because grasslands have very deep roots that access subsurface water sources and bring those supplies to the surface, the soil is exceedingly fertile and ideal for growing more labour-intensive crops that provide food for people.
10 The bald eagle is mostly found in the North American grasslands
A picture of the bald eagle by Michael Gabler-
The North American grasslands commonly known as prairies feature different types of animal life but the most notable one is the bald eagle. The eagle has been the symbol of the United States of America since 1782 and this is one of the major reasons why it is the most notable animal in the grasslands. The animal is an unrelenting predator that preys on birds, reptiles and fish.
11 Grasslands are key in preventing erosion
Grasslands feature grasses that have deep root systems that hold the soil together and keep them from eroding. If there are no grasses in the grassland biome, it means that the soil will become loose and when there is wind or rainfall, they will be swept away. Therefore, grasses play an important role in ensuring that the soil in grasslands is not eroded away.
12 The North American grasslands were filled with bison
A picture of the American Bison by Kurt. The animal is domiciled in the North American Grasslands-
The early 19th century featured more than 12 million bison that were inhabiting the North American grasslands. This means that they were the majority of the animal life found in the savannah. However, as time went the number drastically reduced as they were being hunted for their hides and meat.
It is said that close to 50 million bison were killed in the course of the 19th century. There was even a time when only a couple hundred animals were remaining but efforts to preserve them from going extinct bore fruit and it is not an endangered species anymore.
13 The length of the grass
The grasslands have grasses of varying lengths with others having giant grasses and others having grass midgets. Northern climates feature short grasses that grow to about eight to ten inches. This is because the cold winters and dry summers do not give them favourable conditions to grow tall. On the other hand, southern climates have tall grasses that grow up to seven feet tall. This means that a big animal like an elephant can hide in the grass.
14 The length of the grass in a grassland can determine the variety of animals inhabiting it

Different animals inhabit the grasslands and the type of animals found in the grasslands is heavily influenced by the climate of the grasslands. Since the climate determines how long the grass grows in a certain climate, it is easy to know which animals inhabit the grasslands by looking at the grass. For instance, pronghorn antelopes are mostly found in the northern climate where there is no tall grass as it allows them to know if there is a predator coming.
15 Grasslands are the least protected ecosystem
The grassland ecosystem is one of the ecosystems that little has been done to protect from being completely destroyed and yet it serves so many functions. Globally, only about 8% of the grasslands are protected which is very little considering that grasslands cover a quarter of the earth’s land. Grasslands are essential in ensuring that there is a transition between deserts and forests and if it is not protected the balance is disturbed.
16 Restoration efforts in the United States
The need to restore the grassland biome has been acknowledged in the United States. By putting grasses where crops once grew, efforts are being made to turn farmland back into grasslands. Although the procedure is cautious and slow, it appears to be effective. Natural species are once more being supported by the converted fields, which will eventually aid in the restoration of the natural environment in the restored areas.
17 Plant diversity in grasslands

Grass, wildflowers, herbs, and tiny shrubs are just a few of the many plant species that can be found in grasslands. Since many grassland plants have evolved to the habitat’s dry circumstances, they may live and even thrive in the absence of water.
18 Importance of grasslands
The grasslands are critical to the world’s ecosystem and this is because they play important roles in it. Grasslands contribute to the world’s carbon cycle and in doing so promote biodiversity. The components that make up the grassland are also a source of fuel and food and thus serve the human population well.
19 Insects in grasslands

There are also insects in the grassland ecosystem and they are critical to supporting life there. This is because they are pollinators and thus ensure that the plant life in the grasslands continues. The insects are also decomposers and food for other animals. This goes to show that they are an important part of the ecosystem. Some of the insects found here include beetles, butterflies and grasshoppers.
20 Birds in grasslands
There are different species of birds that call the grasslands home. The birds found in this ecosystem have defining and specific features that allow them to survive in that particular environment. Some of the birds found in this ecosystem include sparrows, eagles, meadowlarks and hawks.
