The Bowling Green, Ohio couple Dorothy and Ernest Hamilton adopted the men’s figure skater gold medalist from the 1984 Olympic Games when he was just 6 weeks old.

His mother was a grade school teacher who eventually was an associate professor at Bowling Green State University, and his adoptive father was a professor of biology there. He is the eldest biological child of the Hamiltons and has an older sister named Susan as well as a younger adopted sibling.
