The Lose Yourself hitmaker broke the race barrier by excelling in a genre dominated by Black people. In an interview with XXL magazine in September 2022, the Detroit rap legend admitted that he was hurt by white rapper criticism during his early career years.

Em’s words in an XXL magazine interview, “When things started happening for me, I was getting a lot of heat, being a white rapper. But it hurt because I felt they didn’t know me to make that kind of judgment. Coming up, I had to deal with that a lot. I wanted to be respectful because what I do is Black music. I knew I was coming into it as a guest in the house. I understood, at the same time, everybody’s perception of a white guy coming into Hip Hop, and all of a sudden things start happening for him.”

Over the years Em has stood out as a white rapper with influence topping charts with his hit songs. He has also received international acclaim through his compositions. From Stan, The Way I Am, Criminal, Sing for the Moment, Not Afraid, Kill You, Rap God and more songs celebrate the rap icon.

2. Beastie Boys

This white rap band shuttered the barrier of skin color and rose to stardom with their cutting-edge hip-hop sound. Their strength in blending the hip-hop style with other genres like punk rock and funk was another break of barriers. The first members were Michael Diamond (Mike D), Adam Yauch (MCA), Adam Horovitz, John Berry, and Kate Schellenbach.

They started as The Young Aborigines in 1979 but later became the Beastie Boys in 1981. In 1985, they toured with Madonna which gained them popularity. The following year they released their first album Licensed to Ill (1986). It was a commercial success.

5. R.A. the Rugged Man

The Rugged Man has exceptional lyrical skills which he combines with storytelling to bring out his rough, rugged, and raw stories. This has defied the barrier of simple narratives in the hip-hop genre.

To add on, rising to the crème de la crème of hip hop as a white rapper had its share of challenges on his identity and race. A barrier he has overcome by becoming a household name in the rap game. He revealed his race battles on an April 30, 2013 interview with Unkut.com.

The Rugged Man words in an Unkut.com interview,  “So when I first signed to Jive, and when Def Jam wanted to sign me, they all wanted to do it where nobody knew I was a white boy. They wanted me to keep the hood on my corner because they knew I was respected amongst black folks. There was just radio, there were no YouTube clips, so everybody knew R.A. The Rugged Man, the name. But they didn’t know the face. So they said let’s not show your face on the single or the album cover. We did a promo where they reversed the picture so when they showed my face it was shown in negative.”

This rap celebrity started his music career when he was about 12 years. When he was 18 years he got signed to the Jive Records label. He has worked under other labels such as Capitol Records, Nature Sounds, Ingrooves, and a few more.
