10 Things To Know About Alice In Chain’s Singer

Alice in Chains is an influential American rock band that emerged from the Seattle music scene in the late 80s. Known for their unique blend of grunge, alternative rock, and heavy metal, the band has had a significant impact on the music industry and is considered one of the pioneering groups of the grunge movement.

Alice in Chains was successful because of their distinctive sound that was characterized by heavy guitar riffs, haunting melodies, dark lyrics, and the distinctive vocal harmonies between their lead vocalist the late Layne Staley, and the guitarist Jerry Cantrell. What was unique about them was the fact that their roots lay in heavy metal, not punk.

Layne Staley, the lead vocalist of the rock band, had powerful and emotive vocals but struggled with addiction which became increasingly severe and eventually led to his tragic death. Here are 10 things to know about Alice In Chain’s singer Layne Staley.

Born Layne Rutherford Staley in August 1967 in Bellevue, Washington, to his parents Phil and Nancy Staley, Layne had an interest in music from a very young age, joining a rhythm band before he joined pre-school. Phil and Nancy’s marriage ended when the boy was 7 years old and he was raised by his mum who later got married again.

Layne didn’t like being called Rutherford, and he legally changed his name to Layne Thomas Staley.

2. Layne Was A Talented Drummer

Layne Staley was not only a talented vocalist but also a capable drummer. When growing up, before his 10th birthday, he was very sure that he wanted to be a singer. His passion for music was influenced by a variety of genres, but he was drawn to heavy metal and hard rock.

He started by playing drums as part of a high-schoolers band called Sleze when he was a teenager. He was very good at the drums but his main interest was singing.

Layne and Jerry became instant friends, thanks to their interest in music. The two founded Alice in Chains in the late 1980s. They formed a strong songwriting partnership, then they harmonized their vocals and that became the signature sound of the band.

Before settling on the name Alice in Chains, the band was briefly known as Alice ‘N Chains, which was a play on words and a combination of the names Alice Cooper and Guns N’ Roses, which were Staley’s favorite bands.

Alice in Chains went through various lineup changes before the final team that had Staley as lead vocalist, Cantrell on guitar and backup vocals, Mike Starr on bass, and Sean Kinney on drums.

4. He Was An Artist Too

Staley was not only a talented musician but also an accomplished artist who created various drawings and paintings. He designed the band’s original logo, which featured their name intertwined with a skull.

While his artistic works were not widely known or publicized as his musical contributions, his drawings and paintings provided him with another avenue for self-expression and allowed him to explore his creativity beyond the realm of music.

Layne Staley was a vegetarian. He adopted a vegetarian lifestyle, abstaining from consuming meat. He was also an animal rights advocate and his decision to follow a vegetarian diet reflected his personal beliefs and his commitment to promoting a cruelty-free and compassionate approach to living.

Staley loved and cared for animals, especially cats and dogs. He owned several pet dogs throughout his life, his last being a cat which Jerry took in after the singer passed on. The singer also feared flying and preferred to travel by road. He was vocal about his support of LGBTQ rights and belief in equality for all.

6. He Struggled With Addiction And Even Went To Rehab

Layne used heroin, cocaine, and other substances which he became addicted to. He made several attempts to seek help through rehab programs throughout his life. This singer experienced periods of sobriety but also suffered from relapses, a sad addiction-recovery cycle.

Sadly, despite his efforts and the support he received, he was unable to overcome his addiction. Many of Staley’s lyrics reflected his personal struggles, including addiction, loneliness, and depression.

Towards the end of 1996, Demri Lara Parrott, who had been Layne’s fiancée died of a drug overdose. This death shook him to the core, taking it so badly that he was placed on a 24-hour suicide watch.

He got into a deep depression, withdrawing from the society and his friends. Meanwhile, the addiction intensified while he isolated himself from the outside world. This isolation made it more difficult for him to maintain connections with loved ones and seek the support necessary for his recovery.

His physical and mental health declined and this ultimately contributed to his untimely death.

8. The Band Went Through Challenges

The band faced multiple challenges due to drug addiction. In 1996, Mike Starr left the band due to personal struggles, and he was replaced by Mike Inez.

Tragically, Layne Staley passed away in 2002 due to a drug overdose, leading to a lengthy break for the band.

Another singer who overdosed was Amy Winehouse.

The last person to see him was his bandmate bassist Mike Starr who regretted not calling 911 to save his friend. Mike died of a drug overdose in 2011.
