10 Things That Make Tiger Sharks So Unique

There are dangerous animals in every habitat including eagles in the air, lions on the land, and tiger sharks in the sea. Tiger sharks are top predators that possess unique features that distinguish them from the rest of sea mammals. Tiger sharks, scientifically referred to as Galeocerdo Cuvier are arguably some of the most dangerous creatures in the sea and ocean that are linked to be food oriented as they can eat anything that is found in water. Beginning from the ability to identify them easily because of their distinctive dark marks to their huge bodies, tiger sharks are fascinating sea mammals that have ever lived. However, their uniqueness is not just about their appearance. These mammals are known to have superhero hunting skills in the sea because of their flexibility and ability to swim fast. They can see clearly in dirty water and in dim lights which helps them to see their prayer at any time of the day. Tiger sharks have an unmatched appetite that makes them greedy as they can eat anything including plastics, tree twigs, tires, and anything that floats in the sea. Don’t forget their adaptability as they can survive in shallow and deeper waters. A good sense of smell is another feature that makes these creatures deadly under the sea as they can smell prey from miles away.

The following are some of the 10 things that make tiger sharks so unique:

1. Tiger Sharks are Built to Eat anything that they Come Across in the Water

Tiger sharks are dangerous predators in the sea because they will eat whatever is ahead of them. Despite having preferred food, these creatures have an insatiable appetite that makes them eat anything from natural food to their offspring. They are sometimes called ocean dustbins because they consume every trash that is thrown in their habitats. Tiger sharks consume remains of animals and humans that are dumped in water and researchers have found human parts that were eaten and thrown on the shores by tiger sharks. It is important to keep the oceans clean from plastics because they can be introduced into the food chain by tiger sharks.

2. Female Tiger Sharks Give Birth to Babies Who Develop Inside the Eggs

Tiger sharks have a unique way of giving birth to offspring. Female sharks, unlike other animals, do not develop a placenta to feed the babies before birth. However, the babies develop inside the eggs of the female tiger shark. The babies hatch after fully developing and eventually are let out to the world. These live offspring are at a high risk of being killed by their parents and therefore have to fend for themselves.

3. Tiger Sharks Are Some of the Heaviest Mammals on the Planet

We all know the heaviest sea mammals, the blue whales, which weigh hundreds of tons. The tiger sharks are also relatively heavy mammals. Weighing almost two thousand pounds, the tiger sharks are the second largest predator sharks in the world. Their weight places them as the fourth largest sharks that have ever existed in the world.

4. Tiger Sharks are one of the Notorious Human Eaters in water

Tiger sharks are reported to be among the shark species that attack and feast on human flesh. One man named Dylan McWilliams is one of the people that fell prey to the tiger shark in 2018. Although the victim survived, the attack was categorized as one of the most fatal attacks by tiger sharks. There are at least three tiger shark attacks in Hawaii in every year and a recorded thirty times in total. However, fatal tiger sharks are rare.

While other sharks and sea mammals prefer staying alive by avoiding disaster, tiger sharks are notorious because they can go through storms to find food. They are built to survive harsh conditions as long as they get something to eat. Scientific research revealed in 2017 about different species of sharks that were tracked in the Pacific. Other types of sharks ran away when they were hit by the storm but tiger sharks stayed put to find food. More tiger sharks were seen joining in the storm where other small fish and sea animals floated dead.

6. Tiger Sharks Can Have as Many as Eighty Babies at One Point

Female tiger sharks can give birth to as many as eighty offspring at once. These are the highest number of offspring that any type of shark can bring at once. However, the large family does not stay united for long as the babies move to shallow waters to survive being killed by their parents. The baby tiger sharks live in shallow rivers and prey on small types of fish and other small water animals. They look for larger water bodies where there is large food when they grow.

7. Tiger Sharks Have Dark Spots which Fade away as the Mammal Grows Older

The term ‘tiger’ evokes the feeling of black stripes running down the animal’s body. Tiger sharks have their bodies covered by dark and gray stripes when they are young. The baby tiger sharks, also referred to as pups begin to change color when they become mature tiger sharks. The colors change from dark spots at a young age to fused stripes as adults. However, the stripes fade away as the mammals grow old and they are barely visible in mature tiger sharks.

8. The Skin of A Tiger Shark is One of the Toughest as it Feels like Sandpaper

While other types of sharks have scales on their bodies, tiger sharks are covered by tough skin with teeth-like structures. The structures on the body reduce friction while the tiger shark swims in water. Scientists have revealed that other sea creatures rub against the tiger shark’s body to remove parasites from their skin.  The tough tiger shark skin is also for surviving in harsh habitats such as warm water.

Tiger sharks are known to love tropical to warm water and they migrate like birds to catch the warm water. When their environment changes and the water begins to cool during winter, the tiger sharks move to tropical regions where there is warm water. They also move during summer to find slightly cool water suitable for their bodies.

10. Tiger Shark Teeth Have a Unique Shape and are Strong

If you could open the mouth of a tiger shark you would see teeth that point sideways. The teeth are placed on the jaw in a mirror-like appearance to make them efficient when cutting through flesh. The teeth are also strong enough to cut through flesh and bone. The saw-like teeth can cut through the hardest skin of their prey and kill them instantly.

Unique features make tiger sharks stand out as special sea predators who can eat anything and service harsh conditions. You would easily identify tiger sharks because of their unique appearance with dark stripes which fade away as the shark grows old. They have massive body sizes which places them among the largest mammals that exist on earth. Tiger sharks are superb swimmers and can survive in a range of habitats which makes them excellent hunters overall. Their special features such as tough skin texture, strong teeth, and swimming skills make tiger sharks the best hunters. The fact that they eat everything they come across helps people to maintain hygiene in the sea and oceans.
