1. Roddick Held The World No. 1 Ranking For A Total Of 13 Weeks

In 2003, Roddick was ranked No. 1 in the world in singles by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) for 13 weeks.  He won the US Open and reached the finals of Wimbledon three times on separate occasions. Roddick was known for his relentless work ethic and constant determination throughout his career which made him excel in his game. He has an unwavering competitive spirit and a never-give-up attitude.

2. He Held The Record For The Fastest Serve

Roddick’s trademark was his powerful and accurate serve, which often left his opponents struggling to return the ball. He used this talent to great effect throughout his career. 

As a player, he held the record for the fastest professional recorded serve in history, clocking up to 155 miles per hour (249.5 km/h). He set the record during a Davis Cup match against Vladimir Voltchkov of Belarus. Roddick was also known for his proficiency at the net, allowing him to execute accurate and powerful volleys that caught his opponents by surprise.

Roddick started playing tennis at a very young age. He won his first tennis tournament as an under-10 junior at the Dunblane Sports Club. He had a losing streak in the juniors and even considered quitting competitive tennis at age 17.

However, his coach convinced him to give tennis four more months of undivided attention. Andy’s undeniable talent and determination won him six world junior singles titles and seven world junior doubles titles. He also won the US Open and Australian Open junior singles titles in 2000 and became the youngest male player to finish the year as the World No. 1 junior. 

4. He Had Frequent Outbursts and Temper Issues On-Court 

Despite being an amazing tennis player, Roddick made frequent outbursts against umpires and linesmen on the court. In 2001 at the US Open, he angrily disputed a ball that landed wide at a crucial point in the fifth set of his quarter-final match. He lost his temper and went on to call the umpire a “moron”.

In a separate incident, he reportedly abused another umpire saying “You’re an idiot! Stay in school, kids, or you’ll end up being an umpire.” Roddick lost his cool again at the 2010 Australian Open when he argued with another umpire after the match. He continued to have other disputes and altercations with different umpires over his tennis career, some of which led to losing matches. 

5. Andy Earned Several Endorsements Over The Years

Roddick landed several endorsement deals with various world-renowned sporting companies. Between 2000 and 2005, he wore Reebok apparel and after his contract expired, he landed a deal with Lacoste. The endorsement deal was worth 25 million dollars and lasted five years.

In 2011, Lacoste introduced to the market the Andy Roddick collection which included track pants, jackets, polos, and tennis shorts. He also became a brand ambassador for Travis Matthew apparel which he wore during matches. 

He landed another endorsement deal with carmaker Lexus, Microsoft Xbox, Sega, Parlux Fragrances, Arizona Beverage Company, and American Express. Roddick has a net worth of approximately $40 million. 

6. He’s Been Friends With The Williams Sisters Since Childhood 

Andy and the Williams sisters have been good friends since they were eight years old. They met at the Rick Macci Tennis Academy and have since maintained a great relationship over the years. He also had the unique privilege to train with the Williams sisters in 1999.

Roddick and the Williams sisters share a manager, Jill Smoller. The friends also attend sporting events together to give each other moral support, a true sign of good friendship.  

7. He Played Basketball In High School

Aside from playing tennis, Roddick developed a keen interest in playing basketball in high school. He decided to sign up for varsity basketball and played alongside David Cup teammate Mardy Fishin. They trained together and became roommates in 1999. 

Roddrick’s hobbies include watching movies- Shawshank Redemption is his favorite. He also loves listening to music, with his favorites including John Mayer and Dave Matthews.  

8. His Brothers Were Promising Tennis Players 

Andy has two older brothers, Lawrence and John. The brothers were both great tennis players, which inspired him to pursue tennis professionally. John Roddick mentored and guided his brother Andy since they were young. John’s career came to an end after he suffered a back injury, opting to pursue a career as a tennis coach. He is the director of tennis at the University of Central Florida and serves as the head coach of the UCF’s tennis team. 

The eldest, Lawrence Roddick, did not pursue a tennis career. He, however, became a chiropractor in San Antonio.  

9. Andy Roddick Is a Family Man

Andy got married to his wife Brooklyn Decker on 17th April 2009 in Austin, Texas. The two met after Roddick first noticed Decker while he was watching a show on the CNN/Sports Illustrated website. He had his agent contact her agent to arrange an initial meet-up after which they started dating in 2007. The couple has two children. 

His wife is an American model and actress who has appeared in television shows such as Ugly Betty, huck, Royal Pains, and The League. Decker has also been featured in films like Just Go with It, What to Expect When You’re Expecting, and Battleship. Her modeling portfolio includes editorials in magazines like Teen Vogue, Cosmopolitan, FHM, Glamour, GQ, Esquire, and Flare. 

10. Andy Retired In 2012 

Roddick announced his retirement from tennis on his 30th birthday and during the 2012 US Open. He had previously suffered multiple injuries, throughout his career such as a hamstring injury, oblique muscle tear, and shoulder pain which sometimes prevented him from playing tennis. At one point he was forced to retire from his match with Lleyton Hewitt because of a hamstring injury at the 2012 Australian Open. 

 Another reason that contributed to his retirement was that the recovery from his injuries took longer than expected. Roddick also wanted to retire so that he could focus on his family and his philanthropic work at the Andy Roddick Foundation.
