The Six Nations Rugby Championship was held recently and for sure it lived upto its expectation of showcasing some of the best rugby players in the world.  The tournament held at the famous Twickenham Stadium, England., attracted so many visitors across the world and also serving as a major economic booster for the host nation. It did not dissapoint for those seeking outdoor fan and adventure. Among the teams that participated in this prestigiousi event included France, Ireland, England, and Scotland.  Ireland were declared the eventual winners of the 2023 Six Nations Championships.

1. The Six Nations Championship Started Off As The Home Nations Championship

1883 is the time the first Home Nations Championship was played .. Five matches were played between 16 December 1882 and 3 March 1883.  The participants in this inaugral tournament were England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. During this tournament five matches were played between 16 December 1882 and 3 March 1883 with England becoming the first winners after beating the other three nations.

2. The Six Nations Is Held Every Year

The 2023 Six Nations Rugby championships was the 24th edition since inception and is usually one of the most prestigious and anticipated rugby tournaments every year. Rugby fans and players are always looking forward to meet and have fun as the teams fight it out for the ultimate prize.  It is sometimes referred to as the Guinness Six Nations because of the main sponsors of the event.

3. England has won the most championships

Since its inception, England has won the most six nation titles. They have won seven titles overall, lifting the trophy for the first time in 2000, then again in 2003, 2011, 2016, 2017 and 2020. Wales follows closely with six wins, lifting the trophy in 2005, 2008, 2012, 2013, 2019 and 2021.

4. Six Nations Rugby Championship Is Always Played In March

The Six Nations tournament has a tradition of being played  in March. The reasons advanced include; March is the time when the weather is cool in Europe, allowing for a good time for outdoor sports like rugby.  Secondly, Rugby is played by many countries and with other tournaments, march has been identified as period when many teams are available to play, and the Six Nations can be scheduled without conflicting with other major rugby events.

5. The Millennium Trophy is awarded to the winner of the match between England and Ireland

Apart from the main trophy of the championship, the competion has always had an additional trophy that is awarded to the winner of the annual Six Nations rugby union match between England and Ireland. This trophy was introduced in 1988 to commemorate the centenary of the founding of the Irish Rugby Football Union and is named after the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Wales, where the first match between England and Ireland was played.

6. There Are Other Trophies And Awards Presented In This Tournament

The Calcutta Cup, the Giuseppe Garibaldi Trophy, the Centenary Quaich, and other trophies and honors are handed throughout the Six Nations Championship in addition to the Millennium Trophy. The Calcutta Cup is given to the victor of the England vs. Scotland match, the Giuseppe Garibaldi Trophy (awarded to the winner of the France vs Italy match), and the Centenary Quaich (awarded to the man of the match in the Scotland vs Ireland match).

7. Wales Are The Record Holders For The Most Grand Slams In Six Nations History

Wales has won the Six Nations with a Grand Slam 12 times, setting a record for most Grand Slams in the tournament’s history. With 13 Grand Slam victories, England is second on the record, ahead of France (with nine) and Ireland (with three). Italy has not yet won a Grand Slam or a Six Nations Championship.

8. The Six Nations Has A Significant Impact On The Economy And Tourism Of The Host Nations

In addition to being one of the important events on the rugby union calendar, the Six Nations Championship has had an immense positive effect on the economies and tourism of the host countries. The event is a known to attract a sizable number of tourists from all over the world, who spend money on lodging, travel, meals, and other local businesses while they are there. This is the main reason why countries are always fighting to host the tournament.

From the records, for example, the host countries, England, France, Ireland, Italy, Scotland, and Wales, earned an estimated €405 million from the 2015 Six Nations Championship, according to a report by Ernst & Young.

As has been reported before, the Six Nations Championship  attracts visitors from all over the world for who come to watch the game and also other outdoor activities. It then follows that it will have huge numbers of people both local and international tourists. From the records, for example, the 2019 tournament witnesseda total attendance of over 1 million spectators. 

Besides live spectators, the tournament  also attracts a large television audience, with millions of viewers tuning in to watch the matches live or on delayed broadcasts.

10. The Trophy Is A Product Of The Renowned Upscale Jewelry and Silverware Company, Asprey

The coveted Six Nations trophy is made of sterling silver and was created by the renowned upscale jewelry and silverware company Asprey of London. It weighs about 7.5kg and is 38 inches tall. On top of it you will see rugby ball and is shaped like a cup with a cover and two handles. The base of the trophy, which is constructed of black marble, bears the names of the winning teams.
