1. Antonio Puerta

We begin our list by paying tribute to the talented Antonio Puerta. Antonio Puerta, a talented Spanish footballer who played as a left-back for Sevilla, died of a heart attack on August 28, 2007, at the age of 22.

Puerta collapsed on the pitch during a match against Getafe and was immediately attended to by medical personnel. He was able to walk off the field, but collapsed again in the locker room and had to be taken to the hospital.

Puerta’s condition quickly deteriorated, despite initial reports that he was in stable condition, and he died three days later from multiple organ failure caused by the heart attack.

Puerta’s death shocked the football world, and he was mourned by many. The football world lost a very young promising talent in a sudden way.

2. Davide Astori

Another late-career great player on our list is the great Italian Davide Astori. Davide Astori, a 31-year-old Italian footballer who played as a center-back for Fiorentina, died of a heart attack on March 4, 2018.

Astori was in Udine with his team, preparing for a Serie A match against Udinese, when a teammate discovered him dead in his hotel room. The news of his untimely death shocked the football world, and all other Serie A games that day were immediately postponed in his honor.

The autopsy revealed that Astori died of a cardiac arrest caused by an undiagnosed genetic heart condition that caused a blockage in one of his coronary arteries. Astori’s death was a tragic loss for the football community, and he was remembered as a respected and talented player with a bright future ahead of him.

3. Miklós Fehér

A good football fan from those early days will know about this late sensation striker. He was regarded as one of the best strikers in the game. Miklós Fehér, a Hungarian footballer who played as a striker for several teams including Benfica, died of a heart attack on January 25, 2004, during a game against Vitória de Guimares in Portugal.

Fehér collapsed on the field in the 62nd minute of the game, and despite the efforts of medical personnel and teammates, he was unable to be revived and died shortly afterward at the hospital.

The cause of his heart attack was determined to be a previously undetected cardiac condition. He was a talented and passionate player with a promising future.

4. Marc-Vivien Foé

This is the case of Marc-Vivien Foé, a Cameroonian footballer who played as a midfielder for several teams, including Manchester City, who died on June 26, 2003, from a heart attack during a game between Cameroon and Colombia in France during the FIFA Confederations Cup.

Foé collapsed on the field in the 72nd minute of the game, and despite the efforts of medical personnel and teammates, he was unable to be revived and died shortly afterward at the hospital.

The cause of his heart attack was determined to be a previously undetected cardiac condition. Foé’s death shocked the football world once more, and he was mourned.

5. Dani Jarque

Dani Jarque, a Spanish footballer who played as a center-back for Espanyol, died of a heart attack while on pre-season training with his team in Italy on August 8, 2009.

Jarque was in his hotel room when he suffered a heart attack and collapsed, and he was pronounced dead shortly after. The cause of his heart attack was determined to be a previously undetected cardiac condition.

6. Piermario Morosini

He was a professional footballer from Italy who played as a midfielder. On 14 April 2012, during a match between Pescara and Livorno, Morosini died on the pitch from cardiac arrest.

While representing Livorno, Morosini suffered cardiac arrest and fell to the ground in the 31st minute of the Serie B match away from Pescara.  He stumbled on the ground, attempting to get up, before losing consciousness and being treated on the field. 

 Morosini, who was conscious when he was placed on the stretcher, was treated with a defibrillator. After Morosini was taken to the hospital, the match was abandoned with Livorno leading 2-0, and some players reportedly “left the field in tears”. Morosini was rushed to the Santo Spirito hospital, but later reports revealed he died before reaching the hospital.

7. Cheick Tioté

Ivorian midfielder Cheick Tioté died on June 5, 2017, after collapsing during a training session with his Chinese club Beijing Enterprises.

Tioté allegedly collapsed during training and was rushed to a nearby hospital. Despite receiving medical care, he tragically died a few hours later.

His death was later determined to be the result of a sudden cardiac arrest, which can occur as a result of a variety of underlying heart conditions, such as arrhythmias or heart muscle problems.

8. Patrick Ekeng

On May 6, 2016, the Cameroonian midfielder died during a football match between his club Dinamo Bucharest and Viitorul Constanta in Romania.

Ekeng entered the game as a substitute in the 62nd minute but collapsed on the field just seven minutes later. He has rushed to the hospital right away, but he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving.

His death was later determined to be the result of a cardiac arrest, which was caused by an existing heart condition. The event was unexpected, and the football world mourned the loss of the talented player.

9. Fernando Ricksen

On September 18, 2019, the Dutch defender died after a long battle with motor neuron disease (MND), also known as ALS. Ricksen was diagnosed with the disease in 2013, which is a progressive and incurable neurological condition affecting the motor neurons that control voluntary muscles.

Ricksen remained active and involved in football despite his diagnosis, raising awareness about MND and supporting various charities. However, his health gradually declined, and he was eventually confined to a wheelchair and required round-the-clock medical care.

Ricksen suffered from heart failure in the final stages of his illness, which contributed to his death. He died at the age of 43, leaving behind a legacy as a fierce competitor and a fierce competitor and champion on the pitch.

10. Ray Jones

The QPR (Queens Park Rangers) striker, died on August 25, 2007, in a car accident. The accident happened on London’s North Circular Road and was caused by a heart attack Jones had while driving.
