The air in the troposphere is colder when is far from Earth and warmer when is closer to Earth. This is because the gravity attraction between the Earth and air molecules is greater for molecules that are close to Earth while those far from Earth have more weight dragging them closer hence increasing the pressure. This simply means that, when you are high in the atmosphere the air pressure decreases.

Since the troposphere is heated through radiation energy from the surface, the temperature usually declines with an increase in altitude in the troposphere thus, the lowest part of the troposphere is a warmer section compared to the higher part.
