Castrato singers were men who had been castrated before puberty to preserve their high-pitched voices. The church at the time had prohibited women from singing in choirs so these boy voices sang the female parts. They were highly prized in Europe from the 16th to the 18th centuries, and many castrato singers became famous for their extraordinary vocal abilities.  

Castrato singers played a vital role in the development of opera and would often feature in the lead roles. They were trained in music conservatories, where they received a rigorous education in singing and acting. Even though their lives were often complex and difficult, Castrati were highly prized and could demand very high fees for their services. For this reason, children born in poverty were castrated by their parents to try and improve their chances of a better life but sadly not all of them succeeded in this career.

1. Farinelli (1705 – 1782)

Born Carlo Broschi in Andria in the Kingdom of Naples, Farinelli was an Italian castrato singer of the 18th century and one of the greatest singers in the history of opera. He was castrated at the age of 6 years and was known for his incredible vocal range, his amazing breath control, and his ability to sing with great power and beauty. 

Farinelli’s extraordinary vocal talent and strikingly pure, high-pitched voice made him a sensation in the world of opera. He was renowned for his virtuosic performances and was known to have been a favorite of many European courts. 

Farinelli’s life and career have been the subject of many books, films, and operas. He is mostly portrayed as a womanizer and a truly fascinating and iconic figure in the world of music. 

2. Baldassare Ferri (1610 – 1680)

Baldassare Ferri (1610-1680) was an Italian castrato singer. He is one of the greatest castrato singers of all time, and he was a major figure in the development of opera in the 17th century. Though Ferri’s castration was a painful and dangerous procedure, he became a gifted actor and a master of stagecraft.

3. Caffarelli (1710 – 1783)

Gaetano Majorano, known by his stage name Caffarelli, was an Italian castrato singer who was born in Bitonto, Italy. He was castrated at the age of 12 and began his musical studies in Naples but soon moved to Rome. Caffarelli quickly became one of the most popular and sought-after singers in Europe, and he performed in major cities throughout Italy, France, and Germany.

As a castrato, he was known for his incredible vocal range, his amazing breath control, and his ability to sing with great power and beauty. As much as he was good in his trade, he was also controversial. Caffarelli was unpredictable and temperamental, both on and off stage.

He fought under little provocation, and this led to spells of house arrest and imprisonment for assault and for misconduct during performances. Despite his flaws, Caffarelli was also a generous and kind-hearted man. He was known for his support of young singers, and he was often willing to help those in need. 

4. Nicolino (1673 – 1732)

Nicola Grimaldi, popularly known as Nicolino, was a prominent Italian castrato singer of the late 17th and early 18th centuries. He was celebrated for his versatility as a singer. He excelled in both soprano and alto roles and was known for his ability to perform both intense arias and virtuosic coloratura sections.

Having been castrated at the age of 11, he made his operatic debut in Venice in 1707 and his exceptional singing talent quickly gained recognition.  

Senesino’s fame extended beyond Italy and England, performing in various European cities, including Dresden, Vienna, and Barcelona. His vocal artistry and dramatic abilities made him a sensation wherever he sang. 

6. Antonio Bernacchi (1685-1756)

Born in Bologna, Italy, Antonio Bernacchi was one of the most celebrated castrato singers of the early 18th century. He was known for his exquisite vocal technique and his ability to interpret a wide range of roles thanks to being a skilled actor.

Having studied singing, Bernacchi made his opera appearance in Genoa, before moving his act to the rest of Europe, appearing in operas. He was particularly admired for his agility, his legato singing, and his ability to control his breath. 

7. Carestini (1705-1760)

Born Giacinto Fontana, Carestini was an Italian castrato of the 18th century, who sang in the operas. He became one of the most popular castrati in Europe and was known for his beautiful, agile voice, his expressive acting, and his flamboyant stage presence. 

Farinelli left the stage and retired from performing when his vocals started declining. There were also changes in the opera scene. He spent his later years in Spain, where he became a court musician for King Philip V and his successor Ferdinand VI. Farinelli’s presence in the Spanish court was said to have a calming and therapeutic effect on the mentally unstable King Philip V, and it is rumored that he sang to the king to alleviate his mood swings.

8. Luigi Marchesi (1754-1829)

Luigi Marchesi, whose stage was Marchesini, was an Italian castrato singer who was one of the most famous and admired singers of his day. Apart from his beautiful singing and stage presence, this guy was also a music composer. 

Marchesi was born in Milan, Italy, and began his musical training as a violinist, but soon switched to singing. His career spanned a period of significant change in the world of opera because castrati were gradually being replaced by female sopranos and tenors. He adapted to these changes, began to perform alongside female singers, and contributed to the evolving operatic landscape.

9. Valentino Urbani (1690 – Mid 1700s )

Valentino Urbani was an Italian castrato singer who was born in 1690 in Udine, Italy, and was known by the stage name Valentini. He began his musical training as a boy soprano and was castrated at the age of 12. Valentini worked with George Frideric Handel, the famous composer for most of his life.

This opera singer was active until 1722,  but his exact year of death remains unknown. With a  voice that was described as being sweet, clear, and agile, Valentini was a talented actor and was known for his expressive stage presence. He is remembered as one of the greatest castrato singers of all time. 

10. Felice Salimbeni (1712 –1755)

Felice Salimbeni was an Italian castrato singer who was active in the early 18th century. He was born in Milan and began his musical training as a boy soprano. He was castrated at the age of 12 and made his operatic debut in Rome in 1731. From 1733 to 1737 he sang at the court in Dresden. In 1743 he moved to Berlin, where he became the principal castrato at the court of the Prussian king Frederick the Great.

Salimbeni was one of the leading castrato singers of his day, and his performances helped to popularize the castrato as a legitimate and respected form of singing.
