10 Best Tips and Advice for Positive Parenting
A parenting philosophy known as positive parenting makes the assumption that children are good and desirous of doing the right thing from birth. It highlights the value of respecting one another and adopting constructive means of correction. Instead of punishing previous misconduct, positive parenting strategies place an emphasis on teaching children good future behaviour.
Alfred Adler and Rudolf Dreikurs, two Viennese psychiatrists, first introduced positive parenting techniques to Americans in the 1920s. Since then, different positive parenting strategies have been improved upon and supported by programs and parenting specialists all over the world.
Here are 10 tips for becoming a better parent, developing effective parenting techniques, and avoiding poor parenting. Many of them take time and are challenging. No one can likely perform all of these simultaneously but it is worth giving it a try.
1. Walk the talk
The greatest approach to instruct is to demonstrate. Because we can learn through imitation, we are unique as human beings. We have a built-in tendency to mimic, comprehend, and adapt other people’s behaviours. Children in particular closely observe everything their parents do.
Therefore, model the behaviour and attitude you want your child to exhibit by showing them respect, having compassion for their feelings, and acting with positive behaviour, and your child will do the same.
2. Show your love
You can never love your child too much. They cannot be ruined by being loved. Only actions you decide to take (or give) in the name of love have the power to do so; examples include material indulgence, leniency, low expectations, and excessive protection. A pampered child is what you get when you substitute these things for genuine affection.
Hugging, spending time together, eating meals as a family, and paying attention to your child’s problems are all examples of simple ways to show your child you care. Release of feel-good hormones like oxytocin can occur as a result of doing these acts of love. The child will build resilience and a tighter bond with you as a result of these neurochemicals, which can provide us with a profound sense of peace, emotional warmth, and satisfaction.
3. Create a positive experience

It can be challenging to have a positive attitude when it comes to punishment, particularly when dealing with behavioural issues. But it is achievable if you employ constructive punishment rather than severe punishment.
Teaching your child principles about what is right and wrong is an essential part of being a successful parent. The cornerstone of effective discipline is establishing boundaries and maintaining them consistently.
When you establish and uphold regulations, do so with kindness and firmness. Put your attention on the cause of the child’s inappropriate behaviour. And instead of punishing them for the past, give them a chance to learn something constructive for the future. Be receptive to your child’s signals and considerate of their needs to show them that you are there for them at all times.
Encourage and embrace your child for who he or she is. Be a welcoming and secure base for your child to leave from and return to. The emotional regulation, social, and mental health outcomes of kids raised by continuously responding parents tend to be better. ​
5. Communicate with your child
The majority of us already recognize the value of communication. As you converse with your child, be sure to pay close attention to what they have to say. You’ll have a better relationship with your child and they’ll come to you with issues if you keep the lines of communication open.
Communication is necessary for still another reason. You assist your child in integrating their brain, which is an important step in childhood development. Positive discipline is better and has proven to be successful, this is where you teach your children that their actions have consequences that they cannot avoid if they behave inappropriately.
9. Understand your goal while raising your child
What do you hope to achieve by raising a child? If you’re like most parents, you want your child to succeed in school, be successful, responsible and independent, respected, enjoy good connections with you and other people, be loving and compassionate, and lead a happy, healthy, and meaningful life.
However, how much time do you devote to achieving those objectives? If you’re a parent like most others, you probably spend the majority of your time simply attempting to get through the day.
The next time you feel annoyed or furious, take a step back so that the survival mode does not take over your life. Consider the damage that resentment and fury will cause to you or your child.
Instead, think of methods to help them learn from every unpleasant event. If you focus on teaching your child instead of trying to control them, even the most epic tantrums can be transformed into priceless learning opportunities.
10. Don’t ever give up on your child!
With patience, humour, and persistence, all of your child’s issues can be resolved. Even the most difficult teenagers can develop into wonderful adults with the right parental guidance.
It could take some getting used to these suggestions for your family, but if you stick with them, you will see and enjoy the effects. We will get far better results and the whole family will be happier and healthier when we incorporate compassion and kindness into parenting methods.
