The Royal Route is a former communication route that led southward from the city’s Old Town. Now the route comprises a series of connecting Warsaw streets with several historic landmarks.

During summer, the street is closed to drivers becoming a popular and welcoming place to promenade.

1. The Royal Route Connects Three Former home of Polish Rulers

The famous Royal Route links three former royal residences of Polish leaders. It started from Royal Castle on Plac Zamkowy via Lazienki Park’s Palace on the Island, heading to Wilanow Palace.

The route covers a distance of 11 kilometers as it takes you through an incredible range of Warsaw’s historic buildings, churches, monuments and parks. A walk along the route is a must to do once you visit the city of Warsaw.

2. The Royal Route is One of the Poland Historic Monument

The route has many thrilling architectural buildings, such as parks, churches and palaces, which you can see as you walk along it. There are also extensive cafes, restaurants and a range of bars.

The Royal Route became one of Poland’s official national Historic Monuments on September 16, 1994. Its listing is maintained by the National Heritage Board of Poland. 

3. One of the Famous Landmarks on the Route is St. Ann’s Church

St. Ann’s church is a church in the historical center of Warsaw, Poland, adjacent to Castle Square at Krakowskie Przedmiescie 68 along the Royal Route. It’s a notable church with a Neoclassical façade.

The church is one of the oldest buildings in Warsaw and the main church parish of the academic community in Warsaw. Over time the church has been rebuilt, resulting in its current appearance, which has remained unchanged since 1788.

When you visit the Royal Route, visit the church and explore the Neoclassical interior and façade. Also, the church has the only example of a diamond vault preserved in Warsaw; it can be seen in the cloister leading to the vestry.

4. The Royal Route Leads to Royal Castle

The Royal Castle is a royal residence that formerly served as the official home of Polish monarchs throughout the centuries. It is located in castle square, right where the Royal Route starts.

The personal offices of the king and the administrative offices of the royal court were located in the castle from the 16th century until the final partition of Poland in 1795.

Today the castle serves as a museum annually visited by over 500,000 people, and the court has valuable exhibits, paintings and monuments. One of Warsaw’s most recognizable landmarks listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site.

5. The Royal Route Leads to Presidential Palace

Presidential Palace is alongside the Belweder Palace, located in Warsaw, Poland. It was initially built in 1643 as an aristocratic mansion. And served various functions as a place of public gatherings, theatre performances, and balls to the seat of state authority.

The palace was rebuilt and remodeled several times throughout its existence by notable architects. The current neoclassical palace was completed in 1818.

Nowadays, the building is home to Poland’s president. The entrance to the palace is heavily guarded by a statue of Prince Jozef Poniatowski and four stone lions.

The Wilanow Palace is a former royal palace located in the Wilano district of Warsaw. The place survived Poland’s partitions and both World Wars.

The palace was established in 1805 for King John III Sobieski and received around three million visitors annually. It holds cultural events and concerts such as Summer Royal Concerts in the Rose Garden and the International Summer Early Music Academy.

Today the museum serves as a reminder of the culture of the Polish state as it was before the misfortune of the 18th century.

8. It is the Heart of the Route Krakowskie Przedmiescie

Krakowskie Przedmiescie is one of Poland’s best-known and most prestigious streets in Warsaw. The street is surrounded by historic palaces, manor-houses and churches.

 In the 17th century, palaces and manor houses started springing up along what had by then become the major artery of the new Polish capita.

The street constitutes the northernmost part of the Warsaw Royal Route. It links the Old Town and Royal Castle with some of the most notable institutions in Warsaw, such as the Polish Academy of Science and Warsaw University.

The immediate southward extension of Krakowskie Przedmiescie along the Royal route is Ulica Nowy Swiat.

9. The Royal Route Runs South Down to Ulica Nowy Swiat

Ulica Nowy Swiat, known in English as New World Street, is one of the main historic thoroughfares of Warsaw, Poland.

It comprises of Royal Route that extends from Warsaw Royal castle and Old Town south to King John III Sobieski’s 17th-century royal residence at Wilanow. The street’s current name was coined in the 17th century after the city had begun growing substantially.

Today, Nowy Swiat boasts many shops, restaurants and cafés. It is considered to be a prime location for luxury retailers.

10. The Route Connects to Lazienki Park

Lazienki park is the largest park in Warsaw, Poland, occupying an area of 76 hectares in the city center.

The park and palace complex lies in Warsaw’s central district on Ujazdow Avenue, which is part of the Royal Route. The park is visited by tourists from all over Poland and the world and operates as a venue for music, culture and art.
