Susan Diane Wojcicki is a Polish American business executive who stands behind the success of one of the top social media platforms, YouTube.
She was part of the journey that unleashed Google to the world and even became Google’s first marketing manager in 1999.

1. She was the landlady of Googles Creators
Today YouTube is among the top social media platforms across the globe and to reach that height of glory was a journey of decades.
In September 1998, the same month that Google was incorporated, the founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin were led by fate to set up an office in Wojcicki’s parent’s garage in Menlo Park.
The Partners set up a workspace from Susan, who was then working in the marketing department at Intel. In an interview, Wojcicki stated, “I was worried about covering the mortgage, so I was willing to rent my garage to any student “. In 1999, Google shifted from its origin of creation to an actual office in Palo Alto, California
2. She was the 16th employee of Google
When Wojcicki rented her garage space to the founders that would shape the history of one of the most significant social media platforms, all she hoped to receive was her rent at the end of the month, but her destiny weaved another path for her.

YouTube is one of the most used platforms in the social media world and while we have gotten accustomed to it being part of the features of a smartphone, often people don’t dwell on how such a unique app came into existence.
Behind every great invention is a small whisper of an idea, a flake that ignites a motion of creation, and what sparked Susan to initiate her idea, was a simple video of two boys singing.
In 2006, she was overseeing Google’s video and was in charge of its acquisition. YouTube was then a small unprofitable Silicon Valley start-up, but luckily Susan stumbled upon a video of two boys in China lip-syncing to the backstreet boy’s song “As long as you live me.”
Wojcicki found the video amusing and it is this small video that made her realize how content can easily be shared and created from all around the world.
Six months after she stumbled on that video she recommended and subsequently managed the 1.65 billion acquisition of the video-sharing site.
4. She was the brains behind AdSense
In 2003, She became the first product manager of one of Google’s seminal advertising products _Ad sense.
She was the brain that initiated and thought of the idea that would become a multi-million business. AdSense was an extension of a Programme that Google had successfully launched in 2002, called AdWords.
AdWords offered advertisers sponsored search ads, which were little texts that appeared near search results, advertisers had to pay only if the ads get clicked.
The magic idea offered by Wojcicki was, why not offer the same ad all over the web on even blogs and websites, to entice Web “Publishers”.
This was so that they could participate by giving them a portion of the ad revenue, that is to say, every time someone clicks on an ad on your site, you get a check, that was the innovative idea of AdSense.
5.She became the CEO of YouTube in 2014

In February 2014, Susan a long-standing executive advertiser was announced to be the CEO of YouTube.
At the age of 45, Susan replaced Salar Kamangar, who was the senior VP of YouTube and video.
After she became the CEO of YouTube, she took the company to yet another height of success as the site reached 2 billion logged users in a month, and users were watching one billion hours a day by 2021.
She emphasized new YouTube applications and experiences that were made to appeal to users interested in family gaming and music content.

Wojcicki tightened the YouTube policies on videos and which were regarded as potentially piloting its policies on hate speech and violent extremism.
However, these measures were not as effective and this was worsened when the times showed an ad sponsored by the British government and several private sector companies appearing ahead of YouTube videos supporting terrorist groups.
This news made many advertisers withdraw their ads from YouTube in retaliation as their policies were criticized as censorship.
On October 22, 2018, Wojcicki announced that YouTube would directly be liable for copyright content, which poses a threat to content creators’ ability to share their work.
7. She graduated from Harvard university
In the foundation of her success there lies a solid ground of education that’s for sure enabled her to be one of the most impactful women in the tech industry.
At Harvard, she studied history and literature and graduated with honors in 1990, where she planned on getting a Ph.D. in economics but changed her course when she took interest in technology.
8. She has married the director of product management at Google
Wojcicki married Dannis Troper, who is a director at Google for product management for the wearable division company.
They got married on August 23, 1998, in Belmont, California, and the couple was blessed with five children.
9. She has strongly advocated for paid Family leave
The YouTube CEO has strongly advocated for several causes, but the most notable was the expansion of paid family leave.
Shortly after she was promoted to become the CEO of YouTube she took her fifth maternity leave on December 16, 2014, and wrote an Op-ed, in The Wall Street Journal on the importance of maternity leave and finding a balance between family and career.
