The Warsaw Pact was a collective defense treaty established by the Soviet Union and seven other Soviet satellite states in Central and Eastern Europe.The Warsaw Pact, was so because the treaty was signed in Warsaw and was directly governed by Moscow,Russia which sought to exercise tighter control over satellite states. 

It was initially known as the Warsaw Treaty Organization and was composed of a total of eight members including; The Soviet Union and Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Hungary, Poland, and Romania. Let’s take a look at some of the top facts about the Warsaw pact;

1.It was initially called the Warsaw treaty of friendship, cooperation and mutual assistance 

The Warsaw pact was formally called the Warsaw treaty of friendship, cooperation and mutual assistance in May 14, 1955 and its main work was to help each other between the member states in case any of them got attacked and the treaty was also to establish a mutual-defense organization

The treaty could later be given other names like Warsaw Treaty Organization and later the Warsaw Pact which it is commonly referred to in the history books. However none of the countries involved got what they deserved apart from the Soviet Union which had the ideas of strengthening themselves against the likes of USA. 

2.The Warsaw Pact was created to counter the creation of NATO

The Warsaw Pact created to counter NATO, reaction to the integration of West Germany into the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)in 1955 as per the London and 鶹APP Conferences of 1954.Warsaw Pact was also established as a balance of power with the already created NATO.

There was no direct military confrontation between the two organizations and instead, the conflict was only fought on an ideological basis and through proxy wars. Both NATO and the Warsaw Pact led to the expansion of military forces and their integration into the respective blocs.

3.It was created by Soviet Union after their failed attempts to join NATO

The Warsaw pact was created after the Soviet Union saw its requests to join NATO, were rejected severally by the top members of NATO including the UK, US, and French governments. The Soviet Union decided to firm an alliance with those countries who had been left behind by NATO and brought about the creation of the Warsaw Pact. 

The Warsaw pact came to be in an attempt to counter NATO by the Soviet Union who we’re the main beneficially of the pact and because of this the Warsaw pact more so the USSR became a strong force. The NATO even feared the outcome of the creation of Warsaw pact because, the USSR’s record of building weapons.

4.The Warsaw Pact was divided into two folds

The Warsaw Treaty’s organization (Warsaw pact) was divided into two folds namely: the Political Consultative Committee and the combined Command of Pact Armed Forces. The  work of the Political consultative committee was to handle political matters and was to negotiate and deal with all political matters at hand. 

The Combined Command of Pact Armed Forces on the other hand controlled the assigned multi-national forces, with headquarters in Warsaw, Poland.The armed forces were to provide security and deal with any threat which the organization could face.

5.Warsaw Pact provided an assurance of security

During a time when countries were constantly alert to the possibility of another war breaking out, the Warsaw Pact provided an assurance of security. It also helped smaller nations by promising protection, access to weapons, and economic aid should they be in danger of conflict with neighboring rivals.

This pact also allowed the Soviet Union to gain control over the military forces of its members, thus making the Soviet Union too strong to risk the chance of attacking any of its countries. The Pact made soviet union one of the strongest entities in the world then and the other member felt the effect of the pact. 

6.The Warsaw Pact was led by Soviet leaders Nikita Khrushchev and Nikolay Bulganin

The Warsaw Pact was led by Soviet leaders Nikita Khrushchev and Nikolay Bulganin, who upon their assumption of power created a systematic plan to strengthen the Soviet hold over its satellites using the program of the Warsaw pact early in 1955. The Soviet Union was the main beneficially of the treaty or pact. 

The treaty also served as a lever to enhance the bargaining position of the Soviet Union in international diplomacy, making them one of the most sought after entity in the cold war which followed the Warsaw Pact. The Warsaw Pact members more so the Soviet Union became feared. 

7.The Warsaw Pact led to the expansion of military forces

The Warsaw Pact led to the expansion of military forces and their integration into the respective blocs. The Soviet Union and its allies became a force as its military continuing to grow and they also continued making more and more superior weapons with examples such as the Nuclear weapons.

Their military personnel grew so much in number and continued engaging in military operations for the Warsaw pact members. Its largest military engagement was the Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia in August 1968 where all members participated except Albania and Romania. It later resulted to Albania withdrawing from the pact less than one month later.

8.The Warsaw Pact never had a direct conflict of fight with NATO

Though the Warsaw Pact had different ideologies to those if NATO and were in constant exchange of words, they never had a direct conflict of fight with NATO. Instead, proxy wars were fought between the Soviet Union and the United States during the Korean and Vietnam War.

The two sides had developed fear of each other because of the strength of each other and the weapons each of them had build including Nuclear weapons and a such could not go to war with each other. The two also over time, built up their own defenses, by strengthening their weapons and military size. 

9.The creation of the Warsaw Pact led to the start of an arms race

The Warsaw pact which was created counter NATO brought about an arms race with each side on its toes to strengthen its defenses more so its arsenal. Each side tried their best best to out do the other when it comes to creation if superior weapons and a huge army to go with it. 

The arms race lasted for the rest of the cold war because each side continued making weapons and strengthening their nuclear warheads to a point the two infested billions from their budget to increase and build stronger and more sophisticated weapons. The two sides however continued to fear each other.

10. The Warsaw pact was declared moribund in 1991 bring an end to the cold war

After several democratic revolutions in 1989 more so in eastern Europe, the Warsaw Pact became moribund and was formally declared “nonexistent” on July 1, 1991, at a final summit meeting of Warsaw Pact leaders that was held in Prague, Czechoslovakia. The soviet troops who had been deployed in several countries were withdrawn. 

This is also the around the same time USSR broke into several independent countries and the decades-long confrontation between eastern and western Europe was formally rejected by members of the Warsaw Pact, all of which, with the exception of the Soviet successor state of Russia, subsequently joined NATO.This eventually led to the end of of the cold war that had lasted several decades.
