Park Lazienkowski is a huge, historical complex of gardens located in central Warsaw. It lies near Ujazdow Avenue, home to numerous embassies and former palaces. it’s also called Lazienki park or Royal Baths Park.

The park dates to the 17th century.  One of the culturally rich green areas, It was developed by Poland’s last King, Stanislaus Augustus, and it is home to striking landscapes and several architectural treasures.

The architectural treasures in the park includeS; the Myslewicki palace, Old Orangery, New Orangery, water tower, hermitage, invalids’ barracks, Narutowicz’s house, Classical Amphitheatre and stage on Isle, among many more structures.

1. Park Lazienkowski Was Designed in the 17th century

In the 17th century, the park was designed by Tylman van Gameren in the baroque style for military commander Stanislaw Heralkiusz Lubomirski. It was named after a bathing pavilion which was located nearby.

From the 17th century to the 20th century, the garden continued to change its appearance with additional buildings in it gradually. These transformations were executed by Poland’s last monarch Stanislaus II Augustus. Presently, the renovation has been completed in the garden and is open to visitors.

The Amphitheatre Waterworks and the Cadet’s Hall have been restored and recently became home of the Ignacy Jan Paderewski Museum. The historic palace and garden complex performs various cultural functions and is regularly visited by foreigners and domestic people.

2. It is the Largest Park in Warsaw, Poland

Park Lazienkowski is the largest park in Warsaw, Poland. It occupies 76 hectares of the city centre and it operates all year.

The park is visited by tourists from all over Poland and the world and serves as a venue for music, culture and art. Lazienskowski is also home to peacocks and a large number of squirrels.

3. The Museum of Hunting and Horsemanship is Located in the Park

The museum was opened in 1983 and had its first permanent exhibition in 1985. The museum is now part of the Royal Lazienki Museum.

The museum is established in two historic buildings. Its collection has taxidermized animals, mounted antlers, and carriages and saddles.

Museum of Hunting and Horsemanship celebrates hunting tradition and includes artworks and exhibits that feature it.

Every year the museum has hosted an annual competition since 2010 to try to break Maria Zandbang’s horse jumping record.

4. Lazienkowski is Home to The Frederic Chopin Monument

The monument is a large bronze statue standing in the park’s upper part. The statue was designed in 1907 by Waclaw Szymanowski for planned erection on the centenary of Chopin’s 1810 birth but was delayed due to converse over the design.

The monument was finally erected in 1926 but was blown during World War II and was the first Warsaw monument destroyed by occupying Germans.

It was erected again after World War II, and architect Oskar Sosnowski designed the pedestal and basin made of red Wachock sandstone. On Sunday, free piano concerts are held before the monument.

5. Palace on the Isle is the Main Building in the Park

Palace on the Isle is also known as Bath Palace and it’s a classicist palace in the park. It was initially a baroque Bath House built in the 1680s, the most outstanding architect in Poland then.

Stanislaus Augustus took an interest in the old Bath-House in 1772, purchased the estate, and transformed the bathing pavilion into a classicist summer home with an English garden.

The most notable change was in 1777, a storey was added to the building with a sleeping suite for king Stanislaus Augustus. King Stanislaus continued with renovation, turning it into a spectacular building.

The recent renovation of the park was in 2012-2015, which covered the roof as well as all the rooms of the palace, including the Ball Room, in which 17th-century paintings by Jan Bogumil Plersch were unveiled. The palace and the park received an estimated 2.1 million visitors.

6. The Park is Home to the State of King John III Sobieski

A bridge with a monument of King John III Sobieski closes off the view from the north windows of the Lazienki Palace. The bridge was initially a single span with a stone panel. In 1877, the canal was widened and two new spans were added on the east side.

The monument of King John Sobieski was designed by Andre Le Brun, who modelled it on king John Sobieski’s equestrian statue at Wilanow.

The monument shows a rider in knights’ armour astride a rearing steed whose hooves trample two Ottoman Turks. The statue symbolizes Sobieski’s victory over the Turks at the Battle of Vienna in 1683.

7. The Park Little White House

The little white house is a garden villa built from 1774 to 1776 by Domenico. It used to house king Poniatowski’s mistress and, for a time Louis XVIII who lived here during his exile.

It was built in the form of a square, has identical facades, adorned with rustication, an attic and a small pavilion at the top. Its interior was decorated by prominent Polish painters Jan Scislo and Jan Bogumil Plersch.

The little white house was destroyed by German during World War II many of its interior furnishings survived. The most interesting include 18th-century Chinese wallpaper in the parlor, the King’s bed, grotesque paintings in the dining room and a cabinet in the form of an arbor with trompe-l’oeil.

8. There are Guardhouses in the Park

An Old Guardhouse was built for the guards protecting the approach to the palace. It is a modest-sized building that conveys a majestic image and now serves as a venue for temporary exhibitions.

A new Guardhouse is also located near the west side of Palace on the Isle. It came to be through the rebuilding of a little building erected from 1779 to 1780 for the then popular game Trou-Madame.

In 1830 the New Guardhouse was reconstructed in a classicist style by Jakub Kubicki. Nowadays, the building houses a café known under the 18th-century name of Trou-Madame.

9. The park Lazienkowski has an Egyptian Temple

Jakub Kubicki built an Egyptian temple in 1822 on the southwest shore of the southern Lazienki Lake. It was located next to the fortress by Stanislaw Lubomirski, which protected Warsaw south of that point.

 A bridge was built to it in 1771. During the Warsaw Uprising, only the northern part of the temple survived and the southern was never built. The Museum of Scouting is currently located in the temple.

10. The Temple of Diana

Jakub Kubicki built a classicist temple for the goddess Diana. The temple is also known as the Temple of the Sibyl, and it is situated next to the northwest part of southern Lazienki Lake.

The temple is a wooden building decorated inside with murals with flower and fruit motifs.
