10 Most Famous Polish Writers of All Time
Writers often use their words and different styles to bring out concepts to the readers. Writers may produce different literary art and works such as, books, poetry, plays, screenplays, teleplays, songs, essays, novels and short stories.
Writers often use their skills to express ideas of their readers. There are several polish writers who have been seen to stand out from the rest in their work. Some of their work is still lifelong even after their death.
1.Tadeusz Różewicz
Tadeusz Różewicz was known for his poetry, short stories, and plays. He has published up to 15 volumes of poetry during his career. His poetry was minimalist in style and content. His works have been translated into nearly all major languages of the world.
He has received several awards for his works over the years. He has received nominations for the Nobel Prize in Literature. Other than this nomination, he won the Nike Award, the top literature in Poland.
2.Wislawa Szymborska
Wislawa Szymborska was known as a Polish poet, essayist, translator and recipient of the Nobel Prize in 1996. Her biography has currently over 90 language translations. She received the award in1996 for her poetry as it had an ironic precision that allowed for historic and biological context to come to light.
Szymborska died peacefully surrounded by friends and family. She died from Lung cancer at the age of 88. Later on, in 2013, the Wislawa Szymborska Award was established in her honour
3.Henryk Sienkiewicz
Henryk was a polish writer, novelist and journalist. He is best remembered for his best-seller, Quo Vadis. The novel narrates the love story between a young Christian and a Roman patrician. He studied the Roman Empire before writing the novel.
Henryk`s popularity and fame grew over the years both in Poland and beyond. His works were also prominent in Germany, Russia and France. His trilogy of historical novels, including With Fire and Sword, The Deluge, and Sir Michael, set him apart.
4.Adam Mickiewicz
Adam is believed to be one of the greatest poets of Poland and an apostle of polish national freedom. His work has been translated into 90 languages.
He is majorly known for his poetic drama, Forefathers. The poem has been regarded as a supreme realization of romantic drama theory. The ancient poem commemorates the dead. The first three parts of the poem were influenced by Gothic fiction.
Adam`s prominence goes beyond poetry, he is also known for his activism, culture and politics. He pushed for Polish national freedom throughout his life and was arrested and deported to Russia for his patriotic activities.
5.Czeslaw Milosz
Czeslaw Milosz was known for his poetry, prose writing, translation and diplomatic work. He was also known for his activism. During World War II, he survived the war and became a culture attaché for the Polish government.
The Captive Mind is his work of prose. The work was written as soon as he defected from Stalinist Poland. He drew upon his experience as an illegal writer. The book explains the allure to intellectuals. After surviving the war he moved to the United States and became a professor.
6. Marek Krajewski
Marek Krajewski is known as crime writer and linguist. His novels have been translated into 18 different languages. He has won numerous awards including the Georg Dehio Book Prize and Medal for the Merit to culture.
He studied classics at the University of Wroclaw and later on proceeded to get a doctorate degree. He was thereafter employed as a librarian and later on an assistant professor. During all this, his main agenda was to pursue his professional career as a writer.
7.Stanislaw Lem
Stanislaw Lem was known to be a prominent science-fiction polish writer. He was born in Poland to a Jewish family. He took up medicine in collage but drooped out to put more focus on his passion, writing. As Lem was working as a scientific researcher he published several short stories, poems and reviews.
He has written several books that have been translated into 35 different languages. In 1986, he wrote his first book titled the man from mars. The book narrates how an American scientist is trying to deal with a creature in a crashed spaceship from Mars.
This book gained publicity and was serialized in a polish magazine. Lem has received many awards for his works over the years. He was only married once until his death
8.Witold Gombrowicz
Witold Gombrowicz is known as a polish writer and playwright. In the year 1966, he was nominated for the Nobel Prize. His first novel, Ferdydurke, was a critical look at Polish society and culture.
This novel is believed to be the first controversial novel. The book was described as a cult novel. Many of his works were banned in Poland because of their content.
Before his fame, Witold had opted not to publish some of his works in Poland while a ban had been placed on some of his books. He had a breakthrough in 1970 when his works now started to gain some publicity.
9.Bruno Schulz
Bruno Schulz was a Polish Jewish author, fine artist, literary critic and art teacher. He was awarded the Polish Academy of Literatures’ prestigious Golden Laurel award. He is often considered one of the top Polish language prose writers of the 20th century.
He wrote Sanatorium Under the Sign of the Hourglass and The Street of Crocodiles, among other works. During Nazi Rule, most of his work was lost. He drew inspiration from local and ethical sources.
10.Olga Tokarczuk
Olga Tokarczuk is known for being a famous Polish activist, writer and public intellectual. She is regarded as one of the most successful writers of her generation in Poland. She earned the 2018 Nobel Prize in Literature and was one of the first female Polish writers.
Her novel Flights earned the 2018 Man Booker International Prize as well. The book refers to runaways who believe that being in constant motion would avoid evil. The book is based on some fiction and facts.
Some of her works include, Primeval and Other Times, Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead and the Books Of Jacob.
