Ruth went to what is now Framingham State College to finish her studies. There, she pursued a career as a dietitian and a food instructor. Her graduation was in 1924.

2. Ruth was married two years after graduating from college

Ruth and her husband purchased the Tollhouse Inn, a vacation resort. They gave it this name because it was situated along the route of the formerly toll-free highway connecting Boston and New Bedford.

With the use of some of her grandmother’s old recipes as well as some of her own, Ruth prepared meals for the visitors that were a hit and expanded the inn’s dining area from seven tables to sixty.

According to a myth, Wakefield created the biscuit accidentally and thought the melting chocolate bits would result in chocolate cookies. However, Wakefield claimed to have created the cookie on purpose. She said in an interview that she had been serving ice cream with a thin butterscotch nut biscuit.

She added that although everyone seemed to enjoy it, she was attempting to offer them something different. That is the reason why she created the Toll House cookie.

She embellished a biscuit with finely chopped pieces from a Nestlé semi-sweet chocolate bar. “Toll House Chocolate Crunch Cookies” is the name of the original recipe in Toll House Tried and True Recipes. In exchange for sharing her cookie recipe with Nestle, Wakefield received a lifetime supply of chocolate from the business.

During World War II in 1940, the Toll House Cookies gained popularity. The cooking helper Ruth’s daughter recalled spending days in the kitchen preparing care packages for the Massachusetts soldiers serving overseas.
