Where to Eat the Best Hotdogs in Pittsburgh

The Original Hot Dog Shop in  Pittsburgh was founded by Syd & Moe Simon. The operation started in the shadows of Forbes Field during the Pittsburgh Pirates’ unforgettable, 1960 World Series Championship season.

It was thought, “where would a better place be than outside of a ballpark to open a hot dog and burger stand?”

Over the years the small store originally named “House of Beef” and “Franks & Burgers” later renamed “The Original Hot Dog Shop” has received national and international acclaim.

The Original Hot dog Shop has been shown on various television programs such as The Food Network’s “Unwrapped”, and The PBS Special “A Hot Dog Program” not to mention several other magazines and newspaper articles.

Over the last 60 years, the Oakland community of Pittsburgh has experienced a vast transformation being home to many of the region’s leading universities and hospitals.

The Original Hot Dog Shop is therefore dedicated to Syd’s wife Essie and has an incredible history to match the development of such a special neighborhood.

While everyone’s debating whether or not a hot dog is a sandwich, in Pittsburgh, the locals actually enjoy them. They range from no-frills hidden gems to ones covered in an obscene amount of toppings.

1. First Watch

First Watch specializes in delicious creations freshly prepared to order.

They begin their mornings by slicing fresh fruits and vegetables, baking muffins, and making French toast batter from scratch.

Their fresh, award-winning Breakfast, Brunch, and Lunch dishes are made using only the best ingredients without the use of heat lamps or deep fryers.

The best part is their creative menu features traditional favorites like omelets, pancakes, salads, and sandwiches, as well as signature items like the Chickichanga and classic BLTE sandwich.

Their “2 for You” lunch offers half portions of their most popular soups, salads, and sandwiches and you can get in and out fast.

Their menu’s “Healthier Side” features a variety of delicious Breakfast, Brunch, and Lunch options for the more health-conscious, including egg white omelets, fresh fruit crepes, and their signature Power Wrap.

The climax of their meals is the hotdogs. They are delicious, and everyone who has visited the place desires to visit again for a hotdog.

2. North Park Boathouse

This is a very relaxing hotdog joint that everyone looks forward to visiting just to have a taste of their delicious hotdog!

It is even more exciting to Granted I imagine it is a different story in the winter, but being able to sit right outside next to the water is a wonderful experience.

They have hammer hog and steak salad and various appetizers, crunchy, savory, and a tinge of sour for a perfect snack.

3. Page’s Dairy Mart

For hotdog lovers, this is the place to visit. People are treated to much more than just hotdogs. Therefore, if one is craving some delicious hotdogs or homemade ice cream,  maybe some shaved ice, Nachos, or a hamburger, look no further, Page Dairy Mart has it all covered!

Homemade blueberry ice cream is delicious! With pieces of blueberries in it. Not too sweet but completely enjoyable! Coconut shaved ice is just what you need on a hot sticky day!

The place is a small restaurant for take-out only. People wrap around the building on most days. If you taste this ice cream you will understand why. It has so many fun foods too! Hot dogs, nachos, hamburgers, and steak sandwiches. All at a great reasonable price too!

This is a great little gem and has been in business since 1951! You come here once, you will be back again, and again, and again…

4. Yovi’s

This is a little joint in the basement of a building just off Market Square. Many locals love visiting it for a quick lunchtime Chicago-style dog.

The seating is limited, but the service is fast and the dogs are great, and the prices are reasonable. A place worth a visit just for a delicious hotdog.

5. Nana’s New York Hotdog Shop

There’s a sign hanging in the back of Nana’s proclaiming that you’re not in a fast-food restaurant.

But waiting for your order is perhaps the best part of this tiny mom & pop joint on the North Side.

There aren’t just pork and beef dogs on the menu, but burgers and an assortment of breakfast options, and while the multiple cooks behind the counter are filling the orders, expect to overhear neighborhood gossip and upbeat camaraderie.

The hot dogs, while basic, are very tasty and slit down the middle, perfect for holding a large number of toppings available.

Just get there early; the shop is only open on weekdays, from 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m.

6. Wiener World

Besides the old diner ambiance and the impeccable speed of service, Wiener World serves the best dogs in Pittsburgh. Their classic all-beef hot dogs are juicy and even slightly sweet and can be loaded with a number of toppings they have on hand.

However, you can also do it up a bit and order their dog of the day, which, has different content every day. For example, they offer a beef hot dog on a pretzel bun with melted cheddar, bacon, and sauteed onions.

Wiener World is a favorite among the working Downtown crowd and, despite its name, also offers a wide selection of sandwiches, salads, and ice cream.

7. Frankie Bunz

There’s no better place to test out toppings than Frankie Bunz. Their list includes sriracha mayo, avocado, and candied bacon.

People make their own, including substituting in a veggie dog, but their specialty items are where they truly get inventive.

For example, their Pittsdogger hot dog is topped appropriately enough with fries and coleslaw, and they even serve up a Thai dog with spicy peanut sauce and cabbage slaw.

They also serve Chicago dogs which came with the appropriate overload of toppings. The salty snap of the hot dog complimented the sweet and sour zing of relish, pickles, mustard, and celery salt.

8. El Burro

It is unbelievable that a Mexican restaurant can serve hot dogs, but El Burro surprises everyone with its Tijuana Street Dog.

The hot dog is wrapped in bacon and topped with queso, pico de gallo, jalapeño, and avocado salsa.

The avocado salsa and jalapeño both provide the perfect and unexpected amount of spiciness and sweetness, while the pico de gallo and queso put the cherry on top when it comes to its presentation.

9. Frankie’s Extra Long

One of the old Pittsburg hotdog outlets with hot sausages, meatballs, and footlong hotdogs.

This is an amazing place to visit for a tasty extra-long hotdog. They serve them in chili and the cheese on my dog is just out of the world! It is the best option for anyone looking for the flavor of a chili cheese dog without risking shirt stains.

10. D’s Six Pax & Dogs

The staff is friendly and the place felt like a comfortable old shoe that makes feel as if you’re at home.

They carry an excellent selection of beers and of course, the dogs are the main show. Shout out to the bratwurst done Big Ben-style as an ultimate Pittsburgh treat.

Large fries were shared for the table and some sriracha coleslaw was a great side.
