What are Amandla Stenberg’s Pronouns and what does it Say about Her Sexuality?

Amandla Stenberg is possibly the youngest human who understands and handles issues beyond her age. But that explains how she managed to win so many awards just as a teenager. In 2015 and 2016, she was recognized as the most influential teenager while receiving several accolades. At seventeen years, Amandla knew about the existence of another gender apart from the traditional male and female. She thought, despite being recognized as a woman from the past, she didn’t feel like a woman and hence should be referred to as she/they.

When she was interviewed by the Magazine, as an eighteen years old person, Amandla opened up her thoughts about her gender identity. “Gender can be pretty much whatever you want it to be. I tend to believe that gender, as we’ve set it up in current-day society, doesn’t actually exist,” she said in the interview. She went on to explain that she is comfortable with using the pronouns ‘they’ and ‘them’ alongside ‘she’ and ‘her’ because that is what people are accustomed to.

Previously, Amandla had been a strong advocate and outspoken about her sexual identity. She has had to overcome trouble while identifying as a member of the LGBTQ community. However, the fact that she does not identify with either of the traditional genders, she had to adapt to being pansexual. “I would also use the word pansexual to describe my sexuality. The thing is I use the word bisexual just because I feel like for the people who don’t necessarily know the vocabulary…it’s easier to say I’m bi,” she explained.

The actress has used both social media and interviews to tell her stories to the world. She has used her stories to inspire others to also feel comfortable about their sexual orientation. When she was interviewed by the People, the actress expressed her gratitude and sense of accomplishment. “It’s been such a blessing to watch people who care about what I have to say feel more comfortable in their identities because they see I’m out here doing my thing,” she told the People.

Amandla also uses Tumblr to tell people her stories including her sexuality. She has been free to respond to questions asked on the platform. When asked about the pronouns she uses, once again, the actress insisted that she feels comfortable using ‘they’ and ‘them’ as well as ‘she’ and ‘her’ for those who don’t understand any binary.

The young actress has been vocal and tough when handling matters to do with her sexual orientation. An anonymous fan on Tumbler told her to stop pretending and focus on the actual problems. Amandla sharply responded, shutting the fan down. “I’m allowed to explore myself and how I see myself in the world, however, the fuck I want,” she replied. According to her, she is handling the actual problem in the society. She believes that things are changing every day as the world evolves. She says that soon people will understand the concept of no binary and embrace the fact that one can actually be neither male nor female.
