2. The park is one of the world’s first international peace parks.

Waterton Lakes Park and Glacier National Park was acclaimed as the first International Peace Park in 1932. This was after agreement by the park’s management that upper Waterton Valley should not be split up between the United States of America and Canada. Therefore, by leaving it joined together, it would be a symbol of peace and goodwill between the two countries. The park features the Triple Divide Peak, which supplies water to three different oceans, the Arctic ocean, the Pacific ocean, and the Atlantic ocean. The water that flows into the Pacific, Arctic, and Atlanta oceans is directed to the large water bodies by the Northern Divide and the Continental Divide, which converges at the peak of the summit

Going-to-the-Sun Road connects the east and west facets through the park’s center, crossing the Continental Divide at Logan Pass. Covering 50 miles of awe-inspiring landscapes, glaciers, and cascading waterfalls, this drive is an integral part of your visit.

The road also appeared in the opening credits of the horror movie, The Shining, which made it famous and attracted many visitors. It has also won several distinctive awards, including being registered to be a Historical Civil Engineering Landmark, a National Historic Landmark, and a National Historic Place.

6. There are 26 named glaciers

Additionally, the park has 26 glaciers from a total of 150 glaciers in 1850. The glaciers found in the park are relatively small. Climate change has made the park’s glaciers to retreat, and research by the US Geological Survey shows that they could disappear by the end of the century. The glaciers are also used as a source of water for irrigation in agriculture and cold streams for the numerous animal species found in the park.

7. Tourists can use red buses to explore the park.

The red buses were introduced in the 1930s as a way of reducing the car traffic that was in the park at that time. This ensured that the tourists could explore the park, which had been termed the continent’s crown, without disturbing the ecosystem due to congestion.

The park has been plagued with wildfire over the past decades. In 1936 a total of 64 fires were recorded. Also, in 2013, there was a major fire that broke out and resulted in 13% of the park being burnt. Therefore, Canada and the United States of America had to collaborate to come up with measures that can be taken to minimize the damage caused by the wildfires and what could be done to avoid them.

4. Boats are used for sightseeing

The park has wooden boats which have been used for sightseeing since the 1920s. One of the oldest boats still operational to date is Sinopah which transports visitors through Two Medicine Lake. Another boat is Little Chief which is located at Saint Mary Lake.
