Runyon Canyon Park is a 160-acre public park in Los Angeles, California. It is at the eastern end of the Santa Monica Mountains.
The park is maintained by the Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks. There are several entrances to this park.
Its southern entrance is located at the north end of Fuller Avenue in Hollywood. While the northern entrance is off the 7300 block of Mulholland Drive.

This park has several smaller hiking trails and they allow pets too. There are off-leash zones at the park. Its highest point in the park at an elevation of 1,320 ft is known as Indian Rock.
Runyon Park is located close to Hollywood and Hollywood hills, therefore, it is frequented by celebrities and other famous people.
A little backstory to this park. The land was privately owned and the place was a seasonal campsite for local Tongva Indians. They used to hunt in the area.
Later on, the land was bought by Vasquez and Greek George. After they passed on the land was sold to different people.
Eventually, the land was sold to the city ad they turned it into a public recreation park.

1. The Runyon Park is popular with dog owners

The Runyon Park sits on a 160-acre land and is open to people with pets. It is for this reason that the park is popular with the locals.
Dogs are allowed on the hiking trails and there are sections designated for the dogs off-leash.
2. The Runyon Canyon Park used to be private land
Runyon Canyon Park was bought in 1984 from its last private owner, John McCormack, by Adad Development.
McCormack lived on the property with his wife and they would occasionally entertain their Hollywood guests.
The sole purpose was to use the land as a public park by the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy and the City of Los Angeles.
It was known as “No Man’s Canyon” because of its state. This name was this gorge and it is believed to have been the camping site for the local Gabrielino tribe.
The previous owner of the property was Tiburcio Vasquez. He was a thug who used it as a hideout. Vasquez was captured while hiding out at his home in 1874.
3. The Runyon Canyon Park was sold several times

Alfredo Solano was a prominent civil engineer, civic leader, and symphony patron. He was also one of the founders of the Los Angeles Athletic Club.
After the death of Vasquez, he bought the Runyon canyon to invest in it. A few years later in 1919, his wife, Ella Brooks sold a big section of the land to Carman Runyon.
Carman was recently retired and had a successful coal business. He bought the land for his new bride and wanted to enjoy the warm Californian climate.
Unfortunately, their marriage did not last long and Runyon moved to Hollywood where he met and married Ellen Hunt.
His new wife was an excellent rider and the Runyons’ bought the canyon to use for riding and hunting. They also built a small bungalow near the Fuller Avenue entrance.
He lent his name to the canyon, the road and Carman Crest Drive before selling the estate in 1930.
the new owner was John McCormack, the world-famed Irish tenor. McCormack fell in love with the estate whilst filming Song O’ My Heart there in 1929.
McCormack and his wife lived in the mansion until they returned to England in 1938.
4. Property on Runyon Canyon Park was demolished

After the McCormack’s left for England, their property was left with no one to look after it. Today, you will see the ruins of the terraced gardens and buildings below the beautiful gates.
Their departure ushered a new owner, Hunt. He bought the land hoping to sell it at a higher price. Unfortunately, his first potential client was the city council. Their offer was way below the buying price.
Disappointed, Hunt sold the property at a low price to Jules Berman, who then destroyed the mansion and let the place run down.
Jules Berman used to import Mexican coffee-flavoured liqueur Kahlua and made a fortune from it.
After purchasing the estate, he demolished the dilapidated structures to avoid paying taxes. He planned to build a beautiful subdivision of 157 luxury homes on the estate.
The project was cancelled after he received opposition from Daniel deJonghe, a park activist and other residents.
5. There are five entryways into the Runyon Canyon

There are two gates at the bottom of the park in the south at Fuller and Vista Streets; a gate at the top of Runyon Canyon Road at Mulholland Drive on the north side of the park.
Another entry is at the northwest end of the park at Solar Drive by the trail on West Ridge, and a spine-ridge trail from the top of Wattles Garden.
The trailhead on Mulholland Drive has a parking area while the other trailheads rely on on-street parking.
Of these entryways are hiking trails. This park has three routes to hike from the Fuller Gate.
The trails are in order of difficulty. For instance, the Runyon Canyon Road is easy hence good for beginners and children, the Star Trail is medium and perfect for intermediates while the Hero Trail is difficult and need experienced hikers.
Several of the trails in Runyon Park are paved.
6. There are more difficult trails on Runyon Canyon Park
If you love to challenge yourself outdoors, then Runyon Canyon Park is the perfect place for this.
One of the difficult routes is the Hero’s Trail. It starts just inside the second gate on Runyon Canyon Road.
The slopes on this trail are up on 18degrees and have several bends and ridges. Once one surpasses this, you will e welcomed by magnificent views to the West and South.
It is one of the most difficult climbs compared to the other trail like Star Trail. It takes between 45 minutes to an hour to complete the hike.
If you would like to get to the highest point, the Indian Rock, you will hike for another 20 minutes.
Another difficult trail, which is less known, is at the bottom of the Canyon. It starts by the sharp bend in the lower fire road before the tennis court.
This trail runs through the ruins and over the foundation slab, a dry river bed and finally emerges at the back of the canyon on Runyon Canyon Road.
7. The Runyon Canyon is home to different wildlife
The upper canyon trail is home to a diversity of wildlife such as birds, owls and hawks, snakes, lizards, deer and coyotes.
There are also several hundred plant species all over Runyon Canyon including black sage, elderberry, California sagebrush, wild buckwheat, golden yarrow, laurel sumac, scrub oak, sugar bush and toyon.
Some of the animals that you can easily spot are Coyotes. You can see them early morning and dusk.
Another popular landmark here is the Rock Mandala. It is a piece of public artwork built-in 2008 by resident and director Robert Wilson.
The sculpture is a mandala of rocks that weigh about 300lbs. the place around it is used for meditation and exercise.
8. Dog owners contribute to the upkeep of the Runyon Canyon Park

Since the park allows pets, the association organized a series of meetings.
They recommended the closure of the Vista Street Gate. This way dog owners would pay an entry fee to help pay for park upkeep and improvements.
However, there has been a lot of controversy regarding this new policy. The board was dissolved and the recommendations were not implemented.
Plans to also have a parking lot at the park were also halted citing alternative options.
9. Celebrities love hiking at Runyon Canyon Park
It wouldn’t be Los Angeles if you couldn’t at least hope to spot a celebrity, right? Well, if you love to see them in real life, then Runyon Park is the place to be.
Several celebrities go to the Runyon Canyon to work out, get some fresh air or walk their dogs.
It is said that the northern entrance is the best place to spot them.
