1. Theodore Nugent Has been sober throughout his musical career
Ted has and continues to be sober from drugs and alcohol which is contrary to the rock and roll lifestyle of many Rockstar.
He claimed proudly that women were his only addiction and has spoken openly about the cons of alcohol and drugs stating “drugs and alcohol equals death” after the death of his ex-wife who died while driving under the influence.
2. Ted started his music career at a very young age
At 9 years of age, Ted received his first musical instrument ( an acoustic guitar) from his aunt, an airline stewardess that had been left on a flight unclaimed. He went on to take formal lessons for a few years and by the time he was thirteen years old he joined his first band, the Lourds.
Soon after the band’s formation, they won a local battle of the band’s contest, beating out 60 other groups earning them a chance to open for the Supremes and the Beau Brummels at nearby Cobo Hall. They recorded a handful of tracks and covers before splitting in 1965.
3. Nugent is said to have deliberately failed his Vietnam draft
By his admission, Nugent faked symptoms and used drugs to keep from being drafted. He claimed that he was only ingesting Vienna sausages and Pepsi going to the bathroom in his pants for days before his physical so that he wouldn’t get drafted to Vietnam.
He would later deny this in a 2006 interview with the UK Independent newspaper and a 2018 appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience claiming that he invented the story for his and his band’s amusement.
He asserted that news sources at the time often published inaccurate information about him and his band. Further claimed that he was eligible for military service and passed a draft physical in 1969 while he was attending Oakland Community College.
4. Ted didn’t support the Obama administration’s rules on gun control

Nugent claimed that rejecting the idea of the right to self-defense being expressed in the Second Amendment to the US Constitution, which he called “gun control” policies, is most likely to destroy American society.
This was on July 9, 2010, while being interviewed by Jones and had his critics about the latest policies issued by the Obama administration and the US Supreme Court concerning gun policy.
He further called the Obama White House the Mao Zedong Fan Club. “…we’re about to give up the greatest quality of life to become a suburb of Indonesia…”. Going as far as calling President Barack Obama “a clueless, rookie president” and Supreme Court justices who disagree with his stance on gun ownership “losers” and “weasels”, in a scathing op-ed in The Washington Times.
He went further to author the books Ted, White & Blue: The Nugent Manifesto and God, Guns and Rock ‘N’ Roll.
5. Theodore Nugent hosted a hunting show
Two game wardens saw a particular episode, later charging Nugent with 11 misdemeanor violations of California hunting law.
This is consequential to one of his episodes on his show, named after his popular song “Spirit of the Wild” whereby he taught and advised hunters and “hands-on” conservationists around the world on the different aspects of hunting and politics.
In this particular episode, he hit a young deer with a bow. He learned how to hunt with a bow when he was 5, three years before he started playing the guitar.
6. He was said to have performed in honor of the late prime minister Martin Luther King
After the news of Martin Luther King’s assassination came out in 1968, Jimi Hendrix, B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Joni Mitchell, Al Kooper, and Ted Nugent met up for an all-night blues, folk, and rock session at The New Generation Club, New York in honor of the late minister.
Nugent later told UCR that he didn’t take part in the gathering at the Generation Club and that people must have been confusing it with another event.
7. Ted Nugent has made several media appearances
He has had several appearances onscreen with his most memorable one being on “The Simpsons” twice in seasons 23 and 19. Where Homer Simpson supported him for the Republican presidential nomination during an appearance in January.
He has also appeared on;
- The Alex Jones Show (July 30, 2008) – He was interviewed about his book “Ted White and Blue: The Nugent Manifesto”
- Glenn Beck’s coverage of the Tax Day Tea Party pretests – He appeared on stage with his guitar in San Antonio as he hosted the show with Beck and played music for the protestors at the Alamo.
- Guitar Hero World Tour – as part of the “solo guitar career” section, the player engages in a guitar duel with Nugent, after which the song “Stranglehold” is unlocked and Nugent becomes available as a playable character.
- He was a weekly contributor to the Waco Tribune-Herald until 2009
- Appeared on The Joe Rogan’s experience in 2018 – he further claimed that he told the excrement story to the High Times just to have fun with its “dirtbag” and “hippie” writers in 1977 since he was “hardcore anti-drug”.
8. Theodore Nugent became bankrupt at the height of his career
Ted Nugent sold-out shows across America garnering millions in the ’70s. However, due to the lifestyle and lack of good advice he left his funds in the hands of his incompetent posse.
His managers made some bad financial decisions, putting his assets into failing businesses including the famous mink farm. These failing ventures led him to lose most of his fortune forcing him to declare bankruptcy in 1980.
9. Ted dated 17-year-old Hawaii native Pele Massa when he was 30
Ted Nugent was thirty when he met seventeen-year-old Pele Massa in 1978. They became lovers almost instantaneously which was allowed in Hawaii because according to the laws of Hawaii, the age of sexual consent is sixteen.
He, however, couldn’t legally marry her because of the age gap between them. So with the permission of Pele’s parents, he adopted her becoming his legal guardian. The couple stayed together for 7 years and parted ways in 1986.
10. Ted Nugent is a relentless live performer
