1. Richie was raised in a musical family and received a quality education
The US city of Tuskegee, Alabama, is where Lionel Richie was born on June 20, 1949. His full name is Lionel Brockman Richie, Jr. His father was a systems analyst for the U.S. Army, and his mother was a teacher who later served as the head of the school.
Richie basically lived his entire life at his maternal grandparent’s house on the Tuskegee Institute campus (now Tuskegee University). He first learned about the fundamentals of music and famous classical composers from his grandmother, a classical pianist. His uncle, a large band jazz player, and arranger gave him his first saxophone as a gift.
2. He was on the verge of becoming a Priest
Richie considered enrolling in divinity school to serve as a priest in the Episcopal Church, where he had been baptized, but ultimately decided he was not “priest material” and should instead pursue his musical career despite his lack of musical training.
Richie initially gravitated toward gospel music because he wanted to become a preacher, but he soon picked up musical inspirations from several African American popular genres as well as from country music, which was prominent in the American South.

Richie has four Grammy Awards under his belt. Together with Michael Jackson, he co-wrote the 1985 Song of the Year winner “We Are the World.” Additionally, he received awards for Producer of the Year, Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for 1982’s Truly, and Album of the Year (Non-Classical).
Richie became the first recipient of the RIAA diamond album award.
Richie has received two nominations and one Golden Globe nomination. For the 1982 film Endless Love, he was nominated for Best Original Song. The group was founded in college as a way for the participants to socialize and meet ladies. Lionel raised $3.1 million for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. He claimed that his grandmother, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in the 1980s but lived to reach 103 years old, served as the inspiration for his decision to become an activist when he spoke at the foundation’s annual spring gala in 2003.

Richie, who is mostly a singer-songwriter, has dabbled in acting. He made his acting debut in 1996’s The Preacher’s Wife alongside Denzel Washington and Whitney Houston, two other singers who later became actors. He hasn’t yet appeared in any other roles except for a quick cameo on The Simpsons as himself.
Richie claimed that working alongside the Oscar-winning great Washington was rather intimidating and made him feel like a deer in headlights.
