Health care in the United States of America has evolved from colonial days to the present. In most of the American colonies, medicine was fundamental for the first few generations, as few upper-class British physicians emigrated to the colonies. The first medical society was organized in Boston in 1735. In the 18th century, 117 Americans from wealthy families had graduated in medicine in Edinburgh, Scotland, but most physicians learned as apprentices in the colonies.

After the American Revolution, the United States was slow to adopt advances in European medicine but adopted germ theory and science-based practices in the late 1800s as the medical education system changed. Johns Hopkins originated several modern organizational practices, including residency and rounds.

1. Dr. Helene D. Gayle – HIV/AIDS researcher

Gayle is a doctor, researcher, executive, and global caregiver. She has become one of the leading experts on HIV/AIDS. Gayle had a special interest in the effects of AIDS on children, adolescents, and families, and closely studied the global consequences of HIV/AIDS.

Helene serves as CEO of The Chicago Community Trust, one of the nation’s leading community foundations. The Trust has mobilized people, ideas, organizations, and resources to advance equity, opportunity, and prosperity for all.

Gayle鈥檚 contributions to the study, control, and prevention of HIV/AIDS, along with other infectious diseases such as tuberculosis, have been significant. This earned her recognition as one of Forbes 100 Most Powerful Women.

2. Dr. Myles. B. Abbott – Pediatrician

Myles is one of the best-known Pediatricians and is located in Berkeley, CA. He treats the problems of growth and child development and has been in practice for over 20 years. 

His pediatric training, including the Chief Residency in Pediatrics at the University of California at San Francisco and San Francisco General Hospital, was completed in 1976. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Pediatrics and a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

3. Dr. James Andrews – orthopaedic surgeon

Andrews is a celebrated orthopaedic surgeon. He is a surgeon for knee, elbow, and shoulder injuries and is a specialist in repairing damaged ligaments. 

James specializes in working with sports stars and many high-profile athletes. He has become one of the best-known and most popular orthopaedic surgeons. He is the team doctor for the Alabama Crimson Tide, Tampa Bay Rays, Auburn University Tigers, and Washington Football, Team. 

He is also the co-founder of the American Sports Medicine Institute. This is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to research, education, and injury prevention in orthopaedic and sports medicine.

4. Dr. Bobbi Peterson – dentist

Bobbi is a second-generation HBCU-educated dentist. She is one of only three black female orthodontists practising in Brooklyn and the only black female orthodontist in New York. 

Bobbi is also the first African American to invent a battery-operated toothbrush. The toothbrush was named the Big Mouth Brush, it could potentially cut the time it takes to brush one’s teeth in half.

On the first Tuesday of each month, Bobbi鈥檚 practice offers free orthodontic evaluations. She also volunteers in community schools to teach the students and the staff alike about the importance of oral hygiene. She even provides free screenings for middle school students.

7. Dr. Mark. F. Aaron – cardiologist

Mark is a heart failure cardiologist. His specialization is Cardiovascular Disease. Cardiology is a branch of medicine that deals with disorders of the heart as well as some parts of the cardiovascular system. 

Mark is a famous doctor known for curing various heart diseases. Aaron has more experience with Adult Congenital Heart Conditions and Heart Conditions than other specialists in his area. He is affiliated with medical facilities Ascension Saint Thomas River Park and Saint Thomas West Hospital. 

8. Dr. Corrie T.M Anderson – anesthesiologist

Anderson is a board-certified anesthesiologist and director of Pediatric Pain Medicine at Seattle Children’s Hospital. He is also a UW professor of Anesthesiology and adjunct professor of Pediatrics. He received his A.B. with Honors in Biochemistry from Harvard University and a Doctor of Medicine (M.D) from Stanford University School of Medicine in 1982. 

Anderson became the director of the program for Pediatric Pain Medicine in the Department of Anesthesiology at Seattle Children鈥檚 Hospital. At Seattle Children鈥檚 Dr Anderson developed a Pediatric Outpatient Pain Clinic and a Complementary Medicine Clinic which helps make the hospital’s expert care available to everyone.

Corrie is at the forefront of advancing the accessibility of pain medicine for our littlest ones, receiving research funding, publishing scholarly works, speaking internationally, and serving as an advisor and board member. He started a national conference on pediatric pain management and an international ultrasound-guided pediatric regional anesthesiology conference. Oncology gynaecology concentrates on the diagnosis and treatment of cancers of the female reproductive system.

Abbas received his medical degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine in 1986. He serves as the Division Director of Gynecologic Oncology at Sinai Hospital, Baltimore, Maryland.
