Darius Carlos Rucker is an American singer, guitarist and songwriter who gained fame as the lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist of a rock band. His rock band, Hootie & the Blowfish was created by Darius in 1986 at the University of South Carolina along with Mark Bryan, Jim Sonefeld and Dean Felber. Hootie & the Blowfish released five studio albums alongside Darius and charted six top 40 hits on the Billboard Hot 100. Darius co-wrote several songs of Hootie & the Blowfish with the other member of the band.

He was born on 13th May 1966 and raised in Charleston, South Carolina in the United States. Darius was brought up by his single mother, Carolyn (who was a nurse at the Medical University of South Carolina) alongside his three sisters and two brothers. His father was never around but he got to see him only before church on Sundays as he used to be in a gospel band known as The Traveling Echoes.

Darius had a typical Southern African-American upbringing. His family was economically poor and used to attend church every Sunday. Due to their financial struggles, there was a time his mother, two sisters, his grandmother and 14 children lived in a three-bedroom house.

1. Darius was Raised by His Single Mother

Born and raised in Charleston, South Carolina in the United States, Darius Rucker grew up with his three sisters and two brothers. His mother, Carolyn was their breadwinner who also served the purpose as their father.

She was a nurse at the Medical University of South Carolina. His father was never available for them but he used to see him on Sundays as he was a member of a gospel band, The Traveling Echoes.

Darius Rucker was not that lucky to be born into a financially stable family. He once stated that he had a typical Southern African-American upbringing alongside his siblings.

Every Sunday, his family had to attend church services. They were also economically poor which was very clear in how they lived. There was a time when his mother, two sisters, his grandmother and 14 children lived in a three-bedroom house.

This did not hold back his hard work and he has always stated that he looks back on his childhood with very fond memories. L’Corine, his sister recalls that singing was his dream.

3. Darius Formed Hootie & The Blowfish Band

While attending the University of South Carolina, Darius Rucker met Mark Bryan, Jim Sonefeld and Dean Felber. Mark Bryan first heard Darius sing in the shower and the two became a duo that played R.E.M covers at local venues.

Mark and Darius later recruited Felber and finally, Sonefeld joined them in 1989. Darius has always been the lead singer of their band Hootie & the Blowfish since they formed it in 1986.

4. He Gained More Recognition as the Band’s Frontman Leading to More Opportunities

After the band was formed, they released several albums and performed on various stages. Darius Rucker was the lead man who gained more recognition as the frontman which brought about several opportunities.

In October 1995, the first opportunity came as he was asked to sing the national anthem at the World Series. Later, Frank Sinatra invited Darius to sing at his 80th birthday where he sang the song “The Lady Is a Tramp.” He also made a voice cameo in an episode of the sitcom Friends the same week after Frank’s birthday.

Darius Rucker joined Nanci Griffith on “Gulf Coast Highway”, a song for her 1997 album. He also encouraged Atlantic Records to agree on a deal with Edwin McCain and made a guest appearance on his (McCain’s) debut album.

5. Darius Made His Solo R&B Debut but Professed His Love for Country Music

In 2001, Darius Rucker made some changes in his style of singing as he made his solo R&B debut. He debuted with the album, The Return of Mongo Slade for Atlantic Records. But due to contractual changes, the album was not released by the Atlantic Records label. This album was later released by Hidden Beach Recordings as Back to Then in 2002.

Darius came out and professed his love and admiration for country music as he did not anticipate recording an R&B-styled disc again. He stated, “Country Music is my day job now. I’ll probably do this till it’s all over, but that album was a lot of fun.”

6. Darius is the First Black American to Win the New Artist Award

During his career, Darius Rucker has won several awards and has more nominations for other awards. His solo albums and band albums gave him more popularity worldwide.

In 2009, Darius Rucker made history during the Country Music Association awards. He became the first black American to win the New Artist Award from the Country Music Association after making his debut in country music. He also became the second black person to win any award from this association.

7. His First Country Hit Solo Made Him First African-American to Chart a Number One

In 2008, Darius Rucker made his debut in country music as he signed with Capitol Records Nashville. ‘Don’t Think I Don’t Think About It, Rucker’s first solo single debuted at number 51 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts.

He later made his Grand Ole Opry debut in July 2008 with his single gaining more popularity. His single reached number one in September. This made Darius the first solo African-American artist to chart a number-one country hit since Charley Pride in 1983.

Before getting married, Darius and his girlfriend Elizabeth Ann Phillips had a child on 21st April 1995. Carolyn Pearl Phillips was the first child of Darius Rucker. However, Darius did not marry Elizabeth as he tied the knot with Beth Leonard in 2000.

On 16th May 2001, Daniella Rose, his second daughter was born by his wife Beth Leonard. On 27th October 2004, his son Jack was born. However, after twenty years of marriage, Darius Rucker and his wife announced their conscious uncoupling.

9. Rucker is Passionate and Has an Interest in Golf

Other than being a singer and guitarist, Darius Rucker also has an interest in sporting activities. He is passionate about golf. Darius Rucker was a VIP guest of Team USA at the 2016 Ryder Cup.

He had attended Arnold Palmer’s funeral before the Cup. There is a women’s college golf tournament that is named after him, the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate.

10. He is a Friend Of Tiger Woods

Darius Rucker is a friend of renowned golfer Tiger Woods. The duo met in a bar in 1993 when Tiger Woods was eighteen years old. To showcase their friendship, Darius sang at his (Tiger Woods’) weeding with Hootie & the Blowfish as well as at his father’s funeral.
