Chaka Khan is an American singer known as the Queen of Funk with a music career spanning over five decades. She began singing in the 1970s as the lead vocalist of the funk band Rufus, then proceeded to have a successful solo career.

In 2016, Billboard magazine ranked her as the 65th most successful dance club artist of all time and was ranked at No. 17 in VH1’s original list of the 100 Greatest Women of Rock & Roll.

1. Chaka Khan’s Actual Name is Yvette Marie Stevens

Chaka Khan was born on March 23, 1953, as Yvette Marie Stevens to Charles Stevens and Sandra Coleman into an artistic bohemian household in Chicago, Illinois. She was raised in an island area named Hyde Park of Chicago’s rough Southside housing projects.

She has four siblings, and one of her sisters became a successful musician in her own right under the name Taka Boom. Her brother formed the funk group Jamaica Boys and was a member of Aurra.

2. Chaka Khan Was Interested in Music at An Early Age

Her interest in music developed at an early age when her grandmother introduced her to jazz, and she became a fan of rhythm and blues music as a preteen. At eleven, she formed a girl group, the Crystalettes, which included her sister Taka.

As a student, Khan started performing in small groups around the Chicago area, first with Cash McCall’s group Lyfe, including her then-boyfriend, Hassan Khan. While performing in the local bands, she was spotted by a new music group Rufus joining them in 1972.

3. She Gained Popularity for The Song I Feel for You

Khan released her sixth album, I Feel for You, in 1984. The title track was initially written and recorded by American singer Prince in 1979 and also recorded by The Pointer Sisters and Rebbie Jackson. Still, Khan’s version became the most successful and popular.

The song became a million-selling in the United States and the United Kingdom, helping her relaunch her career. The song reached No.3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in December 1984 and hit No.1 on the Cash Box chart. Khan got nominated for two Grammys because of the song, but she won only one.

During her solo career, she achieved one platinum album, three gold singles, and three gold albums; with the Rufus, she achieved four gold albums, four gold singles, and two platinum albums.

Subsequently, she can sing in seven music genres, including rock, country, classical, pop, jazz, gospel, and R&B. she has collaborated with many artists in diverse genres, such as Mary J. Blige, Larry Graham, Quincy Jones, Ray Charles, and Robert Palmer.

6. Throughout Her Career, She Has Amassed Many Awards

Khan has won ten Grammy Awards, including two as a member of Rufus, having received 22 Grammy Awards nominations, including three as a member of Rufus. These Grammy Awards include Best R&B Vocal Performance, Female for Chaka Khan, Best Vocal Arrangement For Two or More Voices for  Be Bop Medley, and more.

Apart from the Grammy awards, she has won Soul Train Awards, United Negro College Fund Award, UK Music Video Award, Billboard Japan Music Awards, and American Music Awards nominations for her different music works.

7. Chaka Khan Has Been Married Twice

Khan was first married at 17 to Hassan Khan in 1970, and they divorced after a short time later. In 1976 khan married again to Richard Holland but it also led to a divorce because Holland wanted Khan to tone her sexy stage image, but she refused. 

After her split with Holland, Khan spent time in the studio with Ike Turner, who was a real inspiration and emotional catalyst during her difficult time. After her divorce was finalized, she moved to Europe, settling in London and later buying a residence in Germany. 

Khan is a mother of two, a daughter Indira Milini and a son Damien Holland. Her daughter was a result of a relationship between Khan and Rahsaan Morris.

8. She Has Struggled with Drug Abuse

  In the past, Khan struggled with alcoholism and drug abuse, and her drug use, including cocaine and heroin, ended in the early 1990s. Her alcoholism was on and off until 2005, when she declared herself sober. 

She adopted a vegan diet intending to lose weight and combat high blood pressure and Type-2 diabetes.

9. Chaka Khan Has Been Involved in Philanthropic Activities

In the 1960s, Khan attended several civil rights rallies with her father’s second wife, Connie, who supported the movement. Khan joined the Black Panther Party after befriending a fellow member, activist, and Chicago native.

In 1999, Khan started Chaka Khan Foundation to help autistic children and children from low-income families.

10. Chaka Khan’s Son Was Accused of Murder

Khan’s son Damien Holland was accused of murder in 2006 after 17-year-old Christopher Bailey was shot dead. Khan testified on her son’s behalf, and Holland claimed the shooting was an accident. Holland was then acquitted in the criminal trial and found liable in the civil suit.
