José Alberto Rodríguez Chucuan is a mixed martial artist, sports commentator, professional wrestling promoter, and professional wrestler. Del Rio is popularly known for his time in the WWE as Alberto Del Rio. He is also known as Alberto El Patrón in Impact Wrestling.

Born in San Luis Potosí on 25th May 1977, this Mexican-American was from a popular Mexican wrestling family. His father luchador Dos Caras his uncles Mil Máscaras and Sicodelico as well as his cousins Hijo de Sicodelico and Sicodelico Jr were all wrestlers. Del Rio’s younger brother Guillermo was also a wrestler. He signed a contract with WWE under the ring name Memo Montenegro. The contract ran from August 2012 to July 2013.

As a mixed martial artist and luchador in Mexico and Japan, Del Rio used the name Dos Caras Junior. He won the Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL) World Heavyweight Championship once and became a success in the CMLL. Del Rio later joined the WWE becoming the first Mexico-born champion in WWE’s history.

Alberto Del Rio is not the name given to him at birth. Born on 25th May 25, 1977, his real name is Jose Alberto Rodriguez Chucuan.

He has used several stage names. Alberto Del Rio is his stage name. In the past, he also used Alberto El Patron as a stage name.

2. In one of the matches, he accidentally knocked out his opponent

One of the things about pro wrestling is that it is fake. During those matches, accidents sometimes occur. Del Rio has been involved in such an incident.

During an RFVideo.com shoot, Del Rio referred to one incident which took place while he was working with Daniel Bryan. Del Rio had made a lot of contact with Bryan and Bryan was not able to get up after the blows.

Del Rio also added that despite the incident, he had been told to go on with the match against Bryan. This was one of the disturbing aspects of the incident and the WWE.

3. He had contemplated leaving wrestling long before the altercation

It is said that Del Rio had contemplated leaving the company in the past. The racist remark from the employee was not the first time Del Rio had thought about leaving.

In an interview on the Lucha Libre show Tercera Caida, Del Rio stated that he had considered leaving the company in the past. This was long before he had made his debut as Del Rio.

Del Rio said that he did not like working for the developmental territory Florida Championship Wrestling. He had considered going back to Mexico but he realized the importance of FCW. According to Del Rio, wrestlers learned the WWE style from the company.

4. He was fired from the WWE due to unprofessional conduct

In August 2014, the WWE announced that they had released Del Rio due to unprofessional conduct. Del Rio had been involved in an altercation with one of the employees.

The company shared a tweet stating that Del Rio was responsible for his actions. The tweet also said that if anything, the people should be angry at Del Rio for his actions. No pro athlete should conduct themselves in an unprofessional manner, the tweet added.

Del Rio later stated on the WrestleTalkTv podcast that he had slapped the employee for making a racial joke. Del Rio’s contract was almost up which Aaron Olster of the Baltimore Sun stated may have been one of the reasons Del Rio was fired.

5. In 2020, he was accused of sexually assaulting his girlfriend

In 2020, Del Rio’s girlfriend accused him of sexual assault. She stated that Del Rio hit her causing injury and forced her to strip for him. He also forced a sock into her mouth.

Del Rio’s girlfriend also said that he smashed her computer and phone. Del Rio was also accused of threatening to take his girlfriend’s child. If she told anyone, she stated that Del Rio would leave her child alone on the road. Del Rio was arrested and charged with the crime.

6. In 2018, he became a United States citizen

Del Rio was born and raised in Mexico. For a long time, he knew he wanted to become a United States citizen and he worked on becoming one. In 2018, he became a naturalized US citizen.

7. For a year, he owned and ran a restaurant in Texas

In 2016, Del Rio opened his restaurant. Located in San Antonio Texas, the restaurant was known as La Cantinita. The restaurant, however, closed down in its first year.

8. Him and his ex-wife have three children together

For several years, Del Rio was married to Angela Velkei. In June 2016, Velkei decided to no longer be married to Del Rio.

Velkei stated that adultery was the reason the marriage ended. On the other hand, Del Rio said that the marriage had been over for more than a year and adultery was not the reason. Together, the couple has three children.

9. After his first marriage, he wanted to marry a wrestler but the relationship did not work

After his divorce, Del Rio met and dated another woman. The woman, Saraya-Jade Bevis, was also a wrestler.

Del Rio was ready to give marriage a second try and the couple got engaged in October 2016. The relationship ended less than a year after the engagement. The couple did not get the chance to walk down the aisle.

10. He was born into a Mexican wrestling family

Born in San Luis Potosi City in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, Del Rio is from a Mexican wrestling family. His father, uncle, and cousins were also well-known wrestlers.

Del Rio lived in Mexico and even attended college in the same town where he grew up. Del Rio attended the Universidad Autónoma de San Luis Potosí. He graduated with a degree in architecture.

He won the World Heavyweight Championship and the WWE Championship twice each. In 2011 he won the Royal Rumble and the Money in the Bank ladder match. He was the only professional to win both events in the same calendar year.
