The whiskey rebellion began due to tax reforms. In January 1791 President George Washington and then secretary of treasury Alexandra Hamilton proposed an excise tax. It targeted spirits distilled within the United States.
What the government did not see coming was the passionate rejection of this tax by the western Pennsylvania side. This single tax started the rebellion known as the Whiskey Rebellion in the year 1794.
The rebellion threatened the stability of the United States of America and forced then president Washington to lead the country’s militia westward to stop the rebellion. Below are the top ten interesting truths about the Whiskey Rebellion.
1. The huge debt amassed by the government led to the tax law formation

The government amassed a lot of debt after assuming the debt from the colonies during the revolution. In the year 1791, congress approved the bill putting an excise tax duty on all distilled spirits. This was approved by the secretary of treasury Alexandra Hamilton.
The bill required farmers to pay in cash at the end of the year. The problem came when farmers from the east side had access to markets and resources. So it was easier for them to remit their taxes than for their west side counterparts. This was the major cause of the rebellion.

In those years the western part of Pennsylvania was separated by Allegheny Mountains and the majority of the population were farmers. There was a limited market for the sale of grain grown locally and it was difficult to transport to the eastern part for sales.
This was because of the poor road networks. Converting grain into whiskey made it easier for transportation and there was a better market for the product. Hence the enactment of that bill was not well received by the farmers. They saw it as the government’s way to exploit them, especially the small-scale farmers.
3. Farmers were already at odds with the government

There was already tension between the farmers and the government. The farmers felt that this was interfering with their business. They thought of it as unjust and an infringement of their rights. A meeting was later held to begin the resistance to the collection of excise duty. Many westerners refused to pay the tax and people coming to collect the tax were often ambushed or humiliated.
4. President Washington condemned the rebellion in 1792
The violence continued to spread throughout the counties over the next few years. It caused interference with the operation of laws in the United States. This caused President Washington in 1792 to issue a proclamation condemning the brutality and seeking a peaceful stop to it.
This did not stop the violence despite the president’s peaceful approach. The rebels gathered in the last week of July 1794. The president then issued another proclamation calling the culprits to return to their homes. He as well invoked the military act of 1792. This permitted the president to use state forces to put off the rebellion.

The president had several peaceful approaches that showed no results. He opted to enforce the militia act 1792. The president used approximately 12950 military men from the surrounding states to put down the rebellion. There was no real battle recorded but about 150 individuals were captured. It happened in the year 1794, on August 7.

The importance of the whiskey rebellion in American history is because through this rebellion the American’s federal authority was first tested. This rebellion enforced the idea that the new government had the right to levy a particular tax that would impact the citizens in all states. It also brought the idea that the government had the right to pass and enforce laws impacting all the states.
7. Thomas Jefferson resisted the law to pass
Thomas was against the passing of the law of excise tax on distilled produce. The law passed anyway because the government required finances to meet its outstanding debt. When the news about the tax reached western Pennsylvania the individuals voiced their displeasure and decided not to pay the tax. They viewed it as a law that exploited them and favored the eastern elite.
8. Two men were charged with treason out of the rebellion arrestees
The total number of people convicted was only 50 people out of 150 arrested. They were later released to a lack of enough evidence against them. Only two people had sufficient evidence against them so they were convicted of treason.
The two men were Philip Wigle and John Mitchell. Wigle was convicted for beating a collector while Mitchell was convicted for robbing the United States mail. They both were sentenced to treason and death by hanging but were later pardoned by President Washington.

Washington’s administrative ability to restrict the whiskey rebellion was met with popular approval once the news spread. The event demonstrated that the new government had the readiness and ability to suppress violent resistance to its laws. This was a success by Washington’s administration in the eyes of some historians.

The whiskey rebellion contributed to the formation of political parties in America. The whiskey tax was replaced after Jefferson anti-federalist came to power in 1801 which opposed the Federalist Party.
